Cold weather sweater
I have one wool sweater, and I only wear when it gets really cold – otherwise, I feel WAY too hot.*
Today it’s kind of cold. High of 15°F, negative wind chills, blah blah blah.
When I get dressed for work, I think about two things:
- Will I be comfortable? and
- Do I have any meetings today? (implies I might wear something “nicer”)
Today, comfortable means “are the clothes warm enough for the 10 minute walk from Union Station to the office?” I wore this sweater and turtleneck, warm pants, knee-high ski socks, utility boots, my Columbia jacket with a hood, and of course, a hat, gloves and scarves. I skipped the running tights – sometimes when it gets really cold, I wear them under my pants. So I was warm enough, except for my thighs.
What do you wear when it gets really cold and you have to go walk outside? Do you have certain things you only wear “when it’s ‘cold'”? How cold does it get where you live?
I’ve actually walked to work before in below 0 temps accompanied by well below 0 windchills. I don’t mind the cold, as long as it’s not a suprise. I check the forecast the night before and plan what I am going to wear that way. I am shocked** to see people outside without hats and gloves!
Aww, Data is so cuddly in the morning when he wants to be fed. Muah ha ha.
*I was too hot in it getting ready for work this morning – our bathroom lights are really bright (that is not our bathroom in the pictures above – that’s the guest bathroom). But I don’t have to worry about getting too hot in the office, because it’s always cold.
**And I am equally shocked by the people who constantly*** complain about the cold – it’s the midwest! You know it’s going to get like this! Duh?
***I don’t mean the occasional, “WOW! IT’S COLD!” I mean the constant, “It’s so cold outside, wah wah wah, I am a little baby who loves to complain all the time…”****
****Don’t worry, I am not referring to anyone who reads this blog with that statement! I am referring to someone who always complains to me in person about how cold it is, and not in a fun, “Wow, it’s cold” (as mentioned above) way.
…and I am really, really glad I don’t live in the midwest. It’s cold enough here, thank you very much, and I HATE it!! I’m all for layering — I actually LIKE to layer — but not when I HAVE to wear six layers to even approach something resembling the body temperature of a living person vs. a corpse.
<3 <3
I am guilty of now wearing hat and gloves sometimes. Or I’ll wear a hat but not gloves (that’s what pockets are for, right?). But, I will not usually be the one complaining about the cold. My coworkers think I’m crazy for wanting to walk or run during lunch in the cold. It doesn’t get quite as cold here in DC as Chicago though. Also- I don’t have to walk very far from the train to get to work. So the worst I have it is waiting for the train in the morning.
Cute sweater but I love that you call 15* only ‘kind of’ cold. It’s barely above freezing here and I’m ready to pack my bags and move to Bermuda. 😉
I am not sure why, but it doesn’t feel that cold to me! Probably because I am all bundled up… and have an extra thick layer of fat. Ha.
I really love that sweater!
I layer like crazy. Because I can barely catch my breath in this cold/wind. But then it’s a sauna in my office.
Honestly. It’s like I’m not comfortable in my everday activities until April. Ugh.
Once November starts, I start wearing my sweaters to work. Usually what happens is I wake up, look at the weather and see it is cold out. Put on my sweater, come to work, drink my coffee, get REALLY hot, wonder why I wore the sweater, finally cool off and feel glad I have the sweater to keep me warm at work!
We also dress for the cold here – I have been wearing my long johns every day for the past two weeks + wool sweaters and my Buff. Two pairs of socks for walking to school with my son. It’s not quite as cold here as in Chicago but the houses are kept at lower temps. We normally don’t turn on the radiators in the upstairs unless it gets really bad. I also watch the weather report to see what to wear.
I hate cold weather. In cold weather I even hate walking my kids to the bus stop. I do, but I really dread it every morning. I literally start obsessing over it the night before, planning what I need to wear to be warm enough for the walk and then wait at the bus stop. I am also confused about people who don’t wear mittens and hats.
You look so pretty in that sweater!
Cute Sweater!
I am not a fan of cold and windy weather. But having the dogs forces us to get dressed to take them out. If I am just hibernating and only taking them out my outfit is a long sleeve tee shirt, a fleece, a pair of leggings and a pair of jeans or warm yoga pants wool socks and long waterproof boots.
For work, I tend to wear tights under pants and tank tops or silk long sleeve shirts under sweaters.
I like your sweater!
I don’t mind the cold (though living in the south, it’s all relative) if I’m dressed for it. My criteria for getting ready in the morning is based on 1. my meeting schedule 2. how much walking around campus I’m going to do. While much of the medical center is connected by sky bridges, my building is not connected and it’s one block before I can get inside a building that is connected (at which point I can walk for several blocks and be sheltered from the elements…whatever they may be!)
Holy Crap! I was complaining this morning that tomorrow was going to be a high of 28 degrees! 15 degrees!!!!!!!! I feel for you!
I love your sweater, though! I get dressed in the morning with the same questions!
That sweater is pretty–and Data complements it well!
I have boots that are supposed to keep you warm up to like -30 degrees, but my toes were chilly this morning. I think tomorrow I need to be sure to wear some warm socks over my trouser socks! (I always want to wear tights under my pants but then I start sweating in them as soon as I am inside)
Oh, and I used to have a co-worker who was also from Ohio (so it’s not like she grew up in a warmer climate) who complained about the weather ALL. THE. TIME. Frickin’ move if you hate it so much!
Sometimes when I wear tights to work I have to take them off because I start sweating too!
Cute sweater!
When it’s below 20 I wear tights under my pants and socks. I have a few sweaters I prefer to wear when it’s cold out but I find that my down coat makes it so I don’t have to wear as many layers on top. My toes typically get the coldest. I’m thinking I need up upgrade my snow boots.
That’s a cute sweator. A little Mary Tylor Moore – I like it! It’s pajama day at my school today so I”m in this: http://www.target.com/s/ref=sr_related_1?ie=UTF8&keywords=christmas%20pajamas#quickInfo
But with Santa feet instead of Monkey feet.
Ha! I wish I could wear my PJs to work. Sweat pants and a t-shirt, oh yeah.
Data is too cute!! 🙂
It doesnt get too cold around here, not like the rest of Canada anyhow. I usually just layer a bit and Im good to go.
I have this large trench coat (Timberland brand) that is a very warm coat. I normally will have a few extra layers underneath, but the coat itself is very good at keeping me warm.
Data kind of disappears when he’s on your sweater.
I actually don’t have too much cold weather gear. A few thin sweatshirts, an assortment of long-sleeved t’s, a heavy coat, one scarf, and a hat. Oh, and a pair of Fuggs that I hate wearing. I think I would enjoy cold weather so much more if I had more clothes to wear but it just seems silly to spend a bunch of money on clothes that will sit in the back of my closet 10 months out of the year! 😉
We complain about the cold a lot here. We also complain about the hot. So, Floridians are really never happy. I’d still much prefer a 90 degree day to a 40 degree day.
I like that sweater!
I live in Canada and it gets cold pretty much everywhere that’s not Vancouver, so I always find it funny every winter when the news has 50% weather related stories and everyone’s going ON AND ON about how cold it is/how much snow there is or isn’t/the wind chill/etc. It’s Canada for God sakes!
I’m not a cold person usually, in fact I’m normally the hot person, but I think they’re cutting back on the heating bill at work so I’m a bit chilled; seriously, my fingers may freeze and fall off. I know it’s cold outside, so I’m prepared for that.
You need some finger-less gloves for work! A friend made me a pair and I am so happy to have them. It’s very cold in my office too. Sometimes I wear my winter coat!
🙂 I love the second photo. Dara is going in for a head-but <3
Thanks 🙂 Data loves to head but! 🙂
I do have my own snowshoes, as well as my mom and dad too. We have ones from LLbean. I think they are the 100 dollar ones and they work really well. I love them and have used them for years! They are durable and lightweight and easy to get your foot in. They stay strapped to your feet and I have had no problems! Hope this helps!
Cool! That does help! Thanks for letting me know! I think if I get some Christmas money I may buy a pair! Or I may use the money to enter races. Ha ha. We’ll see!
oh i LOVE that sweater! my trouble with warm snuggly sweaters is that my skin is SO GOSHDARN SENSITIVE and i can’t stand having wool or anything vaguely wool-like touching my skin, especially where it’s extra sensitive up by my neck. it rules out so many adorable sweaters!
in other news, your previous post!? OH MY GOODNESS YOU ARE CRAZY RUNNING IN SUCH COLD WEATHER! 🙂
Thanks! I wore a turtleneck under. When I was a kid I thought sweaters were too scratchy and I was too sweaty to wear something under then!
LOL. It doesn’t feel that cold to me yet! I have a thick layer of fat keeping me warm 🙂
i love that sweater too! it’s great and very stylish. i wear some sorrel boots and some sweaters that are lined. not the most attractive ensemble…but it keeps me WARM!
