The most exciting thing about the new house

By , January 23, 2016 7:05 am

(I mean, beyond the house itself, the location, the privacy, and so on…)

Is picking out new appliances!

Some people seemed surprised we left our appliances at our townhome. We liked the appliances we had there, but we were excited to pick out new ones – which we completed last night!

We spent a few nights this week looking at display models to make sure we liked what we found online. The hardest thing to find to look at was the fridge – most of the fridges in stores have a freezer bottom and french door top. We want a freezer bottom and single door top, which we finally got to see last night. Now we can place our order after we close! Yay! Shiz is getting real!

We’re only getting one dishwasher and one fridge – I’m just showing them opened and closed in the image. The kitchen appliances are KitchenAid, the hood is Broan, and the washer and dryer are LG (I must have never posted about it, but we had to buy a new clothes washer in early March last year and got this LG model (in white) and really liked it!).

It doesn’t show up in the image above, but all the KitchenAid appliances have knurled handles with red caps on the end. Fance!

Not on our list of appliances to buy? A microwave. We never had one at our townhome. Our rental has one and I’ve been using it, but I’m not in love with it. However, Christina gave me this schweet neck wrap that you can heat up in the microwave*, which I am in love with, so maybe I need a microwave just for that. Ha!

Late night picture I text to my snis!

Still left to pick out (but not an appliance) is a bathtub. The home has two bathrooms, and one is only a half bath so we’re having a bathtub/shower added to it. Yay! Having a bath is essential for me – that’s the only way I can really warm up after some of my cold runs (a steaming hot shower and hot cup of tea don’t seem to cut it!).

*Or cool in the fridge, which I haven’t tried yet

I didn’t realize that many people don’t include the appliances with their home listing? I live in IL too and generally expect to have appliances included when I look at real estate listings.

They seemed to be included in most of the other houses we looked at! The house we are buying only had the dishwasher there, though. I think everyone just decides what works for them 🙂

I didn’t have a microwave in most of my city apartments. My brother visited once and sent me one because my not having one annoyed him LOL, but that one broke pretty quickly so I tossed it during a move. All of this to say, when our new place didn’t have a microwave, I was fine with that because I never use it anyway. But Terry could only make it a few days without one. We got a surprisingly nice one for about $60 at Tar-jay-jay (if you want a cheap recommendation).

Love the red w&d!!!! I meant to say that the other day.

Ha! Ha ha ha! That is so funny he sent you one! Please send me that link to the Tar-jay-jay one! The one that matches our set of KitchenAid stuff is way too $$. If we get one, it will be low cost.

      Thanks!!! 🙂

We were able to pick out our appliances for our last place, and it was really nice to get what you wanted. I loved my stove, especially (and miss it on a regular basis). Also, we are a no microwave family too. But when I was doing PT, they would heat up these wraps for different parts of the body and that was wonderful! So, I see what you mean about the neck wrap.

    • kilax says:

Did you get to pick them out at your new place? 🙂

The heat wrap is amazing! I wonder if there is any other way to heat it up, safely. Probably not, ha ha!

      • Kristina says:

Ha ha – No we did not! Although the appliances are okay. Not the best (again, I still mourn the loss of our oven/stove), but a lot of places here seem to have electric stoves/ovens which surprises me.
By the way – have fun picking out the bathtub!

I was just going through some photos from my summer in Korea, and I had one of someone moving out of a high-rise apartment. In Korea, you always take your appliances with you, and the big things get moved out on a motorized cart on a track between your apartment and the ground (so, like, 15 floors up). It looked quite dangerous, but I guess they knew what they were doing.

I was so amazed when I stayed with you and Steven and found out you don’t have a microwave. We use ours a lot, but I did start heating some things up on the stove like you do: namely sauces and pizza. (Pizza is soooo much better reheated in the oven or on the stove!)

What is the reasoning behind your preference for a single-door and freezer bottom? Now that I think about it, I’ve only ever had a single door and a top freezer in my homes/apartments. I’ve never had the “luxury”/responsibility of choosing new appliances. I’d probably get overwhelmed and just pick what I have already…

    • kilax says:

Wow! Better than taking it down stairs/in the elevator, I guess!

YES! Leftover pizza is the BEST heated up on the stove! Actually… I just like all things heated up that way. But I am using the microwave to make oatmeal (which I prefer on the stove but now I am being lazy!).

We have a double door at the rental and you have to open both doors to get stuff out of the drawers in the fridge anyway, so two doors is twice the work (unless you remember exactly what shelf/door something is in, which you would). And the bigger reason is that the single door ones have longer uninterrupted door storage, which we’d like for our condiments 🙂

  5. Ah, appliances! One day I’ll make it in life and have a dishwasher…….maybe big time and I’ll have a washer and dryer – the NYC dream! But I love the red – I hope that’s the color you got!

When we bought our house down in Champaign it only came with a (really old) stove/oven, a (really old) microwave/hood and a dishwasher. We had to provide the washer/dryer and the fridge. My parents actually had a spare fridge that they gave us so we ended up not having to buy one and we had already bought a used washer/dryer when we lived in a rental house. The only thing I’ve ever picked out myself was a stove/range and a microwave/hood.

Oh, and toilets. Never done a bathtub, though!
