Random Thoughts Thursday 199

  • Jen and I saw A Star Is Born Tuesday night. We both loved it! I thought the acting (and singing!) was great. I didn’t know much about the story going in, so if you’re familiar with it, you probably know what that means. Vague much? (Don’t want to spoil it!)
  • I finally finished reading The Ensemble, and liked it! (My slow reading was due to being too tired to read before bed, not from lack of enjoyment.) The Ensemble told the story of a string quartet from the time they formed the group, up to twenty years later. The book focused on family relationships – theirs as a family to each other, their families from childhood, and the families they formed as adults. It was very relatable, and the only annoying part was the often used musical metaphors. But it’s about music, so what did I expect?! Now I am reading a mystery/thriller my coworker recommended – Give Me Your Hand (which I like, except the main character works in a lab and they mention testing on animals). That coworker just finished reading Aurora, on my recommendation!

  • I was going to tell you guys about something that’s bothering me, but I forgot what it is, so that’s good, right? (I could fill this spot with complaining about my doctor wanting me to pay for an extra test they had to do because they screwed up the first one, but, eh. I’m still not sure what the outcome of that is, so I’ll save it for later.)
  • We got our TSA Pre✓ Known Traveler Numbers within four days, like Shelley did. I applied the numbers to all our upcoming flights, so we’ll see if that works! Also, I realized when doing this, that ANYONE I send my flight email to, with the “edit traveler info” link in, can, well, edit my info. I usually just send it to whomever I am traveling to see, so while I doubt they would edit things, it’s probably not a good idea for me to share that link, in practice.
  • Here’s a random Apollo picture for you. He decided it would be a good idea to lick and chew on my hair that day.

  • I’ve been running weekly construction meetings (sigh), and realized I do something obnoxious – I say a statement, then a person’s name to confirm what I said was true. Like, “Since xyz happened, we’re on schedule, right, Bob?” But what if that person wasn’t 100% listening? I think it would be better for me to say, “Bob, since xyz happened, we’re on schedule, correct?” Then they know I am addressing them. I’m gonna work on doing it that way.

I’ve seen the 70’s version of A Star is Born several times and really like it, and my mom and I were just talking about going to see it the other day (we’d just have to be in the same city to do that lol).

If I’m not speaking in a meeting I’m usually multi-tasking (I know, it’s a bad habit), which is exactly what I say when someone says my name and I don’t know what they asked or were talking about. Others do this in meetings too, so I think people not listening 100% is unfortunately pretty common! I don’t think you phrasing things that way is obnoxious though. People should be listening, not just when you call them out by name.

I hope you two can see it together!

It’s such a bad habit that I imagine everyone does on conference calls? And I suppose I would like it when someone calls my name out before rambling on and on about something then asking what I think. Ha!

We saw ASIB on Sunday – my first version ever. LOVED IT. But, um…I didn’t have a necessary item in my purse (no spoilers for those who haven’t seen it), and my friend who also saw it the same day said she too was lacking a certain item. Really enjoyed the entire story and the singing – I’ve bought the soundtrack and I never do that (with the exception of the greatest movie soundtrack ever, Grease).

I didn’t know anyone could edit your travel info – now, I usually just send it to whoever I’m visiting, but still, that seems weird. I added our KTN to our flights but put our numbers in the notes on my phone in case they don’t show up when we’re at the airport.

I worked really hard not to need that item but I still felt SICK over it! And the dog! UGH! WHY DID THEY HAVE TO HAVE A DOG?!?!?! CRY. I am thinking about getting the soundtrack to listen to on a long drive I have tomorrow.

      OMG I LOVE GREASE!

I figured it out cause I was able to edit two flights that I didn’t make the reservations for! Good call on having it in your notes. I have a screenshot of it but think I will add it to notes, too. Steven is flying tomorrow and I will let you know if it works! Ha!

Re: the dog – I thought that the dog was playing very normally, very dog-like when he and Jack were outside in the leaves. Afterward I read that the dog IS Bradley Cooper’s…no wonder he was playing so well, he was with his real dad!

      • Melissa says:

The dog is what did Matt in…

        • Amy says:

          Uh-oh, I just can’t do movies where something bad happens to a dog… 🙁

I remember seeing the 2nd version of ASIB in the 70’s with Barbara Streisand – I loved the soundtrack as a kid, but I don’t remember much about the movie – I do think it had a tragic ending, though…

What did your co-worker think of Aurora? I am just finished the book I had to read for book club (Little Fires Everywhere – interesting read!) and am going to start Aurora today. What page was it again that Tom Hanks liked so much?

          • kilax says:

Nothing bad happens TO the dog. I can’t do those either. It’s just the dog being around that tugs at your heartstrings. 😉

That tragic ending is what I am talking about the dog being around for 😉

She liked Aurora! She liked the human aspects to (I need to respond to your email!). It was page 321! I should look up that book!

  3. I had never heard of A Star is Born (in any of its versions) until the trailer popped up in a YouTube video (or something similar) like…last week. Fail. Haha. I then assumed it was a biopic until I did some Googling. I live under a rock, it’s fine 😛

  4. Melissa says:

Matt and I saw ASIB last weekend and both LOVED IT. I didn’t know much going in (and certainly not the ending) other than that this was the 4th remake. The story was SO RAW though and I definitely was feeling all the emotions for a couple of days.

If you have Spotify, the soundtrack is on there (including a version with dialogue). I really liked Jackson Maine’s music and wish that more of “his” music existed outside of the soundtrack.

Amazing to me that Bradley Cooper spent hundreds of hours/multiple years learning to play and perfecting elements of that role.

    • kilax says:

I am glad he loved it too! I think our husbands would have but they didn’t think they would. Feeling raw and feeling it for a while is a great way to describe it.

I don’t, but I downloaded it! I liked his music too. I was glad it was super country. Ha.

Isn’t it?! I read that he was inspired to make this after sitting backstage at a concert and seeing the audience from behind the drumset.

  5. Stephany says:

Ohhh, I really really want to see A Star Is Born but I’m just not sure I can handle the emotional hangover afterwards. Movies like that just really do a number on me!

I have both of those books on my TBR list, so I’m glad to know you loved The Ensemble! It sounds like a good read.

  6. Mica says:

I’m glad you got your TSAPre sorted out; I hope it makes your travel to/from SF easier. (That being said, the TSAPre line is sometimes longer at SFO because so many people have it! But it moves more quickly.)

Do you feel like you read more in the evenings instead of watching TV? I’m always impressed by how much you read and wonder when you’re doing it? I feel like I have to make an intentional decision to set aside reading time (instead or knitting or, you know, screwing around on my phone), but I would really like to get into the habit.

    • kilax says:

I am curious to see how that goes! Steven used it flying to KC and loved it. And I get to go to Cleveland this week and will use it then. Yay…

Oh gosh, no. I wish I was reading then. We almost always watch a movie at night. Sigh. I just read on the train and before I go to bed. I’d love to do it more often!!! I do make the decision at night (in bed) to read instead of scroll on my phone, for sure.
