What’s new?

By , June 2, 2008 5:43 am

We were in Kansas City this weekend to go to a wedding and catch up with friends. We spent a lot of time answering the question “What’s new?” with “We’ve been bowling a lot!”

Later, Steven said to me, “We should probably come up with something different to tell people than ‘We’ve been bowling a lot.’ It’s kind of lame.”

That’s a good point. We haven’t seen a lot of these people in 8+ months and the only thing we have to tell them is that we’ve been going bowling?

For our credit, we talked about A LOT more than that. But what are you supposed to say when people ask you “what’s new?” I could talk about our new car (and sound vain), our cat (and sound crazy), about work (and bore people), or about… what?

I think next time, I am going to have a prepared answer. That doesn’t sound crazy.

It’s hard to catch up with people that you haven’t seen in a long time. But what I love about Steven’s friends is that even when we haven’t seen them in ages, I still have a great time around them, and feel like nothing has changed.

  2. My new answer is, I do yoga 6 days a week and sometimes ride my bike.

Wow, that sounds worse when I actually write it down. :o(

My standard answers (were are mostly true) when I get asked such questions are: “Not much” “Working a lot” “Busy with life” Unless I feel comfortable with one of the people I’ve not seen in a while, it’s generic answers.

It was so good to see you guys. Your entry fails to mention that all Adam and I talked about is our dog (crazy) and our new fence. We need to prepare new material as well. Next time you are in town we can all go bowling together! And I will let you dip me! Take care!

You could have said that you’d been bowling for months, practicing, toiling strenuously – but still can’t beat your brother-in-law who hasn’t bowled in months. You thought I was kidding when I said I didn’t need to practice to beat you and Steven. Bwahahahahahaha!

bobbi+ – Steven is good. I am getting better πŸ˜‰ At least we are having fun. It was Dan and Emily’s wedding πŸ™‚

Gina (Mannyed) – That sounds good to me! I hear yoga is very “in.” πŸ˜‰

martymankins – I would like to just give a generic answer. But then I feel like that kills the conversation right there. Or makes me sound boring. But “working a lot” would be true for me!

Amy Kincaid – HA HA HA!!! I liked hearing about your dog and fence πŸ™‚ It made me feel better about talking about my cat. Maybe we can be crazy “pet” people together? πŸ˜‰ It was fun to catch up with you guys. I hope we can come back to KC soon, because I will take you bowling… and will be practicing the dip. πŸ™‚

Andrew – Hmm. I don’t think that’s worth bringing up. πŸ˜‰ That would only make us sound MORE lame. And btw, I haven’t been bowling since I left the womb like you and Steven, so chances are, after I’ve been bowling a bit longer, I WILL kick your ass. πŸ˜›

I hate those broad questions. Unless you have something big you’ve just done or are about to do, nothing seems that worthy as an answer… but then I’ve been running into acquaintances who look at me with a somewhat critical eye more than old friends lately.

Bowling sounds like a good answer to me though. In fact, I could easily say I’ve been bowling a lot on the Wii in the past few weeks. At least you’re doing real bowling! πŸ˜‰

I never know what to answer when anyone asks me any on the spot kind of question. At least you can come up with possibilities! I think I really do need to work on some answers!

  9. Angela says:

You just gotta rack your brains for a funny anecdotal story to tell! Everyone loves those.

  10. kilax says:

claire – LOL!!! Wii bowling! Everyone keeps suggesting we do that to practice! I feel the same way too – that nothing seems big enough to mention. I don’t want to seem like I am reaching for something to say!

tori – I bet you would have a lot to say! You can tell about how your daughter went to her first dance… πŸ™‚ Hee hee hee πŸ™‚

Angela – I usually do have a few funny stories about myself… I should start off with those? πŸ˜‰

KS? Is one of you from Kansas? I’m sure you have plenty of things to talk about! You are both very intelligent!!! But I had to LOL at the cat thing… I’d talk about Cozmo 24/7 if someone would let me..heee-heeeee!
