Running with the phone

By , June 30, 2012 5:40 am

Emily asked on my Thursday post if I take photos while running with my phone or a real camera. For the longest time, I carried an actual camera with me on long runs. I just strapped it on my hydration belt. I even (stupidly) had it on me during the 2010 Chicago Marathon. I gave Steven a broken camera to use. That was smart (not).

I had my phone with me during the Chicago Marathon too. In my bra. It got ruined by my salty sweet. Smart (not).

After awhile I learned that I should focus on running and not taking pictures, so I stopped carrying the camera. Smart (for realz).

Also, I ditched the belt for a handheld, and got a phone that took sort of nice pictures. Then in February I got the iPhone. And I carry it with me on every single run. In my bra. But I learned my lesson. It goes in a plastic bag. Smart (I learned!).

That’s my phone not a funny nipple. I miss my long nails.

Some people have told me they think it’s odd that I keep my phone in my bra. Whatevs. It’s like nature’s secret pocket. A lot of things can go in there. Wow. I am going to stop right now. Smart (for realz, again).

Do you carry your phone with you when you run? Why or why not?

I do it so I can call for help if something stupid happens to me, because I was doing something stupid. Me not always so smart.

LOL! I never thought of using my bra to carry things around…
I rarely carry a phone when I run from home, only if it would be a long out and back and I would be nervous about something happening to me. But I usually do have it on me when I run a race, in case I get separated from my family and need to meet up with them.

  2. I do just incase something happens as well! Especially with races, it’s so much easier to have a phone to find someone at the end! 🙂

Hmm…yet another thing I’m missing out on because I don’t have boobs. JK I just got an iPhone and I’m going to start carrying it on at least long runs. Because that’s probably the smart thing to do in case of an emergency and so I can take pictures! I brought it in my belt the other day. Now you have me wondering if I should put it in a plastic bag.

I do, but it’s my music source, my GPS tracker, my camera, AND my “If I End Up Needing Someone to Come Rescue Me” device. Thank goodness for iPhones and armbands. 🙂

Nature’s secret pocket!!! Hahaha I’m going to have to start using that! I only bring my phone with me if I’m doing a solo long run, running somewhere new, running on a trail by myself, or running somewhere where I want to take photos. But for group runs, or shorter solo runs on familiar streets/paths, I leave it at home or in my car.

  6. Yes, the bra is natures pocket and that is where I regularly store valuables 😉 I rarely run with my phone though. I like to fall off the map when I run.

I dont run with anything in my bra. My friend did that in the marathon and had serious chaffing (carrying GUs). I always wish i ran with a camera when I dont have it because that is always when there are the best sunrises.

Yeah, you totally have to lube up there if you are going to carry it there! For one HM I pinned GUs inside my shorts and I think I still have marks from it! Those things have sharp corners (and I even rounded the corners with scissors!!!)

I carry my iPhone with me when I run by myself. Mainly because I use it for music, too. I wear it in an armband but that makes it hard to use it to take pics!

I’ve carried my camera with me once on a training run. I wanted to take many photos of my favorite local trail (dirt) system. Ended up with around 100 photos which are on my FB page but only got 2/3 of my route in time it normally takes to run the same loop as I was stopping so much. Next time I ran same trail I tripped on a rock/root and went down – glad the camera was at home that time. Oh it was a chilly day so camera was able to go in jacket pocket.

I like to carry a phone on me just in case. I will either put it in my spy belt, or even carry it for shorter runs. I just feel naked without it. And honestly I need to work on taking less pics and running more too. But sometimes I get caught up in the beauty of the run and must capture it.

I am way too scared to NOT run with my phone! Probably because my mom has had some scary things happen to her on her runs & she’s usually not had her phone on her & it was pretty awful. Plus, it’s how I listen to music & GPS, etc. So, basically, my phone is my lifeline when I run, ha! I use an armband and it doesn’t really bother me.

The best thing about you running with your phone is when you answer your phone. During marathons. : )

Ha ha ha ha ha. You know what? It was easier to text on my last phone while running then on the iPhone. Sad.

Woo hoo, thanks for the shoutout! =D I don’t carry a phone with me when I run, but I probably should for safety purposes. I need to get one of those runner ID bracelets, too. During training runs I usually don’t carry anything with me other than my keys, and I need to be better about making safety a priority…

I rarely run with my phone but I do if I’m going out on a long run with my camelbak. It fits nicely into the pocket. Most of the time I have people with me though so I don’t like I have to carry my phone.

  15. I never used to run with a phone – because I’m too easily distracted and I’d be checking the phone for calls and messages even if I turned off the sound. My mom used to get so mad at me that I’d also refuse to run with an ID, because I’m stupid. =)

I do not carry my phone when I run. Now granted, I don’t run on the roads or pathways – it’s all at a gym – but the weight of the phone to me is a hinderance. I much prefer my iPod nano (both the 5ht gen and 6th gen models). The 6th gen gets huge props for being really small and with a clip, it’s easy to put anywhere on my running clothes. The 5th gen is larger, but it has the click wheel on it which makes it easy to do blind song changes (meaning, I can leave it in my pocket and just feel for the Next arrow and click).

But… BUT… I just downloaded the Nike+ Running app and want to try it out (like Sarah and Vahid have as well as a few other of my smartphone connected friends). So I might have to try this “running with the phone” measure.
