But then management would make each day a 20 hour day, to make up for “lost time”!
Then again, for people like me whose work requires long hours of concentration and whose volume of work completed accelerates towards the end of the day as problems become clearer, that might actually result in greater overall productivity…
To get on my soapbox for a minute: I’m very rarely in favor of banning anything, but if I could, I’d outlaw salaried employment altogether, leaving per-hour and per-project work instead. The idea is for employers to base pay on a rate which costs the employer ever-more as the workload increases, rather than a flat amount disconnected from the amount of time and/or effort expended to complete it. The problem is that the current scenario with salaried pay has no incentive for the employer to avoid giving employees more work given a constant (and often arbitrary) deadline…
The boss’s wife used to do that. She’d come in Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday around noon. Then, she got to where she’d mainly just come in every other Thursday to do payroll. Now, she just comes in about once a month to go through the mail and pay a few bills.
I could handle my job working three days a week. I always work extra when I have a deadline, but a three-day week would be great most of the time.
Hi! I'm Kim, a 34-year-old living in Chicagoland with my husband, Steven, and our cats, Khali, Apollo, and Starbuck. I work in the design industry (architecture), follow a vegan lifestyle, am addicted to running, and am an ACE certified personal trainer (working at Essential Fitness, LLC ("Efit"))! I write about a variety of topics, and consider this a "life" blog - a place I can share anything that's on my mind. Please visit the "About" page to get a better idea of who I am! :-)

E – I am with you 100% about salary. IT IS KILLING ME RIGHT NOW. I am working an extra 20 hours every two weeks. That’s ridiculous! Woe is me 🙁
Lisa – let’s start a revolution!
CourtneyInControl – I bet it was especially hard for you to get back into the hang of work after your sick leave!
Gina (Mannyed) – I wondered where you were! 😉
sizzle – I’ll add your name to my petition 😉
ajooja – guess you can get away with anything when you are married to the boss!
ACK! Not me! I can barely get my work done in 40 hours, much less 24!!!
SJ – I am happy one of us is able to keep busy all week! 😉
