Hiding spots for pets
I think Data wants a bath…
… okay, maybe not!
What is your pet’s favorite “hiding spot”? What strange places do they get in to?
Back when Steven and I were doing the long-distance thing (me in Iowa, him in Illinois) we used to talk to each other on the phone while we were getting ready each morning.
One day when we were chatting, Steven was about to leave the house when he realized he hadn’t seen Data in awhile. Normally, Data is his little shadow, so it was a bit strange that he wasn’t there, acting as a tripping hazard. Of course, I started to panic, asking Steven if he had opened the garage door and let Data out, if Data accidentally got trapped in the coat closet (a favorite place of Data’s to hide) when Steven grabbed his jacket, or if nazis kidnapped him, etc. Steven looked all over downstairs and couldn’t find him.
So I’m 400 miles away, hyperventilating because I am convinced Data somehow escaped the house and got hit by a car. Steven decides to retrace his steps from the morning, checking the bedroom, closet, and bathroom upstairs.
Steven looks in the bathroom, no visible Data. Checks behind the shower curtain, no visible Data. He thinks about his morning routine, washing his face, brushing his teeth, using mouthwash… “wait a second,” he says (we are still on the phone), “I wonder if Data got into the cabinets when I got my mouth wash out this morning!”
Sure enough, Data was sitting in the cabinet under the sink, like it was no big deal (he must have been there for at least 15 minutes). Steven opened the cabinet door, and Data gave it a second or two (coupled with a few glances of boredom) before he walked out.
Now we always check the cabinets before we leave the bathroom.
Steven, I am sure I told parts of this story wrong, so you can correct me if you want!
How cute! My cats were always kept in the basement and they went outdoors so they would have lots of funny hiding spaces. Often I would look out the window and see my cat halfway up a tree chasing a bird or another animal!
I’ve heard about some of the odd places cats enjoy getting into. It’s so funny.
Fortunately, Shane is much too big to lose and if he ever did get trapped in a closet (which would have to be a coat closet),the entire neighborhood would hear about it.
Awww, Data is so cute! My little dog loves to hide under the covers…we always crack up when we see a big lump in the middle of the bed π
Ha! Now that doesn’t seem like a very good hiding spot!
If I saw a big lump in the bed like that I would want to go hug it!
I love this whole story, especially “nazis kidnapped him” Ha! I am literally laughing out loud about that. I am so much like you. One time we had a hole in the wall and I had myself positively convinced that my husband hit his head on the wall hard enough to smash through it and the reason he wasn’t calling to let me know was because he was lying in a ditch somewhere passed out because he smashed it so hard and didn’t realize until he was already driving. I was mostly kidding around but a tiny part of me was worried.
My husband has a habit of closing the doors on closets when Maya is in there. The kids and I are often running around trying to figure out where she is and then we hear her whine a bit when we are calling her.
Data is adorable! What great pictures!
My Jack Russell Terrier likes to sleep under the covers in the bed when we are away. She sleeps in my son’s bed in the daytime and my bed at night, but always under the covers.
That’s cute! Sadie likes to hid behind the couch.. she is very skinny so she can fit herself behind it very easily. Sometimes she goes upstairs in the guest bedroom behind the bed… and I can and scream.. but the minute I open the fridge and take out some lettuce and say who wants lettuce she comes out of her hiding spot. Raymond thinks I am turning Sadie into a vegetarian.. lol
Cats are so funny! Bodger doesn’t have any hiding spaces because he loves to be with us and also, he doesn’t fit a lot of places. That said, he loves to sit behind me in the computer chair and try to push me out.
Ha ha. Data totally does that too. Or he waits until you get up to grab something, then takes your seat! Sneaky bastard!
So cute…everytime I hear your cat’s name I just crack up. Ali would be so proud!
We don’t have pets unless you count Maya’s fish Hello and Kitty. They don’t have too much room to hide!
Well… fish can’t really get into many hiding places!! π
I’m curious how you came to call your cat “Data.” It’s cute, but an interesting name for a cat!
<3 <3
Steven named Data after the character Data from Star Trek Next Generation… dorky, right? π
Manny has def put me through the same situation a couple of times. He is able to cram his body into the tiniest of places. His standard hiding spot is under the bed. He has a few blankets under there and a mouse toy. We call it his house. : )
Aww, Data is so cute! My cat hides in the shower, the closet, and under the covers. It is so funny though since when he goes under the covers, he usually parks himself in between the pillows, so we can’t even tell he’s there. Cutest thing ever!
Cute! Let’s see…Yukon my lab, is too big to hide unnoticed but, she likes to look out the window so sometimes she is covered by the curtains and all you see are legs and a tail. Rosie my chierrier (terrier/Chihuahua mix likes to hid under the chopping block or under our covers (both in our bed and under our couch throws. Chaplin, our cat, hides om our office chairs or sometimes in Rosie’s crate.
I have been known to shut him in the bathroom because he sneaks in.
Our pooches don’t really hide. If they aren’t glued to me, they’re either laying in a patch of sunshine or they’re laying in the tent we bought them at IKEA.
Aw, Data’s too funny. I think cats are much better at hiding than dogs are – it seems that my little 60lb bundle of joy is always in a pretty regular spot, within 10 feet of either of us.
LOL – that’s adorable! Barkley is a little too big to hide anywhere (he’s 50 lbs. and we live in a small 1BR apartment!), but when we come home from work it’s always pretty clear where he’s been hanging out during the day. The bath mat will be smushed into one corner, our bed will look like a bomb went off on it, and all the throw pillows on the couch will be on the floor π I think it is hysterical!
Ha! It’s so funny when you can see their path of travel during the day! One time, we had accidentally left the guest bathroom door open, and when we came home the bath mat was all smushed and it had a pile of q-tips underneath it!
Awww! Adorable. Cats are so funny with their stealthy behaviors. π
my weirdo cat, oliver, gets into ALL SORTS of places like that. i’ve left the house with him trapped in the coat closet, in my room closet, in kitchen cabinets, under my roommate’s sink, you name it. you’d think he’d learn, but apparently not π
We keep the door to our bathroom closed because any time we open it, the cats leap into the bath tub. They’re known to nap in there. Our cats also love the kitchen cabinets. I found one in there, curled up with our rolls of paper towels. I love cats. They’re just so hilarious.
Data sounds so cute! We don’t have any pets except fish, but let me tell you that our fish have personality to spare! The cichlid has a major anger management problem and our koi and (insanely large) goldfish — who started as a feeder fish and never got eaten — are total BFFs. I love it! We also used to have a silver dollar who thought he was a cichlid and tried to mate with the ladies. π
We once found Eleanor in the bathtub too. Very funny.
I got your info, and will be putting the card in the mail first thing tomorrow morning! π My new shoes are Nike Lunar Racers. They’re racing flats. They are SO lightweight, that they almost feel like paper and cardboard! LOL! I can’t wait to try them out!
I love our cats π
One time Shasta managed to get inside the dishwasher WHILE I WAS LOADING IT without me noticing. If I had been able to shut it (she made the bottom shelf stick out a little too much) I would have started it with her in there! That was probably the funniest one, but she also loves to walk into the fridge when there is room in it, and she has remained in there with the door shut for over 5 minutes and been as calm as a… well, calm when we opened it back up. So weird.
Oh gosh. Every once in awhile, Data gets into the dishwasher too (of course we had to take a pic!). What is it with cats… they see theses small places and they just HAVE to see if they fit!
Lexi is kind of too big to hide. My sisters cat once hid behind the trashcan though (it’s a pull out trashcan cabinet kind of thing). This morning I was freaking out because I couldn’t find my aunt’s dog! She was hiding inside this little pillow she has!
That is such a cute story about Data! π
Love this story! My old rottie I had would “hide” in the bathtub or shower when he got hot. I guess the tile was cool on his belly. Oh how I miss him!
My cat likes the oddest places, too, mostly that on top of anything that is uncomfortable: papers, backpacks, my laptop…
I am from Davenport and went to college and UNI so we were neighbors at one point :). I love finding new Iowans, we’ve a special connection!!
Thanks for stopping by Jill! Data always likes to lay on my lap whenever I want to use my computer. Sigh!
My sister is at UNI right now π
what a punk! my cat gave me such a scare when he was a kitten, he hid in the linen closet while i panicked, convinced he had gotten out of the house and was lost forever. he actually likes the water in the shower, always tries to get in…such a perve!
We always tease Data for being a perve and hanging out when we use the shower (or when I got to the bathroom!).
Thats so cute!! My cat used to lay in this old trunk we had under the sundeck. It was covered in crap, but he always found a spot. Thats actually where my mom found him when he was dying (neighbor fed him antifreeze). He loved it there.
Lexie on the other hand doesnt hide anywhere because shes such an attention whore. But she will twist herself into whatever position it takes to fit onto my lap. Doesnt matter how Im sitting, she’ll find a way. I let her because I think its cute.
Oh gosh. I really wish I didn’t know that your neighbor fed your cat antifreeze. I don’t think I am going to be able to forget that. I hope… you turned your neighbor into the cops or something.
Haha! That’s such a cute cat story π
Yoda is so tiny that he’s able to hide behind the stove. It drives me crazy because there’s no way for me to get him out once he’s back there, but I figure in a month he won’t be able to fit.
When Mavado was still little he would hide/sleep in my underwear drawer. The drawer is in a cabinet and has a three inch gap at the top instead of handles for opening and he would squeeze himself in. Out of the six drawers he had to choose from, he always picked my underwear drawer. Such a boy π
Cats are so great at finding cool places to hang out. My dog is too dumb to find a place to hide. Even when she is scared, she just runs around with her tail between her legs in a frenzy … doesnt think about finding a “safe place”.
I can totally feel your panic! I’ve had that exact same feeling quite a few times since we’ve had dogs.
When you have dogs who weight 50+ pounds it’s difficult for them to really hide. But they can find funny places to lay down. Trinka Deu cracks us up because sometimes she’ll lay with her head under the bedskirt of our bed. We call her the headless dog. Ashley used to love to lay down on top of the air conditioning vent in our old bedroom and our old living room. Except the tags on her collar would get stuck in the grate. Sometimes she’d manage to get up and the grate would be dangling off her collar. Other times she’d be stuck there crying until we unstuck her tags. It would be both sad and hilarious at the same time.
Oh gosh! I would be laughing SO HARD if I saw a dog with a vent grate on their collar!
Do you have a pic of the headless dog? π
Data loves to lay on the vents during the winter. One of them is under a cabinet (pic here). Sometimes he lays so far underneath it we don’t know where he is!
Unfortunately we don’t have any pets but my parent’s cat loves hiding in super small places, preferably boxes. π
Your story is cute though I understand your worry. Cats are so adoreable and so egoistic. Our cat often ignores us when we call his name but we always HAVE to give in when he wants to cuddle or is hungry. π
Aww…Data is adorable.
My black lab used to play hide and seek with me, where *I’d* be the one hiding and he’d have to find me. He went crazy and loved the game. π
He never really “hid” but he did like to get away once in a while by going into his crate and taking a nap with his favorite stuffed bear (the only one he never destroyed.) I swear he thought he was human. π
Our cats get into everything – so they get accidentally shut into everything too – bathroom cupboards, closets, you name it. They also love to hide under the bed and pounce on our feet when we pass by.
I think cats and small dogs are more likely to hide than big dogs. Our dog follows us around (me in particular) wherever we go. There is no hiding. She doesn’t want us to forget her.
Strange, under the sink is the exact spot that I try to hide from my wife every so often!
Did I ever tell you about the time we found Beatrice curled up in a colander in the kitchen cupboard? She was just a tiny kitten then. That was shortly after we learned that she loves to hide…the first time she did it she was in the back of a dresser and I completely freaked out thinking she’d gotten out.
I honestly don’t know where she hides half the time now. I joke about her going through her kitty portal to another dimension!
She is like Coraline! Do you think the “other Diane” has button eyes? π I hope you got pics of her in that colander! Too cute!
The same thing happened to me and my husband the other day, except the cat had hopped into my sock drawer when I was getting dressed and crawled into the back, I went to work and 2 hours later, my husband thought that she had gotten outside and was in the alley beside our building because he could hear her. But she was still chilling in the drawer that happens to be right next to the window that faces the alley….
She also likes trying to get into the fridge when it’s open. Pets are so silly.
Ha ha ha. Was she happy in the drawer or meowing that she wanted out? Cats are so silly. Data likes to see what is in the fridge too and LOVES it when the ice maker turns on. What dorks!
Thanks for commenting, I love meeting new bloggers!
I think she was coo-ing because she was sleeping and warm and happy, she’s so weird.
My cats both love hiding! I guess its how they keep themselves entertained. LOL.
Those are great photos of Data.
Our cat Rocko, back when he was spry enough, used to jump up into the unfinished part of our laundry room and lay on top of a 2×4 board. It was obvious he couldn’t fit, but unless you were looking for him, you couldn’t see him.
That’s hilarious. I also like your cat’s name. π
My basset hound, Delilah, has been known to hide under my bed occasionally. I don’t think she can get under there right now due to boxes and whatnot, but she learned from the cat that she could get under there and I couldn’t find her one day (in my tiny 2 bedroom apartment!) and sure enough, she was under my bed. She army crawls and somehow turns herself around back in the corner and then army crawls back out.
