Alyssa’s Bridal Shower

By , May 31, 2016 5:39 am

We were in Iowa this weekend for my future sister-in-law Alyssa’s bridal shower!

I have Alyssa to thank for our upcoming trip to Alaska! She is from there, and she and my older brother decided to have the wedding near her hometown. I was really hoping that is where they would have it! I am so looking forward to visiting Alaska, and meeting more of Alyssa’s family!

160528AlyssaShower9

Alyssa moved to Iowa two years ago to live with my brother, and she immediately fit in with our family. We love having her here with us!

My sister and mom did all of the decorations, food, and prizes for the party and I was in charge of games. You probably remember me asking you guys for suggestions?

I wanted to make the games as least painful as possible (no wrapping the bride in toilet paper, ha ha), so they were mostly written – a “how well do you know the bride” quiz,

160528AlyssaShower8

a favorite memory with the bride, and a memory game. We had Alyssa walk around in this apron with kitchen stuff pinned to it, then had her leave the room and asked the guests questions about it. Only, the questions didn’t focus too much on the apron (“what color is Alyssa’s dress?,” “are her nails painted?”). Ha ha.

160528AlyssaShower4

We had a good time! We spent a lot of time talking about the wedding and all of our travel plans there and I am stoked to spend more time with everyone in Alaska!

Sisters – Amber, Christina, me and Alyssa

After the party, my mom, snister, Alyssa and I drove by a house that my brother and Alyssa put an offer in on. It’s outside off town, on a dead end road, on several acres! I totally get the appeal of that! I hope it all works out!

There was a bit of goofing around when we got back to clean up the party space. Christina and I were operating on little sleep, and Alyssa and I were operating on spiked punch, so, fun times! Ha ha!

160528AlyssaShower5 160528AlyssaShower6

Then we hung at my dad’s mom’s house, which is our usual get-together spot!

It was great to spend time together before our next gathering – in Alaska. EEEEEEEK!

A reason to be cautious of puddles

By , May 30, 2016 10:06 am

It finally happened! I finally fell off my road bike!

I’ve had my road bike since the end of summer in 2013 and have said multiple times that I’m surprised I haven’t fallen off it yet. I figured my first fall off would be a slow motion, coming to stop and not unclipping fast enough sort of thing – because that seems to be when most of the people I know fall off their bike.

No, mine was riding my bike through what looked like a long shallow puddle of water, only to find out that underneath the water was a layer of slimy mud.

160529longpuddle

It was a very fast skid and fall with no time to unclip. My ankles seemed to do that on their own when I hit the ground (ouch).

I immediately got up because I heard my dad fall behind me – he fell when he hit the brakes so he wouldn’t hit me! Ugh! Luckily, Will saw it all in time to put his feet down (he was on a recumbent) and get off his bike to walk it.

Then, just walking through the water was a challenge because of the slimy mud. Dad fell again! And ended up with the most impressive road rash:

160529dadscrape

You can barely see the scrapes on my shoulder – my shirt (and bra) got the worst of it (and I woke up sore from it, today):

160529kimtornshirt

(Funny thing – whenever I pick a jersey to ride I almost always think “I should wear something with sleeves because it provides more protection in case I fall!” But wanting to be comfortable (heat-wise) and not wanting a farmer’s tan always seems to win. So yeah, I had a tank on when I fell).

And this all happened less than a mile in to our ride! Ha!

We were saying there should have been a sign out – there are signs all over the rest of the trail for MUCH smaller puddles. And lots of signs to dismount, too.

160529dangersign

But really, if I saw that sign, and saw how low the water was, I would have had no idea it had a layer of slimy mud underneath and still probably tried to ride through. But we all know I won’t ever do that again! Ha! I was very cautious of puddles after that!

We continued on with our ride. I noticed my left handle bar was crooked from where I landed it on it (the guys helped me push it back in place), but my tires were spinning evenly and the gearing was all working, so I wanted to keep going! My hometown has a great paved trail system that is fantastic for road biking and I had really been looking forward to riding with Dad and Will!

160529DadWillandKim

The rest of the twenty miles were mostly without incident. We did come across a tree that was down on the trail (they had a nasty storm last week), but it was timed perfectly for Will to put in a bid on eBay, ha!

160529treedown

And then there was an incident where a goose thought I was riding too close to him and his family and flew in front of my bike and was flapping his wings in mid-air while I tried to ride forward… silly goose.

It was a fun ride, despite it starting with our falls! I can’t wait to ride a day of RAGBRAI with Dad and Will (and Will’s sister Julie, and Gina). Two months to go!

Notes:

  • I was really pissed off about surprise office days (my commute is two hours each way) messing up my workout schedule (and home life balance!) this week. Grow up, Kim.
  • We got our first real taste of summer weather this week – humid humid humid. If I feel that horrible when it’s in the 60s/70s and humid, how will I survive the 80s? Ha ha. I will adapt. I do each year.
  • On my Friday lunch run I was a bit suspicious of a car waiting on the end of my street (on my way back home). I stayed clear of him when I ran in, but he called out to me, “Do you have plenty of water?” Aww! Just a neighbor being friendly! I thought that was nice.
  • I went to my hometown this weekend and got a chance to ride with two of my RABGRAI compadres – Dad and Will! We had an interesting ride Sunday, but more on that, later!

Breakfast time!

By , May 28, 2016 7:09 am

We love that our neighbor’s ducks come over to visit. It’s like having our own ducks, part time. We’ve talked about having our own wildlife at some point, but that’s waaaaay down the road. (We’ve talked about having bee hives too! Yes – this vegan is not really a vegan – I will eat honey.)

Happy Saturday!

House Project: Pond Work (part i)

By , May 27, 2016 4:11 am

Who else is planning on spending time in the water on Memorial Day?

160526kiminpond

Ha ha!

I’ve mentioned our pond is a bit scummy and we need to clean it out. Our number one reason for getting it healthy is so that it’s not a mosquito (and filth) breeding ground, but it would also be great if it became something nice to look at!

Our long term plan is to clean out the brush on the left side of the photo below (and maybe the right, too!), and do some landscaping there for a seating area. For now, we’ll begin to clean that area out so we can put in power for a fountain. (Major landscaping will wait a year or two.)

160526pondpano

We’re currently testing a fountain proof of concept, made of a rubbermaid box with holes drilled in it, an old sump pump, and pvc pipe. We wanted to see if the sump pump was powerful enough to move the water around. The pond water needs to be circulated via the fountain, because there is no water flow there, and sitting water is bad news.

160526fountainprototype

Steven is still figuring out what the final design will be. He’s doing a lot of research and is willing to try out different things to figure out what works best for our pond. And he likes making homemade stuff, too. He was happy with proof of concept and got some good ideas from it.

And I had fun playing with it.

160526prototypeandKim

Ha, funny thing – I had to “create” a proof of concept type thing for training at work this week. Yeah, I found out Monday (only because a coworker text me – I was off for the day) that we all needed to be in the office for three days of training Tuesday-Thursday. After that much training last week, and a hella busy personal life schedule, I am so freakin’ spent and beat down and frustrated. Anyway.  This was WAY more fun than what we did in class.

Since I was in the pond, I also got some sticks/dead trees out. Hopefully I won’t find them all floating in the middle of the pond tomorrow.

160526logstack

This particular tree (below) makes me laugh. It floats all over the pond depending on the water level. When I’m away, Steven will take pictures of it in different locations to let me know it’s on the move again.

160526gianttree

It better not find its way back in! I bet Freddie and Bill will miss it, but hopefully they’ll prefer a cleaner pond over a nasty old log.

I forget it’s there

By , May 26, 2016 12:59 pm

I checked the front of my outfit this morning

160526frontofoutfit

but forgot to check the back

160526backofoutfit

Oops! My tattoo is showing!

Ha. IDGAF. Also, my boss was all “I love your dress! And insert coworker’s name had told me you have a tasteful tattoo – I can see it!” So I showed it to her. And she could read it (and liked it). Yay! (Although it elicited a response from another coworker – “You runners and your tattoos.” Huh? Ha).

Funny thing, a few months ago, I got out of the shower and was drying off in front of the mirror and turned around and gasped! A spider was on my back! But just after coming out of the shower? Huh?! That no make sense.

Oh. No. That’s my tattoo. That I forgot I have. Ha ha ha.

But the spider suspicion is not too ridiculous. We’ve had LOTS of interesting insects in our house. Hopefully, having replaced some of the rotted out doors will help with that! (Although we now have carpenter ants drilling holes in to our soffits to lay eggs… and a huge carpenter ant issue… fun times in the country!)

Repetitive

By , May 25, 2016 6:37 am

You know who is really courteous to runners (at least where I live)?

FedEx Freight drivers.

My safest (traffic-wise) route takes me on a country road back to a one+ mile sidewalk next to FedEx Freight. I worried at first they’d be annoyed I was running near (not on) their facility, but they’re always so nice to me! Ha, maybe they are annoyed and are just really good at hiding it.

160525run

photo along the route this am

This is my go-to route for runs under six miles, so… almost all my runs lately. Thankfully those drivers are so friendly!

(The dog on the first house I pass? Not so much! I blame that on him being chained up all the time though. Poor thing!)

Let’s go to the Pyramid House!!!

By , May 24, 2016 7:17 am

Several times before she got here, Mica said to me, “I hope we get to see Peoples when we visit!”

No Peoples sightings. The coyotes stopped yowling when she came in to my room to hear them. The bison weren’t out (they live on another street). The ducks didn’t visit until Monday morning (probably because our pond is so scummy right now – we’re about to start working on that), and didn’t stay long when they did.

Sigh. We just had birds, squirrels, chipmunks and frogs (and horses, but not on our property, ha).

Nature was mocking me!

Then, of course, this guy shows up Monday night, after she left:

160523coon

And another one visited our bedroom balcony in the middle of the night! I’m not sure if either was Peoples, though. The one in the photo has different markings, and looks slimmer. I wish he would have visited when she was here!

Luckily, the animal portion of the trip was the only bust. Well, that and me thinking their train to the city came later, and getting them there with a minute to spare but not being able to get on the train because the train came early and blocked the track crossing. I felt like such an arsehole (and they were completely cool about it). Moving on.

Mica and Harrison are in Chicago for a long visit and spent Saturday night through Monday afternoon with us. I know Mica through blogging, and Steven and I spent time with her and Harrison in 2013 and hit it off. And we hadn’t seen them since then (but Mica and I text most days)! I was greatly looking forward to chilling and catching up, but also, showing them some of the stuff around our house.

Like… the Pyramid House!

160522pyramidhouse3

I totally forgot about this place until I drove by it on moving day with my Mom in February. And I showed it to my snister when she visited in April. When I emailed Mica and asked if we should check it out she responded enthusiastically “OMG YESSSSSSSSS.”

(I love Mica’s enthusiasm for things. She’s a lot of fun to be around.)

So basically, this family was interested in pyramids, and the dad was always building small ones around the house (to test their powers…). When it became time to build a new house in the late 70s, they decided to build it on the land he had for his construction business, in the shape of a pyramid. They didn’t intend for it to be more than their home, but people were so interested in it, they opened it to the public in the 80s and have been giving tours to some extent since then.

The house itself is very dated (and a bit tacky with the combined Egyptian/country/floral themes).

160522pyramidhouse5

160522pyramidhouse4

The most interesting part is the exterior – they’ve gone through many different surface materials and different methods to try to make the house appear to be gold. And they’ve had many issues – with the quality of the materials, the materials’ reaction to snow and ice, and with people complaining about them (being too shiny).

160522pyramidhouse1

They also had an interesting response from the county after building this fifty five foot Ramses II statue… they were a bit over the county height limitation. It’s actually been raised to sixty feet since it was built so they’re okay now. (I only know the county height limit because we had to research it when we thought we needed to built a wireless tower on our property – at ninety feet.)

160522pyramidhouse2

The father who started the pyramid interest is no longer alive, but the mom still lives there, and the youngest son gives tours. The tour is a bit of a sales pitch – for their mineral water they have on site, their beer made with the mineral water, trips to Egypt, and their conference/reception area. Ha ha. And don’t forget their HUGE gift shop.

But the tour was interesting. In a nosy, peering in to other people’s lives sort of way. I like that it’s unique, and that it makes them happy. And it sounds like a very interesting childhood, to be constantly working on these Egyptian themed house projects with your parents!

After our tour, we hit up a local ice cream shop we’ve been wanting to try. Then drove by the decommissioned Zion Nuclear Power Plant,

160522nuclearpowerplant

and went to Illinois Beach State Park.

160522beach 160522beachshadowselfie

These are all parts of our new town that I’ve been wanting to explore and it was fun to do it with Mica and Harrison!

We also went where we do with every guest – El Famous Burrito!!! And caught up on Game of Thrones so we could watch the newest episode with them Sunday night. It was fun to talk about the show with other people who watch it! (And so weird to watch it the same day it aired!)

And it was really fun to catch up, in general. There are so many stories that are hard to share over electronic communication, and it was a treat to do that face to face.

And we asked them a zillion questions about San Francisco (where they live). I’d love if that was a trip we could make happen next year! We shouldn’t go three years without seeing each other again, and it’s our (overdue) turn to visit!

I actually said that

By , May 23, 2016 10:34 am

When I called the vet last week to make Data’s annual appointment, they asked if he’d be wearing a bow tie for his visit.

“Actually,” I said, “I knitted him a long tie this winter, so if it’s cool enough, he’ll be wearing that!”

What in the actual F, Kim?! Did you seriously just say that? As in, you said that, seriously? Not as a joke.

Sigh. I did.

Since the vet knows I am 100% cat lady (and probably finds it amusing), I should have Steven wear his matching tie to the appointment, too! Ha ha ha.

But I don’t think I’ll make time to knit something for myself so I can match the boys. Drat!

Notes:

  • Last week when I was leaving for a run at work, the security guard asked me “You running five?” I said “Yep! And maybe speedwork too!” (<— that didn’t happen). This week, he said “You running five?” I told him yes, maybe six, and he asked “what was that thing you were talking about doing last week while you run?” It took me awhile to remember speedwork! But I explained it to him and he sounded interested. I’ll have to ask if he gave it a try the next time I see him! I like how nice the security guards are at my building. Another guy and I used to chat above movies all the time. I can’t get too attached though, because they get rotated to different buildings based on seniority.
  • I’m so thankful my body is on autopilot. I get up at 3:45 am on Fridays to teach. Somehow, my alarm was turned off for this Friday… but I still woke up at 3:45 am, thinking “Isn’t this when I am supposed to get up?” Eek, that would have been bad if I kept sleeping!
  • I rode my bike on Thursday after not riding it since Monday the previous week! I thought it would feel horrible but it felt so great for my legs. I’ve still only ridden it outside one time this year though!
  • I listened to a podcast for most of my long run on Saturday. I forgot how I used to do that. And now I remember one of the reasons I stopped – it slows me down quite a bit and takes a lot of my energy to focus on what they’re saying! It was a nice change of pace (har har) though.
  • Anne’s birthday was Saturday, and we boxed, ran, and ate lunch together! What a fun treat to get to spend so much of her birthday with her!
