- I went to a wedding for a college classmate on Saturday in Ames, Iowa. I guess before I get in to what I am going to say, I should explain something about my degree. I was in the five-year Architecture program at Iowa State University. The first year of the program is general education type classes and one design class. After the first year, you apply to officially get in to the Architecture program, then you spend the next four years with the same (in my case, 65 or so) people. Most of your last four years of classes are architecturally focused. This set-up resulted in there being very tight knit groups of friends in the architecture program. It was almost cliquey. I never belonged to a group, but was friendly with almost everyone. A-n-y-w-a-y… I was good friends with the groom at this wedding and really liked his group of architecture friends. They were all at the wedding, as well as a few other architecture friends (that I don’t consider being part of his “group”). Being there was almost like a class reunion. I had a blast at the wedding, but it made me feel kind of like a loser for not making more of an effort to be social with these people in college. It’s not that I was stuck-up, or quiet, I just didn’t go out to all of their parties, or the bars or anything like that. I went to class, came back to studio to work, but kind of stayed home otherwise. I somewhat regret that.
- On Sunday we went to Cedar Falls, Iowa for my nephew’s birthday party. It happened to be the same day as a car show and cruise, so I went cruisin’ with my dad. I’m pretty sure my parents and my dad’s parents met while cruisin’.
- Monday was my dad’s mom’s 75th birthday! I got her a book, then saw this hilarious balloon and had to get it for her as well.
- My aunt Sue found some old cards/drawings I made for my uncle Tom (my dad’s brother that passed away in May of 2006). They totally cracked me up (and made me a bit teary-eyed). They kind of remind me of the letter my nephew made for me!
- My sister has gotten in to sewing, so I asked her to make me some pouches to hold things in. I asked her on Friday and she had them done on Sunday! I love them! The fabric she chose is great! You can see some of the other stuff she’s made here.
- The director of my division at work recommended me for a detail in Washington DC (a detail is when you take on another role at another location for a period of time, but return to your previous job when you get back). I don’t have many details about the detail (ha ha) but I am going to apply for it. It was actually a really hard decision to make (even to apply) so I am anxious to see what happens – there will be many applicants from the nation for 2-3 positions.
FIRST!1!111!!! 😉
^^That was a joke! I was excited because I kept refreshing your blog all morning and then there was a post! Ta-da!!
That card is so cute! I will go swimming with you on July 31! I’m glad you like your bagareenos! Sorry in advance if they start falling apart…… 😉
LOL! I loved your first comment. I was surprised you even knew people say that. You know a lot about blogging afterall 😉
I am happy you want to go swimming with me at July 31. LOL!
I showed my coworker the bags because she just got in to sewing too! She is making headbands, coffee holders (like the cardboard ones they put on cups at Starbucks), belts and these cute flower things that she puts on bobby pins and wears in her hair. I asked her to make me a pillow to use on the train. Should I commission that to you too and see which I like better?
Good luck with the new detail – hope you get it! (that is if you want it lol!) Sounds like a fun weekend. I love weddings – I didnt really stay in touch with a lot of my college friends- they all moved away so its hard to see them because no one is close. Plus no one else has tried to stay in touch.
I love the bags your sister made for you. I commented on her blog about them!
I hope you get the detail in DC so you can come hang out with me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, that was one of the first things I thought when I found out about the opportunity! We’ll be spending a lot of time together… because I only know a few peeps in DC 🙂
Awwww such a cute card!
So does that balloon stay down? NOt float up? Too funny!
Good luck with the detail! Hubby is in DC now.
We were thinking that the weight of the little paper paws maybe makes it stay down? It was so cute. You could walk it and everything 🙂
Thanks 🙂
Another cyclone! I went to Iowa State the year of the great flood. I only stayed 2 semesters but I still really liked Ames! Was Dugan’s Deli still there when you were there?
That doesn’t sound familiar, so maybe not! Where was it? How cool that you went to ISU for a bit!
So much to comment on!
I love L-O-V-E the pouches your sister made! Very cute!
So cool that your Aunt found those cards and drawings! The paper you used would make Grandma Pudge proud. I’ll explain some other time.
Can’t wait to hear more details about the detail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh! I do want to hear about the paper. My aunt said my grandma used to get it from the school district HQ where she worked. They were going to throw it away so she would give it to us to draw on.
How long is the train ride from NYC to DC again? 😛
Wow! You packed a lot of stuff in your weekend!
The pouches are super cute.
How long would you have to be in DC? My husband hasn’t had to travel much for work so far, but mentioned this weekend that it’s possible he could have to go overseas once in a while.
My director tentatively thinks 120 days, but we really have no idea!
That would be cool if your husband got to go overseas!
Your dad’s car is awesome! Is that a 1940s Ford? Any details on it?
Its a 1939 Chevy Coupe!
My sister left a comment, but I am not sure if you saw it – it’s a 1939 Chevy Coupe. He bought it in the late 70s/early 80s in Nevada, IA. A friend knew he was looking for one and found it for him. It has a Chevy 350 engine. He’s modified the interior a bit – added a cushion bench in the back and cushion/fabric on the interior. One time he let me try to drive it when I still had my learner’s permit. I am not sure how much HP it has, but I killed it over and over. Ha ha.
I am putting that car on my wish list!! LOL Does he let you tear up the town in it these days?
No way! Hee hee. I haven’t driven it since that day in junior high or whenever it was. 🙂 Maybe he would let me if I ask..
I think the profile pic is classy. Love it. Those pouches are adorable, your sis is talented.
Thanks! My sis brought me that hat back from FL 🙂
The bags are beautiful! DC is fun – there’s the Rock’n’Roll National Marathon in March! Would love to do it but likely won’t be able to train :(. My family is from DC & I went to college there, so let me know if you need any suggestions on anything!
Ooo! I will let you know if I end up going there! I will needs lots of suggestions!
Why won’t you be able to train? Wedding planning?
So, I first read one of your points that your MOM turned 75 and was like, WOW. From the pictures I’ve seen of her on your blog, she looks GOOD for 75. 😉 Then I reread.
I want those pouches your sister made. They are awesome!
There’s a video around where a real cat meets one of those balloon cats. The results are totally expected… but no less hilarious. I wish I could find it for you…
Your sister is talented!
Good luck with the detail thing. Sounds like fun! That balloon is awesome! Where did you find it?
The balloon was at a grocery store in Iowa called Hy-Vee. Have you ever seen one on your travels? I thought they were expensive when I lived in IA, but now that I’ve been to Dominick’s, I see how cheap it was there!
Congrats on the rec from your boss! That’s super flattering, no?
Yeah, it is 🙂 I am happy he recommended me! He told me he thinks I could be a manager/in a leader role someday, so I think he is trying to get me on that path!
omg! i just saw that same cat balloon featured in a youtube video! i have to find it now… hang on… YES! here:

Ha! That video is awesome. It popped so quickly!
Sounds like you’ve been busy, but in a good way. I love those weddings when you go and connect or reconnect with lots of people. Like others have said – nice pouches!
And I’ll be wishing you luck (not that you need it) on the detail in DC. It sounds as though that would be a very cool opportunity!
