First time

By , December 28, 2015 3:52 pm

This is our first time living somewhere where we are responsible for snow removal. In fact, we didn’t even own a proper shovel until Saturday night. Ha! Luckily, we looked ahead at the forecast and thought to get one before we needed it.

That was some HEAVY snow.

I definitely got a shoulder workout in, which is good, since we are canceling strength class for tonight due to road conditions.

Here’s part of the driveway at the house we are hoping to buy. I’ve indicated where the street is with a red arrow. Yeah. Won’t be shoveling all THAT! Buah ha ha.

It’s a heck of a workout!! My HOA does snow removal but not always promptly, so I end up out there sometimes anyway. I always forget how tough it is!

Ours was always so good about getting it done right away! I guess I didn’t realize how lucky we were (you are the second person who’s mentioned an HOA slow with snow removal to me)!

I don’t mean to complain – I grew up in a house without one so the fact they do it at all is fantastic! Sometimes though we just need it done to get the kids safely out of the house, so we have to do it ourselves. It’s not frequent but it happens. I’m still happy!

        • kilax says:

Don’t worry, I didn’t see it as complaining 😉 If I lived in a place like that I think there’d be situations where I’d have to do it too… and wish that they had been there earlier, lol!!!

Oh good – didn’t want to sound whiny! It’s definitely something I am grateful for…also not having to mow my own lawn! The downside is, with the way things are set up we don’t have our own yard, but not having to mow so far has made up for that 🙂

  2. Erin says:

Oh man! I do not miss having to do all of that 🙂 If/when you end up that far from the road in the woods do you guys think you’ll pay someone to plow the lane for you?

  3. karen says:

Oh wow! Shoveling is a great work out, but reading this i just realized you will be shoveling, mowing, leaf bagging…..ahhh, all the things I am trying to get out of lol

    • kilax says:

Yeah! All those things! But it will be so nice to finally own our yard and not have many neighbors… we’re okay with doing the work. Just need to procure the tools!

  4. Anne says:

    Whoa, that’s quite a driveway!

I used to have to shovel when I lived in the city – don’t really miss it now that the HOA takes care of it! Although they take their time with all of that. They were plowing and shoveling at 10pm last night, long after the snow ended (and after our last dog walk of the night, ha!).

Snow removal and lawn maintenance are my least favorite parts of owning a home! One year, I was living in a group house with friends and we had not thought ahead about needing a shovel. We ended up having to go out there and shovel with mixing bowls.

I think it’s time to hire someone to remove snow if you move to the house w/ the long lane! 😀 I actually don’t mind shoveling, as it’s a good workout, but our driveway is not big. I’d not be shoveling that long wooded drive!

  7. Shoveling snow is no joke! I used to have to do it as a child when I lived with my parents. It’s quite a workout on the arms and back. Snowblowers are one of the best inventions, ever. It’s also times like these when I appreciate paying homeowners dues for someone else to take care of the shoveling where I live. =)

I don’t know why I am only feeling it in my shoulders and not my back! Steven asked me if my back hurt! It didn’t yesterday and doesn’t today (had to shovel during lunch break). Let’s just assume I am really strong. HA!!!!!

Yeah! I think that might be one of the only things HOAs are good for (ha! JK, there must be a decent HOA out there somewhere).

  8. Michelle says:

WOW, I thought our driveway was long!!! You’ll definitely need a plow/tractor for it! Our snowblower is busted, so I had to just pack the snow down with my Jeep last night so Brian could get out this morning. That snow was WAY to heavy for me to shovel the entire driveway, LOL! I’d still be out there! I did shovel his parking spot at least, hehe!!

  9. Alice says:

OMG that driveway will give me nightmares!! Is it paved or gravel? This is making me reconsider some of my house criteria as we start house shopping, haha!

    • kilax says:

It’s gravel! MUAH HA HA! So we’ll have to maintain that, too! FUN TIMES!!!! 🙂 (nah, we really don’t mind, as long as we can afford it)

  10. Definetely invest in a plow or some snowshoes, ha ha, for that monster of a driveway.

    • kilax says:

I already have snowshoes! We’ll get the plow eventually. There’s going to be a lot to invest it up front, and we have to prioritize 🙂

  11. Mica says:

This reminds me of us not owning a real windshield scraper until our LAST winter in Illinois. We had a really long, crappy one that wouldn’t actually scrape anything off, so it took forever. Then our last year, we used a real one (like, a little one from a gas station, haha), and it made so much of a difference!

What are you going to do about that long-ass driveway full of snow? Does someone else handle snow removal? Will you get a snowplow or blower?

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha! At some point, enough is enough, right?!

I think for the first year or so we’ll pay someone to plow it. Eventually, we’ll need a snowblower and a plow though.

I’m behind on your blog posts, but congrats on the new home. I’ve been responsible for snow shoveling for years. It’s easier with a concrete driveway (as opposed to dirt or asphalt)
