Nail polish on the train
Hey ladies (or men, what the hell!), where do YOU like to paint your nails?
- At home
- At the salon
- On the train
- Other
To the ghetto fabulous woman on the train painting her nails this morning – what the fuck hell is wrong with you? I don’t want to smell nail polish at 6:30 am in the morning! Paint your goddamn frickin’ nails at home! Sure, it may be convenient to paint them on the train, but it’s also very convenient for me to get out of my seat and punch you in the face. Take your pick.
And this is me in a GOOD mood.
I guess I should just be happy it was her fingernails and not her toenails. And that she was sitting on the complete opposite side of the train. I feel worse for the people closer to her. Smells like that bother me (I get migraines). Would it bother you?
That would very much bother me. I paint my nails at home in my bathroom and would never think to do it in public! You know what else really bugs me that doesn’t seem to be common sense not to do? When people blow their nose at the dinner table. We have a friend who does that and it seriously makes me feel like I am going to puke. I do have sort of a sensitive tummy for things like that but still!
Being the easily irritated and tactless person that I am, I probably would have said something nasty to her. That is seriously ridiculous.
Painting nails in a confined space should be a crime. When I paint my nails at home with the windows open, my husband and dog still both complain. (And you think I’m kidding about the dog? I’m not. She gets off the couch and moves to the other side of the room. That shit is pungent!)
I understand trying to utilize your time and all…..but that’s a bit much. Not to mention, it could cause a mess for yourself…and even others. I do my nails at HOME and when I have plenty of time to make sure they are done well, without smudges, messes, etc. On the train?? That’s just weird.
That would give me instant migraine. I won’t let my daughter paint her nails in the morning because the smell makes me sick to my stomach, too. Ugh. People who can’t groom at home have issues.
Ewwww – that would completely piss me off and give me a headache. Honestly, why not just light up a cig while she’s at it – to me, it is just as bad as smoke in a confined place.
How rude! I usually do mine in the car on the way to work in the morning. Guess this means I can’t touch them up on the way to the race Saturday?
I’ve been riding the train for about 13 years and have seen people do the craziest shit on the train. They treat the space like they were in their own living room. There is a newsletter that gets put out on the train about all the annoying things people do on the train, its hilarious to read. Nothing like being confined in a space with no air circulation for an hour with that going on. I hope I don’t read about you punching someone and getting arrested (lol)!
That is gross, it is akin to cutting yoru nails on the train.
I think because I grew up with a dad who was incredibly sensitive to the smell of both nailpolish and nailpolish remover, I am very careful about when and where I do my nails. One time I tried painting the nails in the car with E. and he was NOT happy. So there is no way I would do it in a confined space with anyone else, especially a whole train full of people I don’t know. That’s incredibly rude, and I’m sure you weren’t the only one who was bothered. The conductor should have said something…OR you could write a letter to that Metra newsletter! Ha ha! 🙂
omg!!! i can’t believe someone had the audacity to paint their nails on the train!! but apparently from the comments left people just act like they’re at home… damn!!! i try to be conscious of where i paint my nails cause i know the smell is horrible!! your reaction though, well, it made me laugh, BUT only cause i would have reacted the same way… i would have been freaking livid!!!! i mean like ranting and raving non-stop livid!!! (i get so worked up over what others think are just tiny things….) maybe i need to go back and re-read your podcast post… ugh!!!
=^..^=
It would bother me too. I don’t even like people who wear perfume or strong lotions in enclosed spaces (seriously people, if you are going to be on a plane or a bus for a while with other folks? SKIP the perfumes.)
I paint mine at home… if I remember and have the time, which is about 6 times a year. However, it used to be a great way to keep me from snacking in the evenings since you can’t touch anything and the smell turns your tastebuds off. I really should get back to doing that.
I commuted to school by Metra for a year, and the things people would do on the train would bother me so much! Like painting their nails. Or talking on the phone the entire time. I do NOT want to hear your conversation, in fact, I’m trying to study so please shut up. I really wish they had “quiet cars” or something. The people who would sit their bags next to them on the train so no one would sit there really bothered me. Being a small female, many people opted to sit next to me because they had more room than if they sat next to the 250 pound man. I don’t miss the train.
That’s so rude and inconsiderate! And also, what if the train lurched or something? Wouldn’t she get nail polish all over her hands?
That would bother me….smells bug me.
And yikes, when I was sickadoodle I blew my nose all the time, now I feel bad.
Seriously people do the must effed up things. What’s next? Changing a pad on the train? Just plain Inconsiderate.
WOW, painting your nails in an enclosed area next to strangers–that’s (she’s?) a bitch!! Glad you refrained from kicking her inconsiderate ass.
Jesus, I ride the metro (in DC we call it the Metro) a lot, and it really is amazing what people do. It’s as if they forget that they are surrounded by PEOPLE.
Someone should have sat next to her and started spraying perfume….that or coughing on her and mention their recent trip to Mexico
Stuff like that is normally just weird, but I agree- it’s the fumes that make it totally unacceptable in a social setting. Hopefully she stumbles across your blog…
Totally unacceptable that she was painting her nails in an enclosed/confined space! She should have been told to put the stinky nail polish away. Some people are actually allergic to smells like that and can become violently ill. How inconsiderate!!
Uh……..I learned something new about your dad today. 😀 Really?? Does he paint them hot pink or red? LOL Remind me not to be driving on the road when he’s doing that. haha
sigh…this makes me so irritated. I can’t STAND strong smells when I’m trapped someplace (like work where perfume should be banned). I find it so offensive and rude. People are very inconsiderate about this – I think some people believe that because they like a smell, everyone else will as well.
Oh, that would absolutely bother me! Maybe she can’t smell it, but everyone within half a mile can…why would you even *think* that was okay?! How rude!
It’s totally wrong for someone to expose everyone else to something as strong as nail polish fumes in an environment that they can’t escape from. She deserved a punch in the face for sure. I either paint my nails at home, or in the salon or at school where those smells should be expected.
Of course I would paint my nails on a train. How else to say “good morning” to all my fellow passengers?
“…it’s also very convenient for me to get out of my seat and punch you in the face.” …this made me laugh out loud!
Moral of the story: people suck.
That’s just plain stupid. She would get my patented (and trademarked!) evil and dirty look supreme stare down.
PS…GOOD LUCK TOMORROW!!
I’ll be wearing mostly red!! (Or at least red shorts!) I’m leaving in a few minutes…I’ll keep my eye out for the two of you!
I am one of those rare sort who never paints her finger nails. The toes I’ll let the chicks in the salon do it.
I am SO RELIEVED by all of your responses. I have been super hyper conscious of my bitchiness level and actually contemplated not posting this because I thought everyone would think I was being a huge bitch. So THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! It feels good to have so many people agree with me.
