Friday Question #49

Do you save your favorite thing on your plate for last or eat it first? In essence, do you “save the best for last”?

I sure do. I eat my veggies first, then my boca burger. Even if it means it gets cold. I eat my fruit, then my pizza. Okay, I just eat my carbs last. Ha.

<image:Mindless Eating width=Brian Wansink, a food researcher of sorts, wrote about this in his book Mindless Eating. He did a study on who eats their favorite thing last, and who eats it first.

He concluded that people who ate their favorite dish first were more likely to be from large families or be the youngest child. People who ate the favorite dish last were likely the oldest or an only child.

His reasoning is that the oldest or only child had the luxury of saving their favorite dish for a reward, knowing it would still be there. The youngest, or person from a large family, ate it right away, because they were used to competition in the family growing up – they didn’t know how long it would last.

I have four siblings, and I am the second-oldest, and I still eat it last, so I guess your research isn’t correct for me buddy (although I DO understand the competition thing!). Is his research correct for you?

(In Wansink’s defense, he used this study as an example to illustrate that your childhood eating habits follow you into adulthood. I defintely agree with that!)

<image:couponsDo you use coupons?

A few weeks ago on the train, I saw a woman spend an hour organizing coupons into a little plastic box. She had all these ads out, as well as her scissors, and was cutting and filing away. I was intimidated by the amount of coupons she had – it must have been hundreds!

I don’t go out of my way to obtain coupons. If one comes in the mail that I think I’ll use, I hold on to it. I look through the Sunday coupons to see if there are any for products we already use, and I save those. But that’s about it.

But I know there are whole websites and clubs devoted to using coupons to maximize savings. I know for some it is a hobby! Are any of you in that group?

When you were in high school did you eat dinner with your family or on your own?

I was thinking about this the other day. About midway through my freshman year, around the time I started theater, I began eating dinner on my own or with friends. Then I started working at McDonald’s the following summer, and I think I ate dinner there EVERY night I worked. I became a manager after working for a year, and then I got FREE McDonald’s food every day I worked. Ha!

I remember I used to go to soccer practice or theater or WHATEVER after school and then go to work to do the closing shift. I would eat french fries, ice cream, tortillas with cheese, cookie dough, shakes… basically whatever I wanted, all night long. Wow. I can’t believe I didn’t turn into a blimp!

I don’t remember ever eating diner with my family on a school night during high school. But it was just because I was busy and doing my own thing. Is this typical?

<image:socksWhen you take your socks off, do you always use your hands to do it, or do you ever your feet?

Yes! Another foot-related question! Let me explain.

On Sunday night, I went to bed with my socks on because I was so cold. I rarely do this because I always end up with them off anyway. I asked Steven what percentage chance he thought that I would still have my socks on when I woke up (he thought 2%).

Then he asked me, “Do you get up in the middle of the night to take them off?”

“No! I use my feet to take them off while I am sleeping!”

“Who uses their feet to take their socks off?!”

“Everyone!”

“No they don’t!”

You get the idea. I had to demonstrate to Steven how it is done (you can either stand with one foot on the floor and use the other to stand on its sock from the front and pull the foot away so the sock comes off OR, if you are talented like me, you can bend your toes and use them to hold the back of the socks while you pull the other foot out). Then he continued to tell me that everyone uses their hands to remove their socks and I am just strange. So that is where the question came from!

(And they WERE still on when I woke up!)

<image:Tying shoesDo you tie and untie your tennis shoes when you take them on and off? Or do you tie them once, leave them tied, then slip them on and off?

Every morning, I slip on my loose, but already-tied Sauconys. Why am I too lazy to untie them when I get home in the evening, and re-tie them in the morning? I don’t know.

I handle my running shoes with a little more care – I do tie and untie those. I guess I think that is better on them? That it will keep them lasting longer? Who knows.

Do you answer the phone if you don’t recognize the number on the caller ID? Do you have a land line phone?

I’ve gotten into the bad habit of not answering my phone unless I know who is calling me, and I want to talk to them. How awful is that? I think it has been heightened by all of the stupid political calls I’ve been getting lately. I have to remember though, my friend who lives in Rome often calls from an “Unknown” number. I would hate to miss her call.

We don’t have a land line. Just our two cell phones. A statistic from this year says that nearly 1/5 of homes only have cell phones!

Do you plan on handing out treats to trick-or-treaters for Halloween this year? What kind of treats will you hand out?

Our town is kind of goofy. It seems they always have the trick-or-treating on the Sunday before Halloween, which means it will be this Sunday, October 26th. Seems kind of early.

We handed out candy last year, and it was such a bust. It was almost like we had to do the work to get the trick-or-treaters to come to us. I was disappointed. It was my first year handing out treats in “my own” home.

I haven’t asked Steven if he wants to hand out treats this year, and I am guessing he will say no. But, if we do decide, for some reason, I would like to hand out those little packs of animal crackers. They’re only 60 calories each, and would make a good “snack” for me if we had leftovers!

<image:Profession UniformDoes your profession have a clothing stereotype?

Mine does – lots of gray, black and muted colors. I think I wore the gray/black combo three times this week! To the left is one of my typical “uniforms.”

I have a confession – Steven helps me pick out most of my outfits when I have meetings with clients, interviews, etc. The other day, he advised I take this top, because it is “designer-y.” He told me I looked “architect-y” when I wore the outfit on the left yesterday.

I told Steven he should be on that show, What Not to Wear. As a host, not as a “walking fashion disaster” (that’s what their website says!).

<image: PillsDo you take any vitamins or supplements? Which do you take? Do you notice any difference in your overall health from taking them?

Steven and I both take Centrum Multivitamin in the morning. I honestly don’t feel like it does anything. Anything that I notice. But it makes me feel better that it might be “filling in the cracks” with the nutrients I might be missing in my diet.

I’ve taken iron supplements before. After insistence from my mother. But honestly? It is really easy for vegetarians to get the nutrients they need in non-meat based foods. Well, it’s easy if you’re conscious of it!

What benefit do you wish your company offered?

Dental Care.

Although if I had it, I am not sure if I would use it. I am STILL trying to figure out how to use my health insurance. How sad is that? I am lucky enough to have it, but have no idea how to use it.
