Leggings? Seriously?!

By , September 6, 2009 8:06 am

How ironic. When I was walking on the UIC campus on Thursday, every other girl I saw was wearing leggings. I thought, “Leggings are in? Seriously?!” I made a mental note to ask my sister (and promptly forgot).

Today, I was randomly flipping through the October issue of Glamour and saw this:

We Love Leggings Article in Glamour

Glamour’s “We Love Leggings” article.

A 6-page article about leggings and how to wear them!

Whoa. I would not be caught dead in leggings. The closest thing I am getting to leggings is some too-tight yoga pants. And that’s not to say leggings aren’t cute or stylish. They sure are. I mean, celebs almost make it look like mere mortals can pull off the look:

Celebrities in leggings

Celebs in leggings.

I just know… that I cannot. But I appreciate all the women who can! Are you going to wear leggings this year? (poll below!)

Wow the rest of the country is picking up on it? It was a HUGE fashion icon of 2007-2008 here in my DAUGHTER’s age group (she’s eleven now). Kids were wearing them under shorts and mini-skirts (so they could get away with wearing them at school). Now the adults have taken a kids’ fashion as their own. That’s a bit awkward. It reminds me of spandex. No thank you!

I love them, but ONLY paired with something ass-covering and boots.

    ONLY.

Yeah, I feel like I was seeing this last year too, but maybe I just have friends who are a bit more fashion-forward than me. 😉 I have seen it look really cute with a tunic or short dress and a little pair of flats, which is the only way I would even try, but honestly I can’t think of anywhere I would go in an outfit like that to make it worth the purchase!

Oh sweetheart, PULEEZE. Leggings have been in for like 2 or 3 years now. Isn’t it terrible? Although…a weird part of me wishes I had some, just for those comfy hang-out-around-the-house days. I tried some on one day and they were surprisingly comfortable. Hmmm.

I’ve noticed leggins were in for awhile, too, and I live in the Boonies. My Wal-mart has an end shelf full of leggings. Sadly, none my size.

I am old enough to have been an adult during the last time that leggings were in. I wore them with long sweaters. I loved them. They are comfy. You have to have a shirt long enough to cover your butt, though, otherwise you look a bit–well, I’ll say cheap. lol

I would totally buy them and wear them around the house if they were in my size. I would definitely work out in them if they had a few ounces of cotton. I would not, however, wear them out of the house at my current size, though. lol

Confession: I do have a pair of leggings…and I love them. HowEVER, the one condition I have to wear them is I have to wear a short dress or long tunic with them. Gotta cover my arse! I thought it was weird when they came back (they were “in” when I was in junior high), but they are pretty comfy. Plus, a lot cheaper than pants!

I just want the skinny jeans to go away.

Seriously? I thought leggings were in three seasons ago? Did they have a brief fade in popularity and now come back with a vengeance?

I’m disappointed, Kim. I thought we were going to be leggings triplets (Harrison, too!) on Friday. Just imagine: trotting up and down the Mag Mile with our hip leggings-clad getaway sticks? Um, what is not to love about that mental image?

  8. Jen says:

I saw a Clinton Kelley post about them on twitter: basically, if you can get away with skinny jeans, you can wear leggings. Neither is particularly flattering on me since I have heavyish thighs. I’ve always wanted the stalky legs that models have, but no dice.

I wore them a lot in the 80s. Now I would only wear them to the gym.

I’ve got leggings, I’m actually wearing a pair today. I wear them with dresses that I feel like are just a little too short. I have a super cute white babydoll style dress that just feels a little “breezy” without leggings, so I throw on a pair of white ones with it, and then I don’t worry that a gust of wind will expose me to the world haha!
I don’t wear them with much else – I don’t do the tunic style tops – my legs definitely aren’t stalky enough for that haha!

I’ve been wearing “leggings” aka spandex for years! Awesome for winter running…with no shorts on top! I never understood that, but to each their own.

I think leggings look kind of funny on me, but I have tried them on before! I might give them a go, but I’m probably not stylish enough to actually pull them off…

Yeah, I saw the email about the Wisconsin Marathon…I would totally do it again (since it was a great course and awesome weather!), but I might try for 50 states…or something. And it’s not nearly has convenient as last year!

I actually love the leggings look if done correctly (ie, not as pants) but don’t really go anywhere to wear them so I won’t be buying any. All I wear is business casual work clothes and running clothes these days.

I wear them under a skirt and usually with Uggs…never, ever alone just as pants!!! EEK!

  13. I have some longish shirts (that are actually DRESSES for stick figures) that I would totally wear with some leggings…dark leggings make the lower half of my legs look good-ish!

My oldest has been wearing leggings almost every day this school year. She is in 6th grade and I guess it is in. I myself would most likely not wear them unless it was under a dress or something. I didn’t love the leggings the first time and I don’t think I want to do it this time either! But they do look super cute on my daughter and her friends.
