By , October 10, 2008 10:18 pm

When I went to respond to all of today’s comments, I noticed that all of the posts had comments disabled. Then, I noticed all my settings were messed up. Somehow, comments got turned off. Maybe on all my posts. I found this thread talking about it. Anyone else having this issue? Ugh. What a pain in the butt this is going to be.

Update: the SQL command in the post I linked to worked! It turned ALL of my comments back on. But I just wasted an hour figuring it out.

Friday Question #36

By , August 29, 2008 5:49 am

Why do you blog, or, why do you read blogs?

Beth just wrote a “Why I Blog” post (I love it when people write on this topic!). It reminded me of a post I wrote about the same topic a long time ago, but with a somewhat different answer.

Like Beth, I do blog to meet new people. That is one of the biggest perks! I love “knowing” people from all over the country, and even getting to meet some of them.

But that is not solely why I blog. It started as a way to keep in touch with friends and family, but now it’s more than that, at least for me.

Now it’s a place for my voice. It’s a place for me to say whatever the hell I want and not have to think twice about it OR worry about being interrupted. I waste so much time in the real world trying not to offend people OR letting them do all the talking, I feel like I should have one place where I can just be myself.

I just have to keep remembering that.

Fruit Cup

By , August 21, 2008 1:09 pm

We have monthly “birthday celebrations” in my office during the months that the staff has birthdays. The company orders treats and we all sit around in the conference room, chatting for about 30 minutes (or more!) while enjoying the treats. It’s actually a nice break, to just sit and chat with everyone. I think of it as a morale booster.

Sometimes the company orders individual treats, like drinks from Starbucks (bleh), and sometimes they order one big thing, like a coffee cake.

You may recall that I am on a “healthy lifestyle” quest. Whenever they order individual treats, I try to order something healthy or low in calories, like a fruit cup or a diet soda.

Today was the August celebration (duh) and our receptionist/secretary/all-star came up to me and said, “I’m going to order that cinnamon-cake thing from Corner Bakery. Do you want a fruit cup, since you are so being so good [healthy-eating wise]?”

She didn’t say it meanly – she was being nice. She noticed I’ve been watching what I eat, and actually asked me if I wanted an alternate item for the birthday celebration. I thought it was very nice that she provided that option for me, because some people are actually pretty mean when you are eating healthy. They become “food pushers” who want you to eat what they are eating or what they are making. I’m happy no one in my office is like that.

But damn, that cake smelled good when I was sitting there eating my fruit cup!

And a little bit of housekeeping… called “How I Blog.” Continue reading 'Fruit Cup'»

Weekend Recap

By , August 17, 2008 8:11 pm

Although Steven and I didn’t do anything productive in the true sense of the word this weekend, we did:

  • Purchase tickets for the two of us and my parents to see Robin Williams at the Chicago Theater on September 27. (I HATE TICKETMASTER. I had four seats together, then it wouldn’t recognize my password, so I lost the seats. Now we are not sitting together. Sad face.)
  • Exercise! We went jogging on Saturday, and will go jogging again tonight. I’ve gone jogging everyday this week except for Friday!
  • See Tropic Thunder. It’s true, Robert Downey Jr.’s performance is brilliant. It was a bit drug out, but still really funny. And although the “retard” bit was a bit offensive, I don’t think it was that bad. I honestly wouldn’t have thought too much of it if I hadn’t heard about all the controversy before hand.
  • Locate and purchase a copy of Mario Kart for the wii. Now Steven can be happy. I hope.
  • And… meet up with Felicia (and a friend) from Confessions of a geeky blogger! We met for lunch at Rock Bottom Brewery and had an awesome time. Felicia is one of those girls you like right away – 100% friendly, open and lots of fun! And I love her voice! Is it weird to say that? She just comes off as a warm and true-to-themselves person. If that makes sense. I’m so happy I got to meet up with her! I hope her friend wasn’t too bored with us – but I doubt it, she was just as cool as Felicia.

Treadmills: They’re not just for cats with glowing eyes anymore!

Thanks for the lolcat, Christina

Coincidentally, my infrequent posting corresponds directly to the increase of daily exercise in my life.

Instead of my usual evening routine of eating dinner then lounging somewhere with my computer, I am now eating dinner, exercising, taking a shower… and maybe turning my computer on to check my email.

But it’s more than that. My “quietness” seems to have seeped into real life as well. People I see every day are asking me “Is something wrong?” “Is everything okay?” “Why have you been so quiet lately?”

Nothing’s wrong. Everything is okay, and actually, I feel happy! But I don’t know why I’ve felt so quiet lately. All I know is, I don’t quite feel like myself.

If that makes any sense.

How I love thee, firefox

Is anyone else using wordpress (and sitemeter?) getting a lovely error message like this when the open their site in Internet Explorer?

<image: Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet Site ilaxstudio.com/blog Operation Aborted Error>

Well, I am.

Most of you come from a reader, so you may not notice the problem, but I am going to see what I can do to fix it.

(Or you could just use mozilla firefox. Go ahead, download it!)

Tres años

By , July 21, 2008 5:32 am

Today is my three-year blogging anniversary! You can’t really tell by looking at the (drop-down) archives in my sidebar, but I have, in fact, been blogging since July 21, 2005 (just not on wordpress). Crazy!

What would a blogging anniversary be if I didn’t talk about blogging?

One of my favorite parts about blogging is the comments (duh). I am amazed at the amount of feedback I get… and always amazed that it is never quite what I expect!

I don’t know about you, but when I write a post, I have an idea in my head of who will respond, how many responses I will get, what people will say… blah blah blah.

I’m never right! And for some reason, it really surprise me, every time.

This is coming off pretty lame, but what I’m trying to say is, that I love the diverse amount of feedback I get, and all the cool bloggers I meet. So thanks for coming by (even if you don’t say anything).

Here’s to another year.

People you don’t even know?!

By , July 8, 2008 11:52 pm

Isn’t it funny trying to explain blogging and blogger-meetups to a non-blogger?

I got into this conversation with my boss tonight, when I told him I was going to meet Beth and Kevin. (He saw I was looking at Beth’s site, then asked what the heck I was looking at (her pictures from an American Girl Store visit), so I went on to tell him this was her blog, and I was meeting her tonight, and blah blah blah.)

He actually sounded interested, and told me to have a good time when I left.

I’m happy he didn’t ask, “Now, why would you want to meet up with people you don’t even know?” I’ve heard that’s a common non-blogger response.

Why does anyone meet up with people they don’t know? To try to create new friendships? That is always my hope. I think it probably worked tonight. We had a great time!

It feels like it should be Saturday

By , July 6, 2008 10:34 pm

I still have nothing nice to say.

I skipped blogging for a whole week, because every thought entering my head that I deemed “blog-worthy” could also have been labeled “negative,” “whiny,” or “bitter.”

Ugh. I’ve just been feeling so on edge, like I have all this built up tension… over what? I don’t know what.

I really looked forward to the three-day weekend, and the mini-vacation with my family. And I had a great time, but don’t feel relaxed like I thought I would. I still feel jumpy. And anxious. And even… hostile?

This is really something I want to get away from. I just don’t know how.

Now you see me, now you don’t

One of the things I love about my job is that I get to go into all these neat buildings in Chicago. It’s great to see all the different architectural styles… but what I really love are the amazing views.

Can you imagine this being the view from your office?

<image: view of Lake Michigan>

It’s really fun to think about what people will see from their workspace. I think it really affects the way you work. I know I really enjoy working in an open office, with full height windows on two complete sides. We don’t have a cool view of the lake or anything though. You can see the Sears Tower… but only when you go stand in one corner!

<image: building I work in in Chicago>

What’s your workspace like (whether at work, or your office at home)? Do you think it’s important to have sunlight and a view? Or do you not care either way?

Side Note I: I saw this parked in front of the Board of Trade yesterday. I want.

<image: beautiful Lamborghini in Chicago!>

Side Note II: I’m having a really hard time staying caught up with blogs, leaving comments, responding to comments, writing anything worthwhile here, and responding to emails lately. My apologies. Please don’t take it personally. I am trying to catch up, but can’t find the time (it’s all that GD bowling!).
