Stepping up to Wellness 10K Walk

By , May 23, 2010 3:51 pm

There won’t be a training post this week – I took the last four days off to take care of my legs (so there is not much to say!).

I also took some time off this week so that I could run the Stepping up to Wellness 10K with Tori today in Libertyville, IL.

Before the race

I am in the pink and Tori is in the blue

I was pretty nervous about this race all week. I tried to run each day, but would take a step and feel like my legs were made of jello. Yikes! I woke up early this morning and iced them. I know you aren’t supposed to do that before a run, but that was the only thing that was making me feel better!

Tori and I ran a bit before the race to warm up and my legs felt so much better! Not 100% – I still had a slight ache under my left knee, but nothing that told me “don’t run.” After I ran, I stretched and we took off!

At the start

At the beginning…

Did I mention it was at least 70° and the sun was blaring? We were hot just walking to the race start! I knew I would have to slow down because of the sun (and from coming back from an injury).

We ran the first 9/10ths of a mile, then we stopped to walk and take a break at the first water stop. Tori was having major stomach cramps – something she was worried would happen – and they did not get better for the rest of the run. She was also feeling very dizzy and achy.

So, we walked! I didn’t mind at all, since my legs were sore all week, and since it was so freaking hot. We walked then fake ran a pose for Steven at the 2.75 mile marker.

Fake running

Ha ha. Steven walked with us for about two miles, then went back to the finish line. We walked our way to the end, finishing just under an hour an a half.

I know Tori was really upset that she was feeling too ill to run, but I didn’t care at all (regarding the pace – I felt bad that she was so ill). I kept telling her how I spent the entire last week in my head, worried that I would never run again (I know, how productive) so the fact that we ran AT ALL and I felt good made me feel so happy!

And I had fun just walking and talking (and sweating). Now, I just hope she can figure out the morning running/stomach thing soon so she feels better!

(Another reason I didn’t mind walking – I am in DC all week, and one of the things that upset me when I was here last time was that I couldn’t run. So, I think it is better I took it easy on the day my flight left! I know I will get to run in DC now.)

Glad you had a fun time, and enjoy DC!

Hope your legs feel much much better – these things can come and go – hopefully gone when you need it to be!

  2. Erin says:

Yay for some running! I agree, it’s probably good that you walked, too. The sun, heat, and humidity today was brutal and now you’ll be fully able to run in DC!!

  3. Mica says:

Yikes! It sounds like you and Tori are real troopers for getting through a HOT 10K with illness and sore legs between you!

Have a great time running in D.C. I’ve never done that, but I’m sure you’ll find some cool places!

  4. I LOVE your smile in that picture!

  5. I’m glad the run went well! Running in the heat is a whole different experience (a.k.a it sucks lol)

Enjoy DC!! Close to where I’m from 😀

I’m so glad to know that people walk in “races.” I’ve been SO intimidated that I was afraid to even try. I’m gonna do it.

  7. Kristina says:

I’m so sorry that you’ve been struggling with physical ailments. That can be so frustrating! I hope that time and rest will let you heal. And enjoy DC!

Have a great time in D.C! And your race still sounds like a good time. Sometimes walking can give you a different appreciation of the race – and you guys are troopers for sticking it out. It’s a lot harder to stay in the game with discomfort, then to quit. So good for you ladies! 🙂

Have a good time running in DC! You should shoot me an email. I will be running in the city at lunch today and probably at least two other days this week.

Hi K! I am running Wednesday evening with Carla, and cannot leave training to run during lunch. I was thinking about running Friday before training (early… like 4:30 or 5:00)… do you ever run that early?

  10. Have fun in DC- there is so much to do. I live about 2 hours from there and I love taking day trips!

Walking in a race is A-OK with me 🙂

  11. The weather this weekend was so bizarre. Entirely too hot and too humid for this time of year! Sorry it took a bite out of your running, but I’m also glad to hear you had a positive attitude about it. Plus, you got to spend time with Tori. Lucky you!

  12. Carla says:

I’ve walked on a 10k before too when I just wasn’t feeling it, and I didn’t care about my time. I’m glad I did, because my time never got registered anyway and I would have been livid if I had gone all out! (None of my friends time got registered on that race either, it was so poorly organized…)

    Yay for running in DC!

  13. it is okay to walk! what a great race and it looks like you had fun !

  14. YaY!! I’m so glad to hear that your legs are feeling much better. Perhaps they just needed a rest. And running in the heat? Sucks balls. True statement. I can’t stand it either.

  15. Ameena says:

I’m glad your legs are doing better…and I’m glad you gave them a rest too! I’m sure thats what they needed.

Have a great time in DC. I love that beautiful city!

  16. BostonRunner says:

I hate running in the heat. It really completely changes running and I’m not so good at adapting to it. I’ve been having trouble with side cramps lately, and think it might be from the heat.. do you know what the cause of your friend’s cramps were?

  17. Alice says:

haha the fake running looks very convincing 🙂 eeesh hope your legs are better and you can get in some runs while you’re here! i have officially Given Up on running, as i have bowed to my body’s repeated indications that it is Not Built For Running. alas.

  18. Erin says:

I forgot you were here this week! have a great time and enjoy all the scenery and running around. Its such a great running city!

  19. Anne says:

Love the fake running disclosure 🙂
Good job getting through it and I’m glad you were able to run a bit. I hope Toni figures out what’s going on with her stomach…not fun.
Have a great time in DC.

  20. Holly says:

Yay!! I’m so glad you were able to finish your race, AND that you’ll be able to run in DC. Hope your legs feel okay!
