Random Thoughts Thursday 71

  • All I had to do was whine about the Mexico postcards last week and they started showing up for people over the weekend! I think everyone got theirs… even my younger brother and his wife, despite the stamp falling off. Ha ha, funny thing about the stamps – they say $13.50 on them, which is in pesos. But my dad’s mom didn’t know that asked if I paid $13.50 in USD to send it. Hee hee. Nope! It sure is confusing though! Here is the postcard I sent to our house:

  • I’m getting my pre half marathon massage today! Woo hoo! I guess there is something I am as excited about as picking out a balloon, ha ha. My right glute needs some major attention and I can’t wait to have it worked out. Ahhh. Wouldn’t it be awesome to get a sports massage every week?!
  • Random question for you –Β how do you input contacts in your cell phone? Manually? Or do you upload them from something like Google contacts? I’m curious, because Steven and I have been using Google contacts for quite a few years, but we also know people who manually enter contacts in to their phone (which seems like a lot of damn work).
  • I heard something in a podcast about a 30-day exclamation point fast. Um, what?! No gracias! I can’t imagine not using them. Ha. I totally overuse them, along with the ellipsis. Well, here on the blog and in personal correspondence. Not at work.
  • I had a dream last night that I snuck out of a family Christmas celebration to see the new Star Wars film. Ha. Very unlikely. It comes out on December 18th so I will have seen it before Christmas. And… with either family, there’d be people wanting to go see it with me!
  • I met someone in person (for the first time) yesterday that I’ve been talking to on the phone for years and they looked nothing like I expected them to. That kind of threw me! Ha ha.

#5 sounds like a plan to me. Evening showing? LOL

  2. I think giving up exclamation points for 30 days would be harder for me than giving up sweets for all of Lent πŸ˜› I probably overuse exclamation points, but I think they’re important for conveying meaning! I also think when people don’t use exclamation points that their writing sounds angry and cold, and I don’t want to sound angry OR cold (unless I actually am angry and want to be cold haha).

  3. Alyssa says:

I’ve had to put all my contacts in my phone by hand before and it was terrible! Now I love that I can just sign into google and all my contacts just show up!

My mom is getting a new cell phone this week (upgrading from a track phone with no data) and they can’t port her old numbers over so she will have to do it by hand. But this weekend we counted her contacts and she only has like 43! So it won’t be that bad. I bet I have closer to 200 contacts!

    • kilax says:

Is she going to a smart phone? Steven’s dad just did and had to put everything in by hand. He said he recommended taking the time to put it in Google. I checked and I have 292 contacts! Now, not that I contact all of them from my phone, but it’s nice to have your address book in there πŸ™‚

      • Alyssa says:

Yup, she went to a smartphone. She really likes it so far! I am going home this weekend so I will have to see how she is getting along with it!

  4. Lesley says:

I know people who’ve used balloons and I love to see what everyone picks.

  5. Anne says:

I’ve only ever had android phones (well, for as long as smartphones have existed), so I’ve always synced my contacts from Google. It’s so much easier!

I hope you guys listen to your reminder for next winter πŸ™‚

    • Anne says:

Oh…. and your last point reminds me of when I met one of my work teammates in January. She lives in North Carolina so we talk on the phone and online all the time. My company picture was somewhat out of date, so she walked right by my desk and asked someone where I sat because I apparently look nothing like it.

      • kilax says:

Ha ha! That’s funny! You know, I guess this guy kind of looked like his profile pic? But he still was NOT what I was expecting.

I was wondering about the Android phone thing, because we know people who have them and don’t use Google contacts… and still enter them manually. LOL!

I hope we listen to it, too! πŸ™‚

  6. No exclamation marks for 30 days!?!?!?! IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It would be awesome to get a massage every week. Ahhh, to live the life of a professional athlete. Sigh!

Good luck at the Wisconsin Half!!! GO TEAR IT UP!!!

  7. Kandi says:

I work with a woman who uses exclamation points in work emails. It cracks me up because our work isn’t very exciting. Hi Kandi! I completed verification! She also uses them in the subject line!
My android phone is synced with google contacts but I do input them by hand if I add a new one… I can’t figure out how to access my google contacts from my gmail app which just sounds ridiculous.

    • kilax says:

Ha! It must be exciting for her! πŸ™‚

That doesn’t sound ridiculous to me… I experienced that when I had Android phones for work. Everything was so backwards on them. I hope they work better now!

  8. Rachel says:

duuurrrrr you can import contacts? Hahah. Seriously, I have no idea how to do that. Probably because I don’t have any stored in Google contacts. (ok, probably because I never knew Google contacts existed! hahah) Can you export them from your phone to Google contacts?!?!?

I can’t wait to see the balloon I will be watching for on Saturday!

    • Rachel says:

Ahh, I meant to say more!

My sis and I are going to have to make Star Wars viewing plans over the holidays, though I don’t know if I’ll be able to hold out a week to see it!

Also, I love your dream. Much better than my dream about giant spiders invading our house. WTF?

  9. Michelle says:

SAY WHA???!!!! No explanation points? NO WAY! LOL!!!!!
Good luck on your half this weekend!! I have always manually entered my contacts before the iCloud days, now I am able to sync my contacts if I get a new phone.

  10. Michele says:

Hahaha!! I totally ran into someone I had talked to at least once a day for almost the past year…I was shocked!! What is funny though is when I met her…I didn’t know it was her, I heard her voice, I turned around, and was like “are you so and so from scheduling?!?!” She said, “why yes I am, and you are Michele from Ortho!!!!” Hahaha!!

    • kilax says:

That is so funny… cause this guy totally has a distinct voice and that is what made me think he would look different than he did. HA!

  11. Jen2 says:

I have yet to get a sports massage. I think it would be decadent! (PS – I couldn’t live without exclamations points!!…or ellipses.)

  12. HoHo Runs says:

How will we make our point?!! No can do!! I always picture the person on the phone totally different than what they are. !! Excellent postcard to yourself. !!

  13. Nina Beana says:

funny story – my ex and I went to Cancun last year at the end of February. We sent postcards near the beginning of our trip. My family got them in July….we broke up in June.
Moral of the story? Bring the postcards back with you to give to people.

    • kilax says:

That is a good moral to the story. LOL. We did have one postcard go to someone that… well, had we been sending them now, we might not have. Oops.

  14. Amy says:

I still have an old fashioned “dumb” phone (well, I tell my kids it is vintage – ha!) so I have no idea what you’re talking about πŸ˜‰

CAN NOT WAIT TIL DEC 18!!!!!!!!!!! (take that anti-exclamation point people)

    • kilax says:

Don’t worry, I heard dumb phones are coming back in style! πŸ™‚
      YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So stoked! πŸ™‚

  15. Black Knight says:

Massages and postural exercises now are part of my routine. Also some thermal bath helps.
    Great postcard to yourself.

  16. Chaitali says:

I’m glad the post cards showed up πŸ™‚ And I totally overuse exclamation points to! But I just don’t feel like I can properly communication online without them. And I input contacts manually.

  17. Karen says:

The mail took that long!!!!!! I love the reminder though πŸ™‚

  18. Mica says:

I enter my contacts into Google contacts, which I have sync with the contacts on my iPhone. I wouldn’t enter all that in manually into just my phone because then I wouldn’t have people’s emails for Gmail. I remember this being hard to set up though, so I don’t know what I’ll do if something in my setup changes.

  19. martymankins says:

My contacts have followed me for years, since 1989. I originally did the manual entry for each one (back then I had about 200). Since then, I’ve always had some form of digital contacts list that has evolved through so many different platforms. I think there might have been one time that I had to manually enter them on one system, but everything else has been exported in CSV format to where they’ve been since 2005 when I imported them into the Address Book on my Mac. Now thanks to iCloud, they live on.

I also manage an identical contact list over on Google Contacts for those times when whatever platform I use doesn’t talk to Apple’s iCloud. For those, I do keep track of new ones I enter on my Mac or iPhone then manually add them into Google Contacts. It’s a small pain to manage, but it’s the only way to keep them in sync.

When and where did you go to Mexico?
