- On Monday, Steven and I were outside filling up the bird feeders and when we got back to the garage I noticed an animal in the yard. Holy crap, it was Data! We accidentally left the door in to the garage open and he got out and was eating grass. Eek! I am happy he didn’t stray far (or run from me when I went to retrieve him).
- Data has it rough at the new house, chasing the sun around all day. So much movement!
- Last year at work, we were given a choice between receiving a monetary bonus or a time off bonus. The worth of each option was equal. I chose time off, since we have a long vacation coming up in June… then found out the next day that our close costs were WAY more than we thought, and that we’d have to pay in a lot on our taxes. Sigh. I felt stupid for making that choice, for a few months, but now? I am happy I did. The money stuff mostly worked out, and now I don’t have to stress about having enough time off for that trip in June, while I take afternoons off here and there.
- This article (pdf here) about ConBody gym in Manhattan is interesting! Coss Marte is an ex-convict who was having trouble finding work after serving time. After a passer-by asked to join him and his friends in a workout that he developed in prison, he thought to start his own workout studio to teach his “prison-style boot camp,” regain his economic freedom, and employ other ex-cons who are struggling to find work. The studio has been very successful with 300 to 400 people a week taking one of the 40 classes offered. Great story of someone making a comeback and interesting workout idea – whole body movements you can do in a small space!
- The mention of “boot camp” style workouts got me thinking about how a lot of those are outdoors (although not ConBody), so I guess that means no music? Music is a big tool in the classes I teach – I wonder what it would be like to teach a class without it!
- This has really been a bit of a sh*t week for me. Stupid stuff going on at work, stupid stuff going on with our contractors, people being stupid… ugh. I hope things turn around.

I’m sorry everything has been stupid – weeks like that suck.
That would be so scary about Data but I love all the sun pics!
Regretting decisions you already made is a tough spot. It’s never productive but it’s hard to let go too. Glad everything worked out so you don’t need to regret! 🙂
Thanks 🙂
It’s so cute to see him follow the sun around! And to snorgle his warm body. Ha!
Me too! I don’t usually regret things … ha, so I was feeling really uncomfortable!
Glad Data didn’t run off!!
That would be a hard choice..but I probably would have chosen time off also. Sometimes a break is much more needed than money.
That was my thinking, too!
We had a cat who’d eat grass, then come inside and throw it up. Thanks, honey!
Allie chases the sun beam too, but at least it mostly stays in the bedroom. She just has to be up in her condo, then move to the floor.
Yeah, I am surprised we haven’t found Data’s throw up spot, yet!
Sorry you’re having a shit week…I hope things get better soon! Love that story about Coss Marte. Good for him!!
I would have chosen the time off too. We are such millennials, valuing our work-life balance over the $$ ;-).
Data!!! Get your butt back in that house!!! LOL. I’ll never forget when we came home from our cruise in August and as we approached the house, we looked up and Bernie was screaming at us…FROM THE ROOF! That little sucker clawed through the window screen!
Thanks 🙂
Totally. And I think it’s okay to value work-life balance. I have a lot of friends who feel like they don’t have any in their job and it sucks!
WHAT?! HA! The roof! Man, good thing you came home right then!
Oh Dates!! What’s up with that!? I’m so glad you were able to scoop him up before he ran off.
I love stories like the ConBody gym. It’s awesome when folks can turn their lives around and do something positive. I probably would have also taken the time off instead of the money. Sometimes days off are just what you need to relax or get stuff done. Money can’t buy that if you don’t have time.
Sorry this week has been shit for you. Hopefully it can only get better from here.
Me too! Little stinker!
Exactly – time IS more important to me than money… most of the time 🙂
Thanks! I hope so, too!
When we were in CA a couple of weeks ago I noticed lots of boot camp-type classes going on in parks/near the pier when I was out running. Most of them had a boom box.
Sorry for the shit week. It seems to be in the air lately. :/
Ahh, cool! Doing strength to music really helps me, so I was wondering how that all worked!
Ugh! Hope you aren’t having a super shitty week!
Awww, Data. He looks extra cozy in the late afternoon picture 🙂 I’m glad he didn’t explore too much while he was outside!
I think there’s something cool about working out outdoors (especially this time of year, when people are itching to get out and enjoy nice weather) that makes up for the lack of music. My old gym had some outdoor bootcamp classes that I thought were a lot of fun! They were similar to the Kettlebell & Go class. We’d run to a nearby park, do some strength moves, run some more, etc.
Sorry your week has sucked! I hope it gets better! At least tomorrow is your Friday?
I’m glad he didn’t, too! I’ve been trying to take him out a bit so he is familiar with the house, in case he got out! I’m happy his hunger distracted him.Ha.
You’re right – if you move around a lot you probably don’t notice there is no music! 🙂
Thanks! Yes! Happy the week is almost over 🙂
Sorry about the bad week 🙁 I hope things turn around! Data sure does look he’s found a cozy place in the sun for all times of day!
Thanks! They will!
Ha ha, Data has. It’s so cute!
Stupid weeks are stupid. Here’s hoping for a better week next week!
Thank you for sharing that article about the ConBody gym. So interesting!
I used to do outdoor workouts, and I had music at times. I had a speaker that I hooked up to my phone but I’ve also seen bluetooth options, as well. I found, though, that the elements were enough distraction. We also moved so much around the spaces and the workout was more dynamic that music was tertiary.
Thanks! 🙂
You’re welcome!
Good point! If you keep things going, people wouldn’t even notice there is no music!
Hang in there this week is almost done!
A class with no music…I would have a tough time, I love music!
It is not easy to find an honest living after you have been to prison, so kudos to him for being creative.
Thanks 🙂
I thought so too, but other commenters were pointing out that the constant change of pace outside keeps things going without the music 🙂
Oh, scary! I’m glad you got Data back safe and sound!
Hang in there with your stupid week – it’s been a stupid week all around and hopefully today will be better.
Data looks like he is settling into his new home – glad that he didn’t wander, though!
That money vs. time decision or dilemma is tough, but it sounds as though it has worked out. And you’ll really enjoy having that time!
Glad to see Data has taken over all of the sunny spots in the house.
I’m glad Data didn’t give you more of a scare by running away or you discovering he was missing and frantically searching the house. Be safe, Data! Bodger also loves finding the sun patches in our house. He looks at us with such indignation if there’s no sun, like it’s our fault.
That gym is so interesting and a really good story. (Also, I’m relieved to see something positive about working out in NYC, instead of articles about say, soul-cycle with its “see and be seen participants.)
I used to run by people doing workouts in the park, and they definitely were listening to music with a gigantic boombox (Is that even what they’re called anymore?), so it can be done!
Since I wrote that, the construction dudes let Data out twice in one day! To their credit, Data was waiting to escape. But he stays close to the house and just eats grass 🙂
IT IS YOUR FAULT!!!!
Ha ha. I just heard about someone going to the gym to meet people and… sigh. I didn’t get it. But! Maybe that is why some people work out – to be seen and meet people?
Cool! I wonder if that is what they are still called!
