Things that grow

By , April 29, 2008 5:54 am

Ooo… I can’t wait to see what it looks like fully grown!

Steven has a green thumb. I kill plants. Data does too (although we have different methods – I don’t chew on them).

I’ll just add “taking care of houseplants” to my list of domestic skills that I stink at. Also on the list:

  • cooking
  • sweeping
  • mopping (Thanks for the correction, Nilsa S.!)
  • making the bed (I do it, it just looks awful)
  • putting the dishes into the dishwasher
  • closing the shower curtain after showering
  • wiping my feet off so the floor doesn’t get all wet after showering
  • vacuuming
  • dusting
  • patching walls
  • painting
  • hanging frames
  • leaving my clothes on the drying rack for too long
  • stacking things up on the floor and not putting them away
  • sewing buttons
  • okay, sewing at ALL

And to be fair, a few things I am good at:

  • sending out birthday cards, anniversary cards, thinking of you cards
  • taking the trash out
  • bringing in the newspaper
  • baking banana bread
  • protecting the car
  • finding “Infiniti-approved” parking spots (used to be “Saab-approved”)
  • getting the mail on Saturdays
  • feeding Data on Saturday and Sunday mornings so he’ll STFU and let us sleep
  • changing Data’s litter
  • putting groceries away
  • opening new DVDs
  • getting my clothes out of the dryer in less than 2 days
  • cutting up lettuce, cauliflower, carrots, celery, and strawberries
  • pushing very heavy things up the stairs

Ha. I’m good at all the things that really matter.

Today’s Idiom: to throw down the gauntlet – to challenge someone

Steven thought he was better at Xbox Tetris than me, so I had to throw down the gauntlet, and show off my mad Tetris skills.

Just so long as “protecting the car” and finding “Infiniti-approved parking spots” doesn’t mean you’ve become one of those people that parks across the middle line of two parking spaces in order to provide a more-than-sufficient buffer around your car. Promise me that.

  2. Cat. says:

Hey, if you want lessons in moping, I’m the person to see! πŸ˜‰

I’m also good at pushing very heavy things upstairs. I wonder why? …how odd. Why are we doing this?

  3. The can do’s are just about even with the can not’s – so you’re golden. I much rather have the ability to find Infiniti – Approved spots instead of the ability to take clothes off the drying rack (which I am so bad at doing).

  4. i don’t have a green thumb either… i had to put my bamboo plant up high where the kitties can’t get to it… they seem to enjoy nibbling on my plants too!!!
i like your lists and like Gina said, they seem to be about even and as long as it works for you and Steven that’s all that matters!! πŸ™‚

  5. Nilsa S. says:

Did you mean “moping” as you put it, or “mopping” as I think you meant it. Because me? I’m pretty damn good at moping, but I suck ass at mopping. πŸ™‚

  6. Jenn says:

I’m totally, 100% anti-house plant. I can not, for the life of me, keep them alive longer than a few days. I can grow anything outside, especially if it’s planted in the ground, but in the house? Not a chance.

  7. Ok, I just realized I forgot to comment on Data’s cuteness! Look at those eyes! I’m pretty sure he’s saying “Mooom! Not again – Dad! Make her ttop, puh-lease…!

  8. sizzle says:

I think changing cat litter should make you immune to having to do any other chores. I mean, forget sweeping! πŸ™‚

  9. kilax says:

kapgar – That is not us AT ALL! When I say “Infinit-Approved,” I mean we are parking on an end spot, close to the curb, at the VERY Back of the parking lot. We get our exercise that way. And by “protecting the car” I mean I yell at Steven’s friends when they lean on it or try to use it as a surface to write checks… okay, that only happened ONCE.

Cat. – Ha ha! We are strong women, that is why we can do it! Oh wait, why ARE we doing it? I’d rather do it myself than hire a crew πŸ˜‰

Gina (Mannyed) – I tried to make them somewhat even. I am sure Steven could add a few things to each list. And that stupid drying rack… once my stuff is dry, I just don’t feel like dealing with it anymore!

CourtneyInControl – Bamboo is so cool. I should get some for upstairs. Surely I wouldn’t kill THAT?

Nilsa S. – HA HA HA!! πŸ˜€ I meant “mopping’! I am also good at moping. I think I’ll be doing it a bit of it this week actually.

Jenn – I expected you to say the opposite! So this is why you have such big plans for outside πŸ˜‰

Gina (Mannyed) – Aww… thanks πŸ™‚ Steven actually put the tag on him, and then I was the big dork who wanted to take a picture. Hey, it inspired this post, so what the hell πŸ™‚

sizzle – I KNOW!!!! Someone *ahem* does not want to do it on a daily basis. I should get major points for it. πŸ˜‰

  10. ajooja says:

I used to be a really good cook but now I’m really good at saying, “Where do you want to eat?” πŸ™‚

  11. Steven says:

Then I made you eat humble pie when I destroyed you at Tetris…

  12. Lumpy says:

I know all about protecting the cars although, I think after 17 years of marriage, the husband has relaxed a bit. Almost to the point of giving up? Whenever he says, “What happened to your car! What did you hit!?” I just shrug and say, “I dunno, what ARE you talking about?” and play like I didn’t hit the cart return at the store! I’ll never admit it either.

How’d that humble pie taste? Ha! Ha! Ha! Priceless!

PS See, now I can write whatever I want here or at my blog because my husband doesn’t read it — he’s been invited but just could care less. So, looks like you were busted out here, I love it!

  13. tori says:

The pushing heavy things up stairs is something I (and my oldest daughter) are good at. Apparently that is an important life skill since there are at least 3 of us who do it!

  14. Cheryl says:

Sometimes, it’s no so much that I suck at doing those things, I just don’t wanna do ’em. you know?

  15. suze says:

I’m really not domestically inclined at all. Sadly, unless I come into a lot of cash, hiring someone to do all chores domestic for me is out of the question. Luckily I have a fiance that believes in sharing the household chores, and is also a really good cook. I get away with cleaning the bathrooms, helping with the dishes and looking after the cats. Oh, and dusting. Because we both hate dusting, but I hate it less. I’m also the gardener. although mine is not a green thumb, it is better than his.

Oh, and I’m the queen of moping. Not mopping. Moping. πŸ˜‰

  16. SJ says:

Data is so good about letting you put things on him! He’s like, “Yeah, I OWN this tag.”

I detest all manner of domestic chores. This is how I know I was meant to be born wealthy. Or maybe marry wealthy. Oops.

But y’know, I figure there’s a reason why God made me so good at telling people what to do. πŸ˜‰

  17. Wani says:

I love this post! I suck at alot of those things too. And I love banana bread! My grandma’s recipe is the best!

  18. kilax says:

ajooja – HEY! I’m good at that too! Maybe I should add it to my list! πŸ˜‰

    Steven – In your DREAMS.

Lumpy – I feel like I have been conditioned to protect cars since my family is all so into them… if anything happened involving a car growing up, I would get that sinking feeling in my stomach because I had to tell my dad. And yeah… Steven reads this every night… sometimes he has… interesting comments πŸ˜‰

tori – Maybe it is a skill that we have inherited from our great caveman ancestors – pushing things around! Wait! They didn’t have stairs though… πŸ˜‰

Cheryl – Yeah. I don’t want to do them… so I do them and do a crappy job instead…

suze – We try to do a split like that too. It works out well sometimes, but a lot of times, it does come down to “who hates this chore the least?” I also wish we had money to pay someone to clean… hey, at least we can MOPE! πŸ˜‰

SJ – Data’s docile from time to time… but he lets us know when he’s unhappy! Hee hee… I was thinking the same thing yesterday – I would rather tell someone what to do than do it myself (of course, I was thinking about designing and building something, but I think it can be applied here πŸ˜‰ )

Wani – So it’s not just me! πŸ™‚ Want to share that recipe? We are still trying to perfect ours!

  19. Data says:

Why are you not blogging? I look forward to reading your blog while I nap on your desk.

  20. kilax says:

Data – I can’t think of anything to blog about, except you, bowling, and how frustrated I am at work. πŸ™ Any ideas?

  21. martymankins says:

Love the cat. And regardless of any labels. they do grow bigger.

  22. kilax says:

martymankins – Ha ha! Our cat has actually been shrinking. He is a bit more active and has lost a pound or two! He’s very svelte now πŸ˜‰
