I know CPR!!!
Oh my gosh. I can’t believe I’ve never told the “I know CPR!” story here. It’s something Steven and I still laugh about.
When I got certified for CPR, I was pretty jazzed about it. I was ready to use my new skillz at a moment’s notice! I am here to help, yo!!!!!!!!!!!
The same day I got certified, Steven, his brother (Andrew), and I were flying to NYC. The seats listed on our tickets weren’t together, so we went to the gate counter to ask the attendant if they could get us all in the same row.
“We only have one row available to put you in, and it’s the emergency exit row. In the case of an emergency, are you willing to help?”
Before Steven or Andrew could respond, I blurted out, “I know CPR!!!”*
Buah ha ha.
The attendant gave me the most derpitty, “wtf?!” look ever.
“Um, okay, that’s great.”
“Yeah, we’re willing to help,” Steven said.
“Okay, here are your new tickets.”
Phew. At least I wasn’t so derpitty we weren’t allowed to sit together.
Steven was just dying at my “I know CPR!” proclamation, for the rest of that day. And while we were in NYC (there were many random blurt outs of “I know CPR!” during that trip). And, would you believe it… it still comes up now! Ha ha.
I am getting re-certified in May. I wonder if I will be as excited about it this time?!
*Steven would like to add that he is pretty sure I said this in a derpitty voice.
The day after I got CPR certified I witnessed a really bad car accident. In my head I was thinking “please don’t let this be a test to see if I really learned CPR.” I felt like I grasped the material, but the idea of actually having to use it is scary!
Oh my gosh! What happened? Did paramedics show up?
I called 911 and luckily no one was injured badly enough to need CPR.
I’m always nervous about actually having to put my CPR training into practice. The main takeaway I have is “YOU, call 911!”.
LOL!
That is what I remember, too! Fortunately I’m going to redo the training soon.
I love the proclamation! I’ve got skills!!
I always remember pump to the tune of Staying Alive lol
Out of curiosity, why are you getting re-certified? I think I heard that the technique has changed (like, no more breaths, just chest compression), but wondering what need you feel for it. I love that story, btw! I can imagine Steven and Andrew got/still get a great chuckle out of it!
I am getting re-certified because it’s required for my personal training certification. Last time I took it, it still had breaths – they just pointed out that most people are more comfortable doing chest compression only.
I want to sit in your row!
I’m laughing so hard! Love the picture and the fact that they kept teasing you. Glad to know you know CPR! 😀
LOL! You crack me up!
Being in the medical field for gosh, almost 24 years we’ve been required to keep up our CPR cert. Once, in my very early 20’s I witnessed a lady having a gallbladder attack, and had to flip her over so she wouldn’t choke on her own tongue (sorry, gross). In the end they said it saved her life that I flipped her over!! I felt pretty honored that my self aid/buddy care and CPR classes actually paid off!!
Yes! You should have felt (or feel, now!) that way! That is awesome you knew how to help her!
This sounds like something I would do! I need to get certified again (not for any particular reason, but I like the idea of being able to help in a scarf situation). I wonder if I’ll blurt out “I know CPR” once I get my certification again ahaha…like, maybe during work standups.
