Make today magnet worthy

By , May 9, 2018 7:30 am

In a bit of cheesiness Saturday morning as Rachel and I were getting ready to leave the house to go to the race, I pointed to a magnet (of this photo) on our fridge from the 2016 race and said “Maybe today will be magnet worthy!”

“It will be!” she said. “Make today magnet worthy!”

And it totally was a magnet worthy day! Ha, and luckily, Shitterfly (purposeful misspelling) has a free magnet offer today so I can order it tonight! Woot!

Even though my PR wasn’t huge (less than two minutes), it feels amazing to know my training actually resulted in something. And that I didn’t give up on my goal when it got tough in the end.

I don’t run for PRs. I run because I love it and I need it for stress relief. But I haven’t had a PR in so long that I forgot how exciting they are! How accomplished and encouraged they make you feel! I CAN DO ANYTHING!

So, yeah… still riding that high. Ha.

The weekend!

By , May 7, 2018 6:25 am

Woo hoo! What a good weekend!

FRIDAY!

Rachel arrived mid Friday afternoon and we got to hang on the deck for a bit before we went to packet pickup for the Wisconsin Half Marathon.

Ha, Data greeted Rachel outside, on his leash. Khali made eye contact with Rachel while here, but scurried away after a bit, each time. Progress.

Rachel brought me flowers (since I wrecked my car and because she’s a sweetie)

After packet pickup, we had MOD Pizza, then went to Bobbi’s to drop off her race packet (and chat for a bit!). I enjoyed visiting with Rachel, and was especially giggly after I had an Angry Orchard at MOD! I’m glad she came early so we could hang out a bit before the race.

SATURDAY!

I slept really poorly Friday night… but had been for the previous three nights anyway! I was up at 5:00 am, and we were out the door just after 5:30 to get to the race. We happily ran in to Bobbi and got to chat with her some more!

We also had fun chatting with the wife of the man who took the photo above. It’s fun to meet random people at races and connect with them over your love for running!

I ran the race and PR’d!

Then I enjoyed cheering people on with Steven, and talking to everyone after they finished to see how their race went, and whine about the hot sun together.

Rachel running a strong finish!

We hung out a bit longer, then we headed home, where I had a date with one of the awesome bath bombs Anne sent me last week!

Then it was on to a typical Saturday – we ate lunch and watched a movie (Jeff, Who Lives at Home), and ran errands. My new car has been getting detailed and having a few things replaced at the dealer, so have a loaner (which feels like a cushy boat compared to my car!).

Steven was in a baking mood and made this bread while I wrote my race recap,

OMG IT’S DELICIOUS

then we watched the last episode of Battlestar Galactica with dinner!

SUNDAY!

Ha, Data woke me up just after 5:00 am to eat… then didn’t eat. Sigh. He’s been getting skinnier and skinnier. Some days he eats a lot, and some, a little. We talked to the vet last week and there are some more tests he can do to see if it’s a thyroid or malabsorption issue. We are going to make sure it’s not just his food and him being picky, so we got him some other food to try, before we take him back in to the vet. What a turd.

I stayed up for a bit, then slept from 8:00 to just after 9:00. Luxurious! I woke up to Steven making breakfast!!!

I rode my bike (inside) after breakfast to shake out my legs. Then I picked up sticks while Steven mowed and trimmed the yard. I was feeling optimistic that my legs were gonna feel okay because I could bend over so much to pick up sticks, without pain!

But my quads buckled three times during our afternoon walk, so yeah, definitely feeling the effects of a hard race!!!

We had our normal Sunday evening of chores and dinner before heading upstairs for an early bedtime (we go upstairs before 9:00, fall asleep around 9:30). We’ve been trying to make sure we start the week out with enough sleep! I’ve been having a lot of anxiety dreams and waking up every hour or so for several days now. Ugh, I hope that stops soon, because even when I get enough sleep, I don’t feel like I did!

Lucky

By , May 4, 2018 4:15 am

Alright, so here’s what happened with my car! (I wanted to share it with a few people first, before I posted about it here.)

On Wednesday April 18th, I went to Iowa to visit family. I knew it was supposed to snow, and had stuff with me to spend the night, if the weather looked too bad to travel.

But, I decided to go home that night. I wanted to spend time with Steven and the kitties before I left early Friday for my trip to Dallas. So I left Iowa just before 8:45 pm to make the four hour trip home.

I felt alert and awake. The drive through Iowa was rainy, but easy, and I was glad there weren’t many people on the road.

A bit after I got in to Illinois, the rain turned to slush. I was actually grateful to be driving through lots of construction on the highway – we all had to slow down anyway, might as well slow down to drive in that crap.

But I was relieved when I got to the edge of the Chicago suburbs and the roads were obviously treated differently and felt less slick. The previous part of the drive had been draining. Just an hour left to home!

Yeah, you know where this is headed.

I was a half hour from home, on our eight lane highway (four lanes each side) when I went in to the left lane to pass someone. Note: I was NOT driving like an ass (ha, I feel like I need to say that – I drive aggressively out here, like everyone else, but I am not an idiot in bad weather).

And my car started swerving. To the right, to the left, then all the way in a right circle, having me face traffic.

YAY!

I was surprisingly HELLA calm during all this. Saying things to myself like “don’t overcorrect the steering,” “don’t slam on the brakes,” and also, “Oh! There goes a semi. Phew, he didn’t hit me. Oh good, that car didn’t hit me either.”

I could tell my back right corner was going to slam in to the median. “Okay Kim, maybe try the brakes now, to minimize the impact.”

CRUNCH.

Ugh.

I ended up facing traffic in the left shoulder. Hey, good thing that all happened near the shoulder, because my car wouldn’t move. The engine would turn over, but I’d press the gas pedal, and nothing. While I couldn’t tell how bad the damage was, I thought for sure I should at least be able to drive it a bit or get more in to the shoulder.

But I couldn’t.

So the actual scariest part of all this was sitting on the highway, facing traffic, hoping someone didn’t hit the same slush/ice as me, and run in to me.

I called Steven right away (he had left his phone on since I was driving so late, thankfully!) then 911. Then I realized I told 911 the wrong highway (94 instead of 294 DUH KIM) so I called them back.

And waited for the police to show up. Hoping no one would hit me, as my windows started to fog over and I couldn’t see out of them because the electronics were failing in my car.

THANKFULLY, a plow came by, stopped on the other shoulder, then drove over and blocked me. THANK HEAVENS FOR HIM.

Then the cop showed up. And we were all confused as to why my car wouldn’t do anything when I pressed the gas pedal. Ugh. So I continued to sit in my car, waiting for the tow. The plow left, but the cop stayed there, and I hoped with his lights on, people would give him space, and not hit either of us!

After what felt like an eternity (maybe forty minutes?) the tow arrived. He took my car, and the cop took me to an oasis, where Steven met me.

Funny thing: I had a zillion bags in my car, because I thought I might spend the night. So I asked the cop if I could bring all that stuff with me, and he said yes, but he didn’t have much room, so I was sitting in the back of his car, cramped in with all my crap, ha! Note: use a suitcase next time, Kim, geesh.

The cop was great. The plow guy was a LIFESAVER (maybe literally?). I was so glad Steven had his phone on, and could come get me.

Steven and I got home after 2:00 am and fell asleep around 3:00. Then were up in a few hours. Yay! I called Geico immediately and they’ve been AWESOME! While I was on the phone reporting the incident, the rental car and inspector people were already calling me. Top notch service from them. [not sponsored]

We were shocked when Geico told us they were gonna try to fix the car. We knew, as a 2005, it wasn’t worth much anymore. But hey, yeah, please fix it.

Oh! I almost forgot to mention – the day before this trip to Iowa? We had just put $1000 in the car for maintenance stuff. Ha!

I went on my trip to Dallas, and came back, and got a call from the body shop that they found a lot more damage. We were not surprised. Then we got a call last Tuesday that yes, they were declaring it a total loss.

Ugh.

Geico made everything super easy for us. We picked up the check for our car on Thursday, then visited it to get stuff out of it.

My poor baby. We weren’t supposed to part this way.

This was my first “new” car after college. We treated her well and she took care of us (obviously). She had just hit 200,000 miles and I knew she had a lot more in her. Since my new car is basically a replacement of what I had, I expect the same.

So yeah, long arse story about an accident! Oh, and I was fine! My neck was sore for four to five days, but it feels better now!

Emotionally though, the effect was a longer. It was a roller coaster ride, not thinking they would fix it, then them saying they would, then them saying they wouldn’t, then the rush to get a new car, when we weren’t in a position to. And there was some guilt for not telling some people until things were all worked out.

But yeah. All better now!

And I was extremely lucky I walked out of this fine and no one else hit me. It’s a good thing it was late at night and there weren’t that many vehicles on the highway.

F*cking April snowstorms.

  • These oreos. Delish. [not sponsored]

  • THIS HUMMUS. Heart eyes emoji! And paired with Everything Pretzel Slims?! Cat making home alone face emoji! I’m not actually a plain Sabra hummus fan but their flavored hummuses are D-O-P-E. If anyone local EVER finds “Taco Inspired,” please let me know! Gina gets it for me when I visit her in Dallas and I can’t find it here! (Yeah, I used their locator tool but I never trust those.) [not sponsored]

  • That random book I picked up at the free library at the train station, The Salt Line, is hands down my favorite novel of the year. I apparently really dig novels set in the near dystopian future, that aren’t written pompously, like that last book I read in this genre. I may check out more by this author, and the books it’s been compared to on Good Reads (Station Eleven and California).
  • I tried to pick up another book yesterday at the train station, but the one I chose had a slight issue… wah. Ha.

  • If the weather is decent for my half marathon on Saturday, I’ll be wearing this guy! I have an old (2013) half marathon PR of 1:51:15. However, summer has arrived here, and I’ve been running in the 70s/80s this week, so we’ll see!

Things I’m excited about in May!

By , May 1, 2018 6:03 am

There’s a lot of fun social stuff going on in May, yay! Here’s what I’m excited about:

  • Getting a massage before this Saturday’s half marathon
  • Running the half
  • Riding my bike outside
  • Going to Cleveland to visit Anne and Terry
  • Taking Jen out for a late birthday celebration
  • My favorite coworker’s son’s first birthday party
  • Our bowling passes starting (we got summer bowling passes this year – you pay a flat fee, then can bowl up to three games, every day, all summer long)
  • The long Memorial Day Weekend
  • Running the Chocoholic 5K with Rachel (and lots of people from the studio where I teach)
  • Going to our first baseball game of the year
  • Running lots of miles and enjoying spring weather before the humidity hits
  • Earlier and earlier sunrises that get my butt out of bed (& associated afternoon naps)

What’s on your list?

Intentionally Quiet

By , April 30, 2018 6:17 am

Some life things have me quite anxious so I’ve been sharing the stress with friends and family offline… but I didn’t mean to be THIS quiet here! Oops! I feel like things are slowly getting better, so hopefully I’ll feel more inspired to write here soon (because I enjoy it, and miss it).

FRIDAY!

Circumstances* required that we replace my car, so Friday night was spent buying a new one. I can’t afford my dream car (I didn’t even test drive one – payments would be $900 a month on it, ha ha ha!!!!), but I can kind of afford to replace my car with a newer version of what I had, and very much loved.

2015 Infiniti QX70

My older brother sent me this when I told him about the new ride. Ha! Half of our texts are about The Fast and the Furious. I love it.

Kimbot is the name of my car

Acquiring a new ride was a huge source of anxiety, and I feel a bit relieved it’s done. Unfortunately, we weren’t planning on getting a new car right meow (we’d been hoping to get a sedan for Steven in the next year), so we’ll need to adjust our budgeting.

SATURDAY!

On Saturday I skipped my run before class and tried to sleep in. I later regretted that. Now’s the time of year when it’s getting light out shortly after 5:00. If I am up (I was, to feed the cats) I should stay up and run. (And nap later!!!)

I taught fitness boxing, had lunch with Steven, then we ran some errands, and fixed our broken mailbox. A plow ran in to our mailbox during an early February storm. It was crooked, but still usable, so we decided to wait to fix it until we were mostly certain it wouldn’t snow again. Hopefully now is not too early!

This would be the old broken one, not the new box we installed, ha

I should have run or ridden my bike after that but I was tired AF and read and took a short nap. Man, I was having an off day. We made dinner and watched part of The Hitman’s Bodyguard, and I went to bed still feeling off, and moody.

SUNDAY!

Happily, I woke up in a much better mood on Sunday! I ran, then enjoyed getting groceries in my new car. I prepped the produce for the week when I got home, had lunch with Steven, dusted a bit, then got my nails fixed at the salon (my Monday manicure was already peeling!).

Color: Frenchie Likes To Kiss? Manicures and Starbucks are definitely going to be two things to cut back on to save money.

I rode my bike after that, took a bath, read a bit, then we had dinner and watched The Commuter. Side note: anyone else notice Redbox upped their rental prices fifty cents each on regular DVD and Blu-Ray?

And that was my mundane weekend! But I’ll take it – I need these chill weekends. May and June are really busy for us, but I’ve tried to keep one weekend mostly “open” like this so we can relax if we want.

*Hopefully I’ll share that story another time!

Too short

By , April 22, 2018 4:56 pm

Gawd, what was I thinking when I booked this trip to Dallas? Friday morning through Sunday afternoon?! That’s not much time. I suppose I was thinking “work,” and not about how I was not going to want to stop my vacation and go back to it Monday. Ha.

This was my annual April trip to Dallas to celebrate Luca’s birthday (early) and Gina’s Birthday (late). And while it was a quick trip, I feel like we did a lot!

FRIDAY!

I got in around 11:00 am on Friday. I won’t even go in to the mess that was getting to my terminal at O’Hare. All that matters is that my flight to Dallas was safe (and bonus, early!).

Gina and Steve picked me up and we got salads for lunch then did some shopping in downtown McKinney. Then we picked up Luca from school, and Gina and I ran while the boys cycled.

The sun felt so good!

Luca went to a painting class that night and Gina, Steve, and I got Thai food and adult beverages, woo hoo. We hung out at home after and the adults stayed up late talking. So much to catch up on!

SATURDAY!

I got eight hours of sleep Friday night for the first time in days!!! Gosh, that felt nice. It felt SO NICE, in general, to relax and be taken care of after such a stressful week.

We took a spin class at 9:30, and hung at Starbucks after. For lunch, we checked out Jeff’s Vegan. Gina had looked up a bunch of vegan friendly places for me, which I really appreciated!

Judging the menu, I was worried it was going to be “too healthy tasting” of vegan food but everything we got was delicious! We got Texas Fries and the Pan Fried Onion Cakes for appetizers. I got the Patty Melt as my main dish, and we tried Crispy Sesame Rice Balls and Oreo Cake for dessert.

We liked everything so much we took two more desserts home to try! Yay for vacation indulgences!

We went to Bath & Body Works for funsies after lunch, then went to Main Event to do some mini golf and play a few games for Luca’s Birthday.

Gina made us pasta primavera for dinner and Luca opened his gifts and played with them for a bit. After dinner, we went on a rainy walk, played Operation when we got back, and then the adults hung out!

Operation is JUST as stressful as I remember it!!!

SUNDAY!

Gina and I did a long run with three of her friends. We chatted with them at Starbucks after, then when I got back, it was basically time to pack and get lunch on the way to the airport! Ugh!

We went to a food hall in Plano that had a place that said they have one vegan donut each day (Gina researched and found it for me so I could do my nation wide donut tour there!). Steve actually tried to call the place before we went to confirm, but they had no phone number listed online, and their main location didn’t know the number. Huh?!

So, surprise! We get there and they tell us they rarely have vegan donuts there (and didn’t that day) and that the main place does. Sigh. How annoying that their website was misleading and we couldn’t check! Grrr.

But we hung at the food hall and got different dishes to try. Those places (overcrowded hipster food halls) make both me and Gina a bit anxious, but we survived!

Then we headed to the airport! Already! Wah! They all came in to wait with me, which was nice, because it took twenty-five minutes to drop my bag (I flew Spirit), then several more to get the ticket check area of getting in to security.

Then it felt like it took forever to get home. Ha, always. (I got to the airport at 3:00 pm and got home at 9:00 pm.)

I felt kind of bummed during the end of Saturday and some of Sunday that my vacation was coming to an end, but I tried to stay in the moment and enjoy what was going on! And be grateful it happened, not sad it’s over.

We take a family photo each visit

But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t considering Gina’s invite to Duluth in mid June when she and some friends (that I know) are running Grandma’s Marathon. If I don’t see her then, I won’t until the end of July. We shall see!

Steven was so sweet sending me cat pics all weekend (he couldn’t go on the trip because of work on Friday). I missed my babies. And Steven! I guess it is good to be home! (Just not back to work. Yuck.)

Random Thoughts Thursday 176

By , April 19, 2018 8:26 am
  • Thank you for the supportive comments on my last post! My week has actually gotten worse (ha!) but I am feeling okay!
  • Data and Khaleesi finished their roundworm medication, and to make sure it worked, we had to take in poop samples to the vet to be tested. The cats have two litter boxes, but while Khali only uses one, Data uses both. Sigh. So to make sure I knew whose poop I was scooping, I was super diligent about cleaning the litter boxes every time they were used, and watching to see who did what. I felt like the Poop Police. I didn’t think that was going to work, but I got a sample I know is from both of them! I was so excited and proud of myself. Ha. It’s the small (smell?) things, right? (Still waiting to hear back from the vet on the results.) Update: the vet called and said they’re both healthy and clear of worms!

  • I finished First Ladies of Running, and am now reading The Salt Line (which I picked up at the free library in the train station), a dystopian novel set in the future, where the world is segmented in to safe “zones” away from killer ticks. Ha, great description! The story is about some people who pay to go on an adventure outside of the safe zones. The book is an uncorrected advance proof copy, and says to check the final copy before reviewing or quoting it. Interesting – I wonder if much changed!

  • Runner’s World is still pushing advice to swish a sports drink and spit it out in their latest issue. Sigh. This time though, it’s not to avoid calories, but to get you mentally going for a run, OR if you don’t like the taste of it, but want to trick your brain in to thinking more carbs are on the way. WHY DOES THIS DUMB TIP MAKE ME SO ANGRY EACH TIME I SEE IT?!
  • I bought one of the new Starbucks mugs! I wanted to get the Iowa one, and finally found a location that was not sold out (even though they said that they were at first, then decided to check while we waited for our chai lattes, and found some)! We tried to buy them in Iowa two weekends ago but every Starbucks we checked (about six of them) didn’t have any! Nuts!

One of those weeks

By , April 17, 2018 7:48 am

I was a ball of nerves listening to the Boston Marathon yesterday. I attributed the nerves to DUH, my overall wish for an American to win and for my friends running it to survive the horrible weather, but also, that I was listening to it, and didn’t have any visuals.

After Desi won (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), I went on a run, feeling strong and happy, expecting all my nerves to go away.

They didn’t.

I guess it was more than the race, after all.

It’s just one of those weeks.

  • I’m in the office today, specifically for a meeting for a client to yell at me. Yay!
  • A family member is not doing well.
  • I’m nervous about catching a flight on time on Friday.

One of those weeks where the walk to the office makes me feel especially anxious. TOO MANY PEOPLE.

These are normal every day things that people deal with, yeah, every day, but it’s just one of those weeks where my anxiety is high and says “RUN TO THE KITCHEN AND STUFF YOUR FACE TO DEAL!” Ugh.

I tried that method yesterday and it did not help. Ha. Today I am on to journaling (here) and reaching out to my snis and friends for support. I imagine THAT will work much better!!!

What month is it anyway?

By , April 16, 2018 6:25 am

For a while, I haven’t kept straight what the month or date is (somehow I’ve been fine on day of week, though). I’m not sure why that’s happening, BUT THIS BIZARRO WEATHER SURE DOESN’T HELP (says almost everyone in the US this weekend)! Crazy winds, and rain, then freezing rain, and snow. Wheeeeeeeeee! It’s April, right?!

Our pond is VERY high. Luckily, when it gets high, it floods in the woods, and not toward the house!

It was a perfect weekend for horrible weather though – we didn’t have a lot planned, and we both have slight colds, so a reason to stay home and relax was welcomed.

FRIDAY!

But! Friday night I had plans, and yay, felt well enough to go out! I took Bobbi out for an early birthday celebration. We hit up HuHot, and saw Ready Player One in 3D.

We weren’t looking for 3D tickets, but the show time that worked was in 3D so that’s what we did. I usually don’t care for 3D, but am actually glad we saw this in 3D – it was well done and added a lot to the experience! Now, I just need to find a BuzzFeed article that explains ALL the pop culture references in the movie that I missed (probably a lot).

We had a fun evening and it was great to catch up. I say this EVERY TIME I spend one-on-one time with a girlfriend, but we don’t see each other that often, and it’s a real treat when we do. It’s like a long, intense (in a good way, ha) therapy session!

And… I didn’t do much else the rest of the weekend, but you can keep reading if you want!

SATURDAY!

On Saturday morning I did my long run at the track and skipped an outdoor charity event I wanted to attend, but was worried it would make my cold worse. Ugh.

We did however, venture out later in the day for groceries, and it was still miserable, with sideways rain from high winds. That, paired with Aldi being out of a few crucial items, and my cold, made me a bit moody. Ugh.

SUNDAY!

All night Saturday, we listened to freezing rain hit the house. I woke up worried the roads would be treacherous and I’d have to cancel fitness boxing, but the roads were okay! Phew!

After class I got a pedicure, in case it’s warm in Texas this upcoming weekend, and anyone has to witness seeing my exposed toes. Ha.

We had lunch then took naps! YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

Then I ran on the treadmill. And took a bath. And helped make dinner. And did some chores.

Truly lazy day. Okay, weekend, whatever! I need them AT LEAST once a month!
