Open trails, open invitation

By , June 13, 2012 5:10 am

Now that the trail near my home is more visible (from the road) I see people on it all the time! It’s exciting! Every time someone runs by I say “that could be my new running friend” and Steven has to hold me back from chasing them down.

It’s odd, but I do think the fact that part of the trail is now out in the open, rather than back in the woods, has increased its traffic. I wonder if all of these people didn’t know about the trail until now? What a shame!

Are there any paths you run on, or places you go, that you feel many others don’t know about?

Unfortunately, I have not been one of those people utilizing the trail this week. I worked downtown Monday-today and while I had plans to get runs in, a bad headache, working late, and not wanting to get up at 3:00 to run squashed those plans. I am worried I won’t get much of an opportunity to run this week (because of weekend travel plans) but it really doesn’t matter! I am the only one who cares how many miles I get in, and I am not even training for anything! Stupid runner’s guilt!

  1. I love your outfit!!

There’s one trail around here that I don’t feel like is used very much… and I don’t run on in for that reason. It feels WAY too lonely and secluded (it’s in the country and through woods) and it doesn’t feel super safe.

      Thanks!

I was thinking that – most secluded trails probably stay secluded because people do not want to run on them alone!

I keep forgetting you get up at 3am sometimes to run. Wow that is early and Im really impressed that you do that. We have a trail near us but I don’t run on it alone cause it is all wooded and Brian worries about my safety.

Don’t be impressed! It has not been happening much lately! My sleep schedule is so messed up and I have been trying not to confuse it even more. It makes me feel bad not to get up and run, but I think it’s better that I have energy later in the day ๐Ÿ™‚

Although sometimes I feel like there’s no one on the trail but me, the DPRT is no secret ๐Ÿ™‚

I think there’s a fair number of wooded trails like that in this area but it seems the only way to find out about them is to know someone who can show them to you! A lot of the shorter, paved pathways seemed to be pretty visible to people.

  5. Maybe this week will turn into a nice recovery week for you, those are nice every now and then. I just found out about a path that runs along th Chicago river that is west of my house, but I haven’t checked it out yet. I heard that its quiet and there isn’t a lot of foot traffic where it goes on for quite a few miles. Hope to check it out soon.

I think it will! I just seem to be stuck in this high mileage / low mileage back and forth schedule every other week. I want to get more consistent but AHHH summer schedules!!!

I am excited to hear when you check out that trail!

  6. The forest preserve right next to my office (old office I guess?) is hardly ever used. My friend Drew and I used to run it a lot during lunch and love it bc we’d never run into anyone!

I truly feel like most people have a fear of the unknown. Unknown being an unpaved trail. When you pave something, its saying “Hello, i am nice and safe, come run on me!” I am having an off week with running too. Stupid job. Next week will be better ๐Ÿ™‚

I think that is a fantastic picture of you and Data!! I really like it!!
    =^..^=

    • kilax says:

Thank you! Data is very distracted in the pic! I think there was a bird, or bird-like noise ahead of us ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m confused. I know you explained it to me already, but I can’t picture it. Does that nice paved trail link up to the one in the woods? Where do you start your trail runs?

    • kilax says:

It does link up to the trail in the woods that we took! It is all part of the same trail now. I still usually start by the entrance to the woods, but when I come back I sometimes run on the new part of the trail ๐Ÿ™‚

It was SO GREAT catching up with you over lunch today!!!

You look so stylish in that picture! I continue to be very inspired by how fashionable you always look. Also, I didn’t mention at lunch that the necklace you were wearing today is gorgeous!

Unfortunately being a city resident there are few paths or running locations for me that most people don’t already know about. =( But I loved your comment about thinking, “That could be my new running friend!” everytime you see someone, and Steven having to hold you back. You are too cute!!! =D

Thank you! I try to dress nice when I go downtown since I don’t do it that often. Back in February Erin came over and did a closet consultation for me! If you are looking for some fresh ideas you should have her come over (http://looplooks.wordpress.com/closet-consultations/)! You guys live so close to one another!

Were there any paths back home (in the burbs) that only you knew about? ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Erin says:

Yay for the new trail! I want to come up and run on it now. Even though it’s full of death hills.

  12. Marcia says:

Cool new trail! I have many routes but nothing new lately. I always say I’ll venture out on a new path but haven’t…yet. Love your skirt!

  13. Anne says:

So runner’s guilt IS a thing! I thought it was just me, since I always feel guilty about something (Catholic guilt, what can I say?). Last night I thought I *should* go for a run, but was tired and my legs were dead, and I still needed my fiance to tell me it was okay to take the night off. For me though, it feels like anytime I pass up an opportunity to exercise I might backslide. Or I might lose some of that running agility that I’ve been building up.

I just run around my and neighboring neighborhoods around the city, so there’s no hidden trails here. But I do love River Park and the North Shore Channel Trail for biking because it doesn’t get too crowded. I just have to work up to running the 2 miles to the park before I can run on that trail ๐Ÿ™‚

    Cute skirt, by the way!

    • kilax says:

Oh yes. Runner’s guilt is a HUGE thing! Wait until you get a chest cold (I hope you don’t!) and feel like you should be running. Or have a migraine and want to run. Or worse… an injury. I have a hard time taking rest days and am so annoyed I was too busy to run earlier in the week. At least I was doing fun things though! ๐Ÿ™‚

How long is the North Shore Channel Trail? Where does that start?

      Thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Anne says:

It starts in River Park in the city, at Lawrence and Francisco, and goes up to Evanston. I think it connects to another trail that goes up to the Botanic Gardens, but the furthest I’ve made it on my bike is Golf Road in Evanston. I love it because it’s paved, doesn’t have a ton of traffic lights (only in Skokie by the Lincolnwood mall), and the part in the city goes under busy streets and along the river.

And uh, I’ve already forced myself to run with a cold/sore throat/headache. I just didn’t know what that was.

    I like the outfit, too!

    Love the outfit.
