Random Thoughts Thursday 99

  • We haven’t been to a wedding since my snister’s in June 2014! And this year we’ve been invited to three!
  • Do you use the phrases “on point” and “clutch”- like, the trendy versions of them? In one week, I saw the phrase “on point” in five or more articles. So odd. These phrases are not part of my vocabulary. I hear clutch and think of a car. I hear on point and think of ballet (with an “e” at the end of “point”). Get with the times, Kim!
  • I took leave at work yesterday for my Alaska trip and it felt soooooooooooo good!
  • Yesterday the Dallas Marathon announced a new title sponsor – BMW – and opened early, limited, discounted registration! Funny, Gina and I were just talking about when registration would open earlier this week! I’d like to run that marathon again, but I’ll wait and do late registration if I do. I want to focus on getting in 5K shape (read: lean and strong) and see what happens from there. (The new logo is hella schweet though.)

  • I don’t think I’ll be updating my “Raced in / Run in Map” with any new states raced in this year, but I do think I will add some new states run in – Alaska, and maybe Ohio.

  • Data has taken to going outside on his own now. Sigh. He waits at the door and escapes! He never did this at the old house! Steven took this pic of him yesterday – Steven opened the front door to grab a package and Data jumped out through the gate! Luckily, Data doesn’t run when he gets out. Little turd.

  • A little crowdsourcing – any favorite, not-horrible bridal shower games you’ve played?

Maybe Ohio??? Where are you going? (and why?! LOL)

I hear “on point” a lot at work, in terms of assigning things to people. So-and-so is on point to do whatever. But clutch? Eww, no.

My family does a bridal shower game where we put different white powder ingredients (flour, powdered sugar, baking soda, cornstarch, etc.) in baby food jars and you have to guess what’s in them.

    • kilax says:

Ha ha, I had a feeling you’d ask about that! Cinci, for work 😉

What does that even mean… in that context? Like, they are ready to do it? So confused.

Oh! That’s fun! I like that. The less awkward, the better. Thanks for the idea! Do people get a list to choose from, or do they have to guess just by looking?

      • Anne says:

Yes, I must know about everyone’s Ohio travel plans 😉 But geez, Cincinnati is practically Kentucky (opposite side of the state from where I grew up).

Hmmm… I don’t think we have a list of choices, but most of us bake a lot, so that’s probably why. I think having a list (maybe with a couple extra choices thrown in) would probably be helpful!

I hadn’t heard anything about the new sponsor for Dallas, but I was out of town last weekend. I’m finding I’m out of the loop for those 4 days I was gone and I keep getting surprised with stuff going on.

    • kilax says:

They just announced it yesterday! 🙂 But if you aren’t on Facebook very much you probably missed it 🙂

  3. Alyssa says:

One game we played at my friends bridal party was we had to guess whether or not the bride and groom had the same answers to questions…think like “who is the better driver” or “who’s family is more crazy” or “does the bride like chocolate or potato chips more”. The MOH had asked the groom to answer the questions beforehand and the bride gave her answers at the shower.

Our dog also likes to escape but she also likes to run away when she gets out. She thinks it is a game. It’s not so bad when I am not carrying things because I can get out quickly but I have to lock her in another room if I am carrying things out to the car!

    • kilax says:

We were going to do something somewhat similar – where we ask my brother questions and his fiancee has to answer how she thinks he would. Your twist sounds fun. And like it could bring up some arguments ha ha ha!!!!

Oh man! I guess she comes back eventually?! I would NOT like that game!

      • Alyssa says:

It was a fun game! I feel like it gets people talking which is a good thing for a shower!

She doesn’t really come back…more like we have to chase her until she gets distracted enough by something else that we can grab her. The last time she escaped from my brother’s place a nice lady grabbed her collar when she approached so that was good. So yeah, we need to work on that!

        • kilax says:

Exactly! And it sounds like it will make people laugh 🙂

Oh geesh! What a naughty girl. I bet she will quit after training! Ha ha, or do it less often! 🙂

  4. I use “on point”, but I’ve never even HEARD clutch. What does it even mean? How odd.

Are you really not doing any races until your October 5K? Wow! Haha, I am not doing another marathon until next fall. It is nice to have a break from that kind of training.

    • kilax says:

What do you use on point for? Like, when something is awesome? Or someone has their sh*t together? I don’t think I quite get it. I think people use clutch to mean the second thing on this page? http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=clutch So confused.

I don’t have any races in mind until that 5K in October. I am doing the last day of RAGBRAI again. Things may pop up, but I am not looking for anything 🙂 I hope you enjoy your long run break!!!

  5. Hehehe now I want to poke fun at you for not being with it in terms of slang 😛 I use on point and clutch ALL the time. Allllll the time. I’ve also been known to modify clutch with super – “Getting that email when I did? SUPER clutch.” etc. Though I use super for…basically everything, because apparently my slang usage lives somewhere on the continuum between 1995 and 2016. Hahaha.

I wondered if you were going to do Dallas again this year! I think you need to do a race in Oklahoma so you can get rid of that gap in your map! Though I don’t even know what races there are in Oklahoma…? Or what there is in Oklahoma, period, aside from Oklahoma City haha. Not a state I know much about, that’s for sure!

    • kilax says:

Totally poke fun! I am at myself – like “WHY don’t I get this?!” So you use clutch in the terms of just what you needed 🙂 I find myself using super, too 😉 (Although I try to edit it out of my blog posts, along with “very” and other unnecessary words). And I use “hella” a lot. Ha ha.

I should do Oklahoma! I have only heard about the OKC races. 🙂 And how horrible it is to drive through Oklahoma on the way back to Dallas from Iowa. Ha ha.

  6. Kristina says:

Running in Alaska is just as awesome as racing there, I think! You’ve hit a lot of states – that’s super awesome. It looks like you could hit up Colorado though! 🙂
As for words/phrases that cycle through – I’ve NEVER used clutch or on point in a trendy way. I remember when “Just sayin'” was overused, and I heard a scathing take on the use of that expression. Maybe that’s why I’ve avoided too many hip/cool/trendy expressions?

  7. I’m so uncool when it comes to slang. I’ve heard other folks using “on point” but I’d never heard of “clutch.” It makes me think of those small purses that you hold in one hand! I did think about how I learn about new slang a lot from reading blogs, LOL.

Yay for your trip to Alaska!!! I can’t wait to see all of your pictures!!!

  8. Marcia says:

I was reading Women’s Health yesterday and came across “rando” 3x. Having a teen in the house means I can be obnoxious and pick up all the slang terms. My latest is “poppin” as in “your outfit is poppin!” Confession: I intentionally use the slang “wrong” in front of the teen and friends to induce eyerolls.

    • kilax says:

Poppin’! Ha! That is a new one! I have heard and used rando. I love that you use it wrong to embarrass them muah ha ha.

  9. Mica says:

I’ve noticed “on point” sneaking into my vocabulary, and I’m sure it will eventually drop out, kind of like “epic” was really big a few years ago.

We should get you in California so you can cross off that state on your list/map. 😉

My friend Jessica had a bridal shower game which was basically wedding- and relationship-related pictionary. There was a giant pad of paper on the wall, and she drew things off slips of paper and we guessed. I think I thought it was fun because it wasn’t really “shower-y.”

    • kilax says:

Yeah, I can’t imagine it staying around? I wonder where it even came from!

      YES!!!!!

That sounds really fun! And if I recall, my future SiL is horrible at drawing so that would make it even more fun, ha ha.

  10. Chaitali says:

I think I actually used the slang version of On Point for the first time the other day! I was describing someone’s suit.

  11. Jen2 says:

I don’t hear either of those catch phrases too often but I swear in the last week I’ve heard “dovetail” not in regard to furniture construction, at least 6 times. WTH?

  12. Alice says:

Oliver tries to escape through ANY door that is opened, EVER. It doesn’t matter if it’s to a closet or a bathroom he’s been in 192735165234 times; open door = IMMEDIATELY MUST RUN THROUGH IT. It’s been super great now that we have so many doors that go straight to the outdoors instead of our condo, which was just the interior hallway :-/

More shower game ideas: might work better if it’s an all-lady shower rather than co-ed, but for one last year we all wrote down a story or memory we had with / of the bride, and she read them each out loud and had to guess who had written it. Some were very sweet / sentimental, and some were hilarious and exposed some great / embarrassing stories about the bride 😀

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha! It’s an invitation to be mischievous, it seems?! Is Oliver loving the new place then?! It sounds like it!

Oh, that is fun! Hmmm. You guys gave me so many good ideas!!! Thank you!
