Does this count as my green for the day?

As a kid, I would worry about getting pinched on St. Patrick’s Day if I didn’t wear green. So to this day, I try to have some green in my outfit for the holiday.

Does this necklace count?! (Edited to add: one row is green)

I didn’t even know what the pinching tradition came from until I asked Google this morning:

The tradition was popularized by Irish immigrants in the United States, who believed that wearing green made you invisible to leprechauns, fairy creatures who would pinch anyone they could see. Pinching those who didn’t wear green was meant to remind them that leprechauns could sneak up at any time.

Wait. Does this mean leprechauns are bad?! I thought they would lead me to a pot of gold?!

As a kid, I did not know that St. Patrick’s Day is a drinking holiday! Geesh! I didn’t even really figure it out until college was almost over (I know, I know – I only went to a bar once in college, and only to a few parties my freshman year).

I was out in Chicago on spring break my final year of college and had a Saturday job interview. I took the train to the city for the interview. That Saturday was St. Patrick’s Day. And riding the train (and I am sure it’s this way in any major city on this holiday) was quite the experience. But I got the job (and learned to avoid taking the train the Saturday around St. Patrick’s Day). Ha!

Isn’t your necklace blue? Happy Sy Patrick’s Day! 🍀☘🍀☘

I didn’t wear green to the office today, but hopefully being Irish counts. I wore my pale skin and freckles! 😉

I think leprechauns were mischievous, but not really bad. But I’m pretty sure Terry and I watched a movie about an evil leprechaun at some point, since that seems like the kind of thing we’d watch.

I remember going out for St. Patrick’s Day once in college. My friends and I went to Buffalo Wild Wings and had green Miller Lite. It’s definitely a lot bigger in Chicago LOL

  3. The whole pinching thing is crazy. I donno about where it came from..that story sounds a little made up 😁 in stories lephrachans are seen as tricksy and spiteful. I’d imagine Chicago is quite crazy, I always avoided Dublin then as its a nightmare to get around. Happy St. Patrick’s Day–Lá Fhéile Pádraig!

I was hoping you’d comment and set us all straigth!

Hmm, I didn’t know they were spiteful! I need to pay attention to fairy tales better! 🙂

      Happy St. Patrick’s Day! 🙂

Try being in London on St. Patrick’s Day. I saw people up at 5am (jet lag for me) and I knew they hadn’t been to bed yet.

  5. I forgot green this year, like I do EVERY YEAR. You’d think I’d be better at remembering since it’s also my brother’s birthday, LOL.

All three strands of that necklace look blue to me, but I’ll take your word for it that one of them is green. Anyway, I really like the color and how it pops against your black/white shirt.

I forgot today was St. Patrick’s Day! (Not big in the south). You’d think I’d remember because I was in Walmart yesterday with a green sweater on and an old lady yelled at me across the store “You need to wear that tomorrow!!”. That’s a pretty necklace, but I don’t seen green either.

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha! That is funny! So are you wearing it today, too?

Yeah, guess my selfie didn’t grab the colors! And I didn’t take the time to edit it in photoshop, ha ha.

I tried for half a second this morning but gave up when I couldn’t find anything green in my wardrobe. I even wore the race shirt at the St. Patrick’s race I did earlier this month because I had no green running clothes. Clearly I need to add that color to my wardrobe 🙂

    • kilax says:

I don’t have a lot of green, either! Just one kind of green tank I could wear to work, and one long sleeved fluorescent green running top. Guess we need to go shopping 😉

Totes counts! 😉 I think the whole pinching thing is super lame. Anyways, there’s always like an 87% chance I’ve got something green on other than my green Irish eyes 🙂

    • kilax says:

Mauh ha ha. It wasn’t lame when I pinched Steven this morning. Okay, maybe lame to him. Fun for me. HA!!!

You look fab in green!!!! 🙂

  9. Pete B says:

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I have never heard of the no-green-pinch thing. Sounds like some creepy dude made that one up! 🙂

  10. kapgar says:

Pinching just means that they’re mischievous, not bad.

And that looks more teal or sea foam, not true green. You get pinched!

  11. Shelley B says:

That is not Irish green, girlie…pinch pinch pinch. 😉

I’m not wearing green, but I’m safely staying home today…otherwise, I’d be sporting my bright green race t-shirt!

    • kilax says:

Darnit! I didn’t know there was a RULE on what shade of green! HA!

You better hope no one knocks on the door! 😛

  12. karen says:

I am not sure that made the green cut lol
I forgot what day it was and was in notta…
I drank a lot of green beer though which resulted in my need to hit the reset button today lol

  13. martymankins says:

The pinching thing was done to me by many kids who never knew the reason for it, only to be mean when I was a kid.

I never celebrated the drinking part of St. Patrick’s Day until I was in my mid to late 30’s.

  14. Erin says:

Green Beer Day was a thing where I went to college but I never really participated. But, trust me, everyone campus knew about it! We even had professors threaten to give pop quizzes if people showed to class drunk or skipped class entirely.

I noticed that almost everyone at my office was wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day but no one actually talked about it.

  15. Mica says:

Ugh, St. Patrick’s Day! I hated it when I was younger because I’d get pinched for not wearing green and because it reminded me that I was different (i.e., very obviously had no Irish heritage). And then I hated it even more once I found out it was a drinking holiday (like you, I had no idea until college).

I’m kind of a St. Patrick’s day grouch (ya think??) and refuse to wear green on it now because I feel that it has inconvenienced me so much over the years….
