What I love about spring in Chicago

By , April 23, 2008 6:04 am

I called my dad yesterday to tell him how excited I was to see a grey Lamborghini Murcielago on my walk to the train Monday night in Chicago.

“It’s one of the things I love out there, dad” I proclaimed. “As soon as the weather gets warm, you see all these awesome cars – Aston Martins, Ferraris, Lamborghinis…”

“Yeah. I didn’t see anything like that on my way home from work Monday.”

“What, you didn’t see any Lamborghinis?”

“No,” he replied. “I don’t think there are even 10 people in Waterloo [Iowa] who can pronounce it.”

Ha ha.

“I was really excited to see it,” I continue.

“Yeah. It’s nice to know that at least someone enjoys what they’re driving.”

Yeah, that guy in the Lamborghini and Steven in his Infiniti.

The point of me writing this is not to point out how funny and sarcastic my dad is. Nor is it to bore you with another post about cars (although I probably have).

I just wonder… why do I notice these things? Why do cars interest me? Why don’t they interest some people? Why do I get really excited when I see a nice car?

My dad is a mechanic, but I know nothing about how cars WORK. I just know when I see one I like – it’s usually streamlined, aggressive, and curvy.

I have a list of the cars I would like to own. But I haven’t even driven a quarter of them. It’s just an aesthetic thing.

Maybe it’s time for me to get in the garage with Steven… and help him with the project car. Oh yes. The infamous (in my mind) Datsun 1978 280Z. That’s a whole ‘nother post.

Kim’s suggestion to go to Red Robin for lunch carried the day, although not everyone got the Gardenburger Royal Red Robin burger.

Do you love or loathe having house guests?

Steven and I really love having house guests. We like cleaning the house and stocking the pantry, in anticipation of our guests arrival. We like making special meals, or taking our guests to our favorite restaurants. We like to show (off) the work we have done on our town home… especially Steven’s schmancy pants A/V system. We like to stay up late, play fun games, and entertain.

Of course, I ask because my family is coming to visit, and from what I’ve heard from other people, not everyone gets as excited about that as I do.

I am also wondering…

Do you have any good house guests stories?

Now, this isn’t a good story, per se, but it is definitely… interesting. A few years ago I was on a school trip in NYC. Our departure flight was canceled and we ended up on a flight that put us in the O’Hare airport overnight before our connecting flight home.

Of course, I looked at that as an opportunity to see Steven. And it just happened to be on Valentine’s Day! Since I am so nice, I asked three of my friends if they wanted to come stay at our house in the guest bedroom or on the couch so they did not have to sleep in the airport/front the money for a hotel.

Steven was really nice and picked us up in the middle of the night. We all woke up early the next day to catch our flight home. Trying to be nice, I asked my friends if they wanted some breakfast – maybe milk and cereal? I told them I wasn’t feeling awake enough to have any, but they all said yes.

So, we are standing around in the kitchen, them eating their cereal, and me and Steven chatting, when one my friends makes a funny face, places her bowl on the counter, and runs into our powder room and forces herself to throw up into the sink.

Yeah, that alarmed us, especially the other two.

She comes out and we ask what was wrong. “Oh nothing,” she brushes it off. “There were just some live bugs in my cereal.”

Everyone dumped their cereal in the sink. Steven and I were mortified. How did this happen?! She had a different cereal than everyone else! Did she confuse the pieces of cereal for bugs since it was so early in the morning? Or did she actually feel something moving around in her mouth?

Well, it hasn’t happened since. And luckily, I was still friends with everyone after that. That girl was even one of my bridesmaids.

Whenever I visit my family in Iowa, I feel so out of the loop of what is going on with everyone.

My younger brother quit his job a few months ago and is working at a completely different place. Didn’t know that.

My sister had a car accident (not a serious one) in December. Didn’t know that.

My parents bought a “new-for-them” van. Didn’t know that.

That is the bad part about living so far away from your family – you can never really be completely “in-the-know” with their lives.

Now that my sister is in college, and I feel like we can finally relate to each other, I would like to spend more time with her. But she’s busy, I’m busy, we live so far away, I hate to talk on the phone… most of our communication is emails and facebook now.

I feel like a broken record. I know I have mentioned this before. But I think this is an unsolvable problem for me. I like working in Chicago, and my family happens to live in Iowa. Until the day that Chicago’s suburbs begin to sprawl into Iowa, and I can take a rapid transit train to see them, I will have to deal with it.
