FWP: Working from home
I love working from home, but when the weather is so nice and I am sitting in front of the open window, it’s totally torturous not to be outside. *
And then! THEN! A group of runners goes by! 10 of them! JEALOUS! (creepy stalker photo of 6 of them below)
As Gingerfoxxx says, First World Problems (which I abbreviated FWP in the post title).
Maybe next time I see a large group like this I will sprint outside and join them. “Oh hai, I’m Kim…”
Really though, I could run at home during lunch, but I found that when I did that, I was thinking about stupid work crap and it was ruining my run and creating a bad vibe that I associated with my neighborhood. When I run during lunch at the office, I am with other people so my mind is able to wander. But then there is the whole “make it back to the office on time” stress.
Not really sure where I am going with this blog post… oh, here we go!
If you work from home, are you able to separate your work life from your private life?
It comes and goes for me. I don’t leave my computer or tablet on when it’s non-business hours, and I have gotten really good about not checking my smart phone for messages (also during non-business hours). But I am unable to relax completely during lunch, and I have to turn everything off and put it away when I am done working so I don’t think about it.**
*But it’s a thousand times better than being in the office.
**But, it’s still a thousand times better than being in the office.
How timely! I’m working from home today and ran on my lunch break. I never have much trouble separating my work and private life because my job isn’t too stressful. I also enjoy getting out on the lake trails by my house as most of my runs are done in the city on my lunch break.
Solution? Work a 24/7 job for which you don’t get paid. Oh wait. That’s me…
For the record? It’s hot as hell out there. I nearly died today. True story. Well, I FELT like I was dying. MUST. RUN. EARLIER.
I ALSO saw a group of runners outside today! I decided to enjoy the sun on my lunchbreak and do some shopping, and right when I walked outside there was a group of about 10 runners looking to get started. I got really excited and wanted to join them and find out more about this lunch loop running group! Instead I just watched silently while pretending to play with my phone. Haha.
Do you ever run during lunch? I do rarely… for the reasons I mentioned – getting back before I turn in to a pumpkin!
I used to run during my lunch break a lot more when I was marathon training. Now, not so much. I would take my lunch break around 3pm that way when I got back, I would only be mildly sweaty and red faced for a little while before heading home.
Just like Kandi said… I worked from home today and got a nice (but HOT) 4 miles in. Now I’m sitting here doing some work (and obviously catching up on some blogs!). I’ve been working from home more and more lately and I usually don’t have problems separating the two, unless work is REALLY crazy and doesn’t allow me to go running. I found that if I woke up and immediately put on my running clothes, I’ll get out there eventually during my ‘lunch’. My lunch break depends on the day and what else I have to do. Even if it’s 3pm and I’ve already eaten lunch in from of my laptop, I try to get out there for an ‘official’ break.
Your neighborhood looks like such a great area to run through! I do work from home on occasion and I have a very tough time separating work from private life. I’ll be on conference calls while simultaneously throwing clothes into the washing machine or doing dishes, that kind of stuff. It’s all about productivity!!! (Good thing that they have mute buttons on phones)
I run at lunch a few days a week and actually find it helps me. Usually, if I’m struggling with finding a solution to something, it comes to me easily if I just get away from the computer and outside. I tend to have issues staying away from the computer though and am connected to work many hours out of the day. It balances with the other stuff I do during working hours though!
I know I’ve told you before, but I’m in AWE that you can motivate yourself to do actual work when you work from home. Maybe because your job is more than just sitting around waiting for people to email you? Sometimes?
Ha ha! Yeah, I do sometimes have things I can review on my own. Then I send my comments and am waiting for responses 🙂 And sometimes… rarely… I get to be creative and do my own thing!
(then I send it to people and wait for their response)
I’m working from home today and spent my lunch hour training at the gym (and walking to Jewel for sushi, so I guess more than an hour…). I’m a bad example of diligence while working from home since I tend to pound out my work in the office for 3 days a week so I can just relax and check emails on my at-home days. I definitely have a hard time separating work and home stuff. If I am busy with work, I’ll get up to get a drink or something, then feel compelled to clean the entire kitchen while I’m up.
I have only worked from home for my day jobs once, so not much insight there. For my side projects, I set aside a designated amount of time to work, then put myself in our office until that time is up.
I’m working from home these days, and let me tell you that it is way too distracting. See like right now when I’m supposed to be writing I’m instead blogging and checking in on you. Sheesh…can’t win.
Since you are still keeping your spring racing options open, I just posted a giveaway on my blog for the Chicago 13.1 marathon on June 9th. I’ve never done the course, but the entry is free and you can’t really lose with that.
Happy almost Friday;)
I like it when you take a break to check in on me!!! 🙂
Ooo! I got a free entry to that race too. So maybe it will become my new goal? We’ll see! 🙂
I cannot work from home! Technically, I could work from home, but every time I tried it I ended up finding more interesting stuff to do, like washing the dishes or watch movies. Anything except for work, really. So, I just go to work to work and stay at home when I don’t work. Simple 🙂 Seriously, how do you motivate yourself to work at home? Am I the only one who cannot work at home to save my life?
I make a to do list. And I try only to check personal email a few times 🙂 And only snorgle the cat a few times too. 🙂
Heyyyyyyy Girl….
let’s get some vegan chocolate Easter Bunnies and sit on the curb and cheer those runners on instead.
And blog hiatus busted.
Ryan! Let’s!
You weren’t supposed to see this!!!!!!!!!!!!
I used to work from home every day as a medical transcriptionist. I’d give anything to be able to do that again! I felt like I got soooooo much more done around the house during the work week.
I prefer running in the mornings! I did a mid-day run a few weeks ago, in between travelling home from out of town (got home at 10 AM), and heading to the office for the afternoon. That was good, although short – and work-thought-focused.
I find trouble running in the afternoon, lately because of tummy issues, but historically because I would carry my work stress with me and not want to run. I’ve been working on that, although my stomach rebels :(. FWP. At least I have food in my stomach, and the ability to buy $$ running shoes.
I would totally have followed them like a creeper 🙂
