Random Thoughts Thursday 81
- We’ve been in total limbo with the new house purchase. We know it’s moving forward, but we’re constantly getting new information as inspections are (now) completed (this week’s: “Hey, you need a new septic tank!”) and we don’t have a close date. All typical home purchase stuff, right? But then throw in the fact that the house we’re renting is under contract to close on February 5th, and things get a little interesting. Ha. Surprisingly, I am very calm about all this. I’m someone who typically struggles with the unknown, but with this, I’ve been okay. Steven and I are working really well together as a team (going through this has brought us closer together), and I know we can get done whatever we need to. We’ll make it work. I have faith in us. (And I hope that by saying we don’t have a close date, the universe will do what it usually does, and provide me one, making me a liar).

- When we took Steven’s dad and brother to see the house, I realized that I was wrong about something. There isn’t one ceiling fan… there’s FOUR!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! Sorry, Data.

- And for all my complaining about the rental house kitchen (and other things that I haven’t mentioned here, but you’ve probably heard if you know me in real life, ha), we’re so much happier in the rental than we were in our townhome. We felt on edge in our townhome for many years, because of noise and other disturbances. It’s peaceful where we’re living right now, and it’s wonderful. We’re not stress-free, but THAT stress is gone.
- This post is all house, house, house. And it continues. Our new home is in (the unincorporated part of) a town where ,when we tell people we are moving there, they say “you’re moving WHERE?” with cat making home alone face when you tell them… and not in a good way. Ha. And yesterday, I was buying a train pass to get WAY out there, and the agent was like “All the way to there?” Yep! Ha.
- One more house thing – it’s so weird to think of someone living in our old townhome! I hope they’re liking it!
- Buah ha ha. I spoke too soon when I wrote this post about being back at knitting and remembering everything. I apparently forgot how to read, because I made the hat way too short, despite having made this pattern before! Oops! I am hoping it will fit the head of Bobbi’s youngest daughter. Luckily, I had purchased two skeins of the yarn and finished hat #2, on skein #2, last night. Ha.
Hat #1 – At least the yarn is making it turn out cute!
Hat #2 – this one may be TOO tall. Ha. I will get it right, eventually.
- My older brother is getting married in Alaska in June (!!!!!!), and Steven and I, and most of my immediate family, purchased our flights for the trip on Sunday!!!! YAY!!! There aren’t any races where I will be, but I obviously plan to run there. Big thanks to my parents for covering the flight costs until we can pay them back after we close on our house (because the close costs about a zillion dollars).

Is your hat yarn Schachenmayr Lova, by chance? It looks like a hat that I made last year. Regarding the depth, I still either misjudge, or mistrust myself when knitting hats fairly often, so I prefer to err on the side of “too long” because you can always fold up the brim to wear it shorter if necessary.
Gates to your new house?? So fancy! Can’t wait to see everything soon. 🙂
It’s actually Lion Brand Wool-Ease. The Schachenmayr brand looks nice! I will have to keep an eye out for it! I was thinking the same thing too – just fold it… or smash down the top! Ha!

Ooh… a trip to Alaska combined with a wedding sounds amazing! Good luck with the rest of the house stuff. It will be so worth it once you’re in there.
Yes! I was so hoping I would get to go there to see my future SiL’s hometown someday!!!! So happy they are getting married there!
It will be! I am looking forward to setting things up at the new house… over a long period of time. Ha.
Buying a house and moving is the worst! Good for you for staying calm! I am so jealous that you are going to Alaska. We have friends that are working there this summer and we are trying to figure out if we can afford to go visit in August after I graduate.

There’s definitely something to be said for living somewhere peaceful and where you don’t have to worry as much 🙂 After years of city living, it’s nice to not hear traffic, sirens, etc. all the time. That’s the first thing my entire family has said about our new place. Aside from the Metra (which we’ve gotten used to), it’s so quiet!

Yeah, it’s funny. People are SHOCKED when you want to move further from the city. I remember years ago when a coworker accosted me about why Steven and I don’t live in the city. Because we don’t want to? LOL. But yeah, we’ve talked about people thinking the way they do things should be the way everyone does things before 😉
Well to be honest, when I was younger (like early 20’s) and had just moved here, I did wonder why people my age lived in the suburbs! But then I spent all my time in the ‘burbs anyway (as a workaholic), so living in the city at that point didn’t really make a ton of sense. But yeah, each to their own – everyone should do what they want and what makes the most sense for them!
Wow, Alaska? That’s super cool! Do they just like that location, or is it home for someone?
House stuff sounds so stressful, but I’m relieved to hear that, unlike seemingly every episode of “House Hunters,” they haven’t found that your house is on a pit of radon. (Nor is it a short sale.)

When I was a kid, I thought the process of buying a house involved browsing listings in a newspaper, going to see the houses you liked, picking your favorite one, and then telling the real estate agent you wanted the house, and that was that. I had NO IDEA how complicated it is to purchase one until my friends started buying, and oh. my. gosh. It makes me want to rent forever. Hahaha.
I didn’t get it, either. Even though we owned our townhome, I wasn’t a huge part of the buying process. It sucks. Ours is even more complicated since we are getting a construction loan. Blah. Rent forever! Ha!
Oh man! Short sales suck! At least you’re onto inspection. We got a new negotiator with the bank this week, and that’s all we’ve been told. Really!? It took six months to just get a new person? Ugh. Thank goodness our buyer is being patient and worst case our sale falls through and we have to re-list. But man, waiting is tough! I’m like you though, I’m kind of over letting it stress me out. My guess is we’ll get approval the day I go back to work! 😉
Ours is a foreclosure, and the reason it’s all up in the air is because of the type of loan we are getting and us waiting to hear from the lender – they can’t give us any sort of schedule since the type of loan is so much more involved. Ugh.
I can’t believe it took six months to get that info! Did it make you want to get a new bank… if that wasn’t so much dayum work?!!!! I bet that IS when you will hear back. Typical!
You are being so patient with the house thing! Better than I’d be handling it for sure. It will all be worth it in the end though. Glad you’re out of that noisy townhome and headed somewhere peaceful!
Happy 2016! This is super late and I’ve been totally disconnected. But – wow, buying and selling a house/apartment/whatever is such a complicated and stressful experience. Good luck as you deal with the waiting game.

Yes! People seem bummed for me when I tell them there aren’t any races, but I am just so happy to get to go, at all!
Buying a home is such an awful and complicated experience. I do not understand why it has to be so complicated. Oh, and then to refinance? Ugh!
Alaska! Fun. Never been there but would like to. I think the Mayor’s Half Marathon is at the end of June.

Go you being calm about the house thing! I remember when we bought (and had to get a new septic tank) I cried all the freaking time. I’d like to think I’d be better now but I don’t know.
Also, congrats to your brother and his fiancee! I’m also super happy that your family is able to go to Alaska for the wedding. What a great adventure!
