Friday Question #17

Do you love or loathe having house guests?

Steven and I really love having house guests. We like cleaning the house and stocking the pantry, in anticipation of our guests arrival. We like making special meals, or taking our guests to our favorite restaurants. We like to show (off) the work we have done on our town home… especially Steven’s schmancy pants A/V system. We like to stay up late, play fun games, and entertain.

Of course, I ask because my family is coming to visit, and from what I’ve heard from other people, not everyone gets as excited about that as I do.

I am also wondering…

Do you have any good house guests stories?

Now, this isn’t a good story, per se, but it is definitely… interesting. A few years ago I was on a school trip in NYC. Our departure flight was canceled and we ended up on a flight that put us in the O’Hare airport overnight before our connecting flight home.

Of course, I looked at that as an opportunity to see Steven. And it just happened to be on Valentine’s Day! Since I am so nice, I asked three of my friends if they wanted to come stay at our house in the guest bedroom or on the couch so they did not have to sleep in the airport/front the money for a hotel.

Steven was really nice and picked us up in the middle of the night. We all woke up early the next day to catch our flight home. Trying to be nice, I asked my friends if they wanted some breakfast – maybe milk and cereal? I told them I wasn’t feeling awake enough to have any, but they all said yes.

So, we are standing around in the kitchen, them eating their cereal, and me and Steven chatting, when one my friends makes a funny face, places her bowl on the counter, and runs into our powder room and forces herself to throw up into the sink.

Yeah, that alarmed us, especially the other two.

She comes out and we ask what was wrong. “Oh nothing,” she brushes it off. “There were just some live bugs in my cereal.”

Everyone dumped their cereal in the sink. Steven and I were mortified. How did this happen?! She had a different cereal than everyone else! Did she confuse the pieces of cereal for bugs since it was so early in the morning? Or did she actually feel something moving around in her mouth?

Well, it hasn’t happened since. And luckily, I was still friends with everyone after that. That girl was even one of my bridesmaids.

What is the most awful thing you have ever eaten (whether it be food or non-food, intentional or not intentional, completely eaten or just tasted)?

A few years ago, Steven and I decided we wanted to experience “new” vegetables. We thought, “Brussels sprouts always get a bad rep! We’ll try those!”

So we went and bought them. We took them home. We washed them. We cooked them. We sat down to eat them with our meal.

I bit into one… and it had a white worm in it. I don’t think I have ever gagged so much in my life.

Then we realized there were LOTS of white worms. How do you NOT notice white worms when you are cooking something?!

Yuck! We have never eaten them again!

What is something you really enjoy doing that is a chore or a bore for many people?

I love to unpack my luggage after a trip. I get all excited about it on the way home. I like putting things were they belong – dirty clothes in the hamper, clean clothes in the closet, my laptop onto my desk, books back on the shelf, bathroom supplies back into the bathroom… you get the idea.

It just makes me feel good knowing everything is in its place.

What is your favorite holiday movie?

I know, I know – not a very original question! But since I love holiday movies (with the exception of two which will remain nameless) I had to ask… because maybe there is a really good one I don’t know about!

My favorite is White Christmas. I don’t remember the first time I saw it, but I remember seeing it on television many times with my mother. I loved the part when the girls sang “Sisters, sisters”… and I always loved all the dancing scenes! Then of course, I got older and finally understood the cute little plot. Now I make sure to watch it a few times each holiday season. I usually don’t get to watch it with my mother anymore, but we still sing the songs from the movie and annoy the people around us!

P.S. Are you participating in Blog Crush Day next Friday? I sure am!

If snow could fall in any flavor, what flavor would you choose?

I am definitely in a caramel mood today. Even if it was sticky, it would be worth it.

Are you a “Black Friday” bargain shopper / what is your preferred method for buying gifts?

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving and unofficially the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. The day was originally called “Black Friday” because of the heavy traffic in stores, but it also refers to the beginning of the period when retailers are “in the black” (making a profit). Most stores open very early – as early as 5am – and offer “doorbuster” deals to lure people into their store.

I’ll admit that I’ve done this shopping a few times with my mom. When I was in middle school, we would wake up at 4:30 and rush to the stores to buy the “special” deals. Of course, I didn’t actually have any money, so I was just along for the ride – for the crazy, crazy ride of mostly middle-aged women pushing and screaming to get the last Tickle Me Elmo.

When I was in high school I had to work the day after Thanksgiving, so I didn’t do it anymore. Maybe my younger sister and mother still went. I am not sure.

Now, I think it is CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY. One of the malls near our house opened at midnight last night, to have special “doorbuster” deals between midnight and 5am! The last thing I was thinking about last night was shopping, I just wanted to clean my kitchen and go to bed! I started getting electronic ads for today’s sales in the beginning of the week – the ads told me to “create my shopping list early” so I knew what to look for on Friday.

I think I will do most of this year’s shopping in stores, but try to avoid these crazy shopping days. I just don’t have the patience for it!

(Ironically, my mother called me while I was writing this – she was out shopping and wanted to ask me what kind of underwear I like… ha ha ha!)

Friday Question #2

What was your favorite thing to pretend when you were a young child?

Oh, it’s so embarrassing, but I must share it, because that’s what I do here – share embarrassing secrets and stories.

I used to pretend that I had an identical twin sister. But I didn’t talk to her like she was an “invisible friend,” because I pretended that she lived in Florida, and that when she came to visit Iowa, I would go stay in Florida in her place. So she sort of “pretend existed” in my mind.

Seems innocent, right? Well, I told one of my friends that I really did have a twin sister who lived in Florida (this was in grade school by the way). And I would pretend that I was the other twin sister from time to time. My friend would say, “Kim?” and I would say, “No, I’m Kim’s twin sister,” and be all snotty about it.

That friend still thinks I have a twin sister.

Just kidding!

A little history: I started “Friday Questions” back in April of this year. I often found myself without much time to blog on Fridays and thought a good way to give myself a break and to learn more about my readers would be to ask a random question. I supply my answer in the post, and you are welcome to leave yours in the comments section.

I really enjoy reading your answers… as well as all your comments on other posts, so please don’t be shy. I won’t call out any names here – wink wink!

Without further ado:

If you could own one original work of art, what would you choose?

For me, it would be Van Gogh’s Starry Night. For some reason, I am just drawn to this painting! It resides at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City – and I have never even seen it! Someday… someday… maybe I can satisfy myself with a print until then!
