Four stories

One happy, one sad with a happy ending, one wtf is he doing, and one wtf is wrong with me.

One happy story

Athena, mother to our kitties, is in her forever home at Bobbi’s! She went home yesterday and is adapting well. I can’t stop smiling when I look at the pictures of her chilling in her new home! And I can’t stop asking Bobbi “how’s she doing now?” “now?” “what’s she doing?” Ha ha.

One sad with a happy ending story

This one is about amphibians so skip it if you want!

When I ride my bike in the basement, I often see shadows and movement in the window well. I assumed it was chipmunks climbing in and out (sigh) then one day I saw this guy hanging out and realized it was frogs!

I thought nothing of it until the next time I noticed a frog was in there and was trying to climb out and kept falling. So after I got off my bike I went outside and got two frogs out of there, and saw that there were several frog carcasses.

Ugh, I felt horrible that they were getting trapped in there and dying. (I think they’re climbing around in the hostas around the window well and fall in). So we put a “ramp” in for them to climb out, and I’ve been checking each day for trapped frogs. So far, so good.

One wtf is he doing story

I think Data is taking playing “the floor is lava” game to an extreme. For a few weeks, he’s been obsessed with sitting on tables and counters. And recently, he’s been trying to move from one raised surface to another without touching the ground. When he does touch the hardwood or tile floor on our first floor, he can only stand it for a little bit before bolting upstairs and getting on the bed.

Sigh.

The internet theorizes he is avoiding the floor because of fleas (nope), or he’s scared of something. He has been hiding in the closet a lot more than normal. Nothing seems to be wrong with his feet (that the floor would be bothering him). Poor dude. Thankfully, he is still going to the bathroom in the boxes on the first floor, but we had to move his food upstairs so he can eat off of the carpet (because he wouldn’t eat off the hardwood floors in the kitchen). If this continues, I’ll call the vet to see if he has any theories about what is going on.

One wtf is wrong with me story

Last night Khali was sitting on the carpeted stairs and I went to walk down them to pet her and fell and slid down several of the stairs on the outside of my left leg and the inside of my right one. Sigh. I have carpet burn, scrapes, and lumps under where I hit the steps. Oh, and did I mention it freaking HURT? I went to bed in pain. I feel better today, but pretty beat up. (Luckily I did not land on Khali – she ran up the stairs as I fell down, and is fine.)

Poor Data. Does he have arthritis? I wonder if the floors are cold and it makes him ache.

  2. Kathy says:

Wait til you have the kittens and you can do playdates….so cute.

Oh no those poor frogs, at least you figured it out 🙁

Maybe Data is practicing for when the kittens come home. Hope he is ok poor fella has been having a rough few months.

    Ouch that sounds sore!

I KNOW! I am getting so excited, seeing how much Athena loves her new home!

Right? Gah. I feel bad I didn’t realize earlier.

Hasn’t he though? I hate seeing him on the decline. I just want him to be comfortable and not in pain.

I am. Sigh. Gawd. What is wrong with me?!

  3. Chaitali says:

Poor Data. I hope it’s nothing serious and he’s back to himself soon! And that’s such a great idea to put up that ramp for the frogs. Glad it seems to be working.

    • kilax says:

I hope so too. I am definitely keeping track of it!

Yes! I felt so bad they were getting trapped down there! Silly guys!

  4. ChezJulie says:

Athena looks very comfortable and happy.

I hope you figure out what’s going on with Data. That does seem odd.

  5. Oh dear, poor Data! That does not sound like a fun way to live life at all, being afraid of touching the floor 🙁 I hope it is just that he’s feeling fearful and that it’s not anything beyond that.

Yikes! That sounds like quite the fall on your stairs! And right as your knee was just about all the way better, too! No fair 🙁

    • kilax says:

Yeah, I hope that is it too. And not something chronic that is starting, like hearing loss or arthritis, or who knows what!

RIGHT? My other knee was aching when I went to bed last night and I was not happy! I feel okay today, just beat up!

  6. Xaar says:

I’m so happy for Bobbi and Athena! It makes me smile thinking about it 🙂

I’m glad you were able to potentially save the lives of more frogs. That’s definitely good karma points in your bank.

I wonder why Data is avoiding the hardwood. Does he get enough traction on it? Is there a wax or something you could try on his paws for better grip? I’ve got “mushers secret” for the dogs- it helps for a ton of diffeeent ailments for their paws.

I hope you’re ok. Falling down the stairs is hella scary.

    • kilax says:

Me too! She has been sending me a daily Athena picture, which I enjoy.

Yes! So far, still no guys stuck in there.

He definitely doesn’t get enough traction, and slips. I wonder if he needs something like that. But why now?! We’ve lived in that house over two years! I wonder if something happened to his paws or if he is just spooked.

I still feel beat up and have a knot in my leg! I can still run though, so, eh 😉

  7. Shelley B says:

I love that you guys gave the frogs an escape route. You and Steven are good people. 🙂

Poor Data. It’s rough getting old. Our Kip had a lot of new quirks in the last year of his life; I sincerely hope that Data will soldier on and get back to his former self. He’s such a good boy.

I tripped going UP the stairs at my son’s new place several times, but didn’t fall going down…of course I was being VERY CAREFUL because I did not want to end up injured!

    • kilax says:

      Thank you 🙂

All those quips are scary, right? Like, is this it? Is this the beginning of him not being well? Thanks for saying that – I do hope he gets back to his former self too. I miss that guy.

Oh no!!! Did you trip and catch yourself? Or land? I am hoping you caught it since you said you didn’t end up injured!

  8. Stephany says:

Poor Data. Is he still avoiding the hardwood? It’s so hard when our pets get older and start doing weird stuff like this.

I love that you guys put up a little ramp for the frogs! Fingers crossed that this lets them escape more easily. 🙂

    • kilax says:

Yeah, it’s actually gotten worse. We’ve been out of town and my bestie Bobbi is checking on him and he’s been hiding from her and now been in the bathtub for the last few days. He’s eating and going to the bathroom, but I left a message with the vet. I’m concerned 🙁

Thanks! I hope they are using it! I felt horrible when I saw some didn’t make it!

  9. Mica says:

Oh my gosh, that fall sounds so scary and then so painful. I’m glad you didn’t get more hurt, but reading about those rug burns made me grimace!

Ahhh, the frogs! I’m glad they have a little ramp now–thank you for the happy ending to that story.

Have Data’s claws stopped retracting? As one of my cats got older, she lost the ability to pull her claws back in, so she’d get stuck in the rug and poke into the couch when she climbed up on it. I was wondering if maybe the floor feels different to him now or something?

    • kilax says:

And I still have the marks on my legs! What… almost two weeks later now?! Geesh. Sigh.

Me too! I guess we need nets or something over those things. Or ramps in all of them!

Hmm, I never thought about that. I should look at them. Thanks for the idea! The vet said he doesn’t have arthritis, but maybe it’s something odd like that!
