It runs in the family
Remember this photo from last year? (from the January 15th post)
My sister and her boyfriend got into an accident today on their way to Mall of America. They hit a patch of ice on the highway, spun out and were sideways on the road. Then a car hit them and ripped her front bumper off. Luckily, everyone is okay, but while they were waiting for the cops to arrive, they saw 6 more cars spin out in the same spot and go into the ditch. Yikes.
When it happened to me, I was driving and spun out on a bridge. I ran into one side of the bridge, did a 180, the hit the other side. When it stopped, I was facing the wrong way on the road, but all the cars coming towards me had (thankfully!) stopped. I did a 3-point turn and kept driving. Then I pulled over at a gas station and realized my bumper was hanging off. Oops. Some nice guy helped me rip it off and put it in the back seat. I told him thanks and bought him a cup of coffee.
What really sucked about that happening was that my dad had just replaced my back bumper for me (some asshole hit it earlier the previous year, then drove off), and the accident put another huge dent in it.
But anyway! My poor sister! This girl does not have good luck with cars! I don’t seem to either. Us Ilax women don’t belong on the road. We belong in the back of a limo. Or at least in the passenger seat of a Saab 9-3.
I’m glad she’s OK. 😐
I spun out on a patch of bridge ice once too. Luckily, I did a perfect 360 spin and kept going. I freaked out a little and stopped to get a cup of coffee and clear my head. I made it home safe and sound.
The next day, I saw where a highway patrolman was killed a few minutes later while helping someone else who spun out on the same bridge. I think of that night every time I drive by the cross in his honor.
My wife had a similar incident once, and even though I wasn’t there, that story scares me more than anything I ever experienced myself.
i’m glad that your sister and her boyfriend (and everyone else) is ok!!! accidents suck… last wednesday was my one year “anniversary” of my totaling passat #1(also the same day passat #2 had to go to the shop)… you should really talk to Steven about the the limo, not only because you deserve it but no more accidents, driving stress, or shoveling your car out of snow either!! 🙂
That is so scary! I’m glad your sister is okay. 🙂
Ohhh…Good to hear everyone is safe. I’ve also spun out on bridges and it is the single scariest thing ever. To be quite honest I think I belong on a hovercraft.
ajooja – Isn’t it the scariest thing ever? You are just driving along, being careful, and there is nothing you can do when you hit a patch of ice. At least we all know now to be extra careful on bridges. I honestly don’t live driving in the winter anymore!
CourtneyInControl – I remember your accident happened right after mine… in your freak Texan winter weather! I will ask Steven about the limo… ha ha ha!
diane – Thanks 🙂 I am happy to hear she is okay too. And happy she called me to keep me in the loop!
FrancesDanger – HA HA! Hovercraft = brilliant idea!
!!! Sooo glad they are ok. Accidents suck. I’m still tramatized from the one I had in June. Dont forget to come pick me up in that limo!
i’m glad they are ok. car accidents are so scary!
Gina (Mannyed) – I didn’t hear about your June accident… did I? 🙁
sizzle – They’re the worst part of winter in the midwest (oh yeah, plus the cold, the wet shoes, the frozen nose, etc.)
Kim! It was my back that was hit, but still very much like your accident! We do belong in the back of a limo, very true!! 😉
Oh yeah, I’m sure the auto insurance policy loves to hear that about Ilax women. I see the rates jumping for your next payment due date.
I am glad she is ok!!!
I am with you on the not being behind a wheel…I know I shouldn’t be LOL!! I am not a horrible driver but really I have the worst luck.
I’m glad your sister and her boyfriend are OK!
I once spun out on the Kennedy Expressway late at night during a snowfall. I did a 180 and ended up facing head-on into traffic. Fortunately, traffic was so light and road conditions were so horrid that nobody was driving too quickly and the few cars out there were able to get out of my way.
After the initial shock, I steered the car back around and kept heading south on the expressway, terrified as all get-out and too stunned to do anything else but keep going. That was when the risks of winter driving became all too real for me.
I hate winter. And I think it hates me too.
