Someone I never thought I’d see again

Every now and then, a random embarrassing memory from childhood pops in to my head. I shudder and think “well, thankfully I will never see those people again.”

Until, you know, I run in to them on a short trip to my hometown.

Sigh.

Ha ha.

When I was in middle school, I babysat my mom’s friends’ baby. I don’t remember much, just that the parents were very nice people and that I was TERRIFIED of watching children on my own. Oh, and that I had NEVER changed a diaper before. Great set-up for a baby sitter, right?

On maybe my third or fourth time watching the baby, I freaked out. I think I got a bad headache, the baby was crying and I couldn’t soothe it. Like the incompetent babysitter I was, I called the parents and asked them to come home.

Yeah, I never babysat again, after that. Surprise, surprise?

I always felt foolish for not knowing what to do, and for panicking! (The logical part of me thinks “Why would you have known what to do? And WHY were you watching a baby?!”)

But I always thought, “Eh, I won’t ever see them again.”

Until we run in to the mom and baby, er, now an 18-year-old, at the Fools 5K. And my mom reminds me that I used to watch her. And all of the feelings of embarrassment come flooding back.

Ha ha. Not surprisingly, the interaction was short. But I wonder if the same memory came back to the mom, after seeing me.

To this day, I still haven’t changed a diaper! And am not sure why I ever would, unless Steven or Data or I start wearing them.

Now, let’s just hope I don’t run in to the boy who asked “can we make out now?” in the sixth grade. Hee hee (nah, that wouldn’t be awkward – I was his boss at McDonald’s for a bit in high school!)

Now I’m picturing cats in diapers! I’m sure that wouldn’t go over well. As far as embarrassing stories and running into people again, I definitely have experience with that too. My parents recently moved from the small town where we grew up to a city and one of my thoughts was at least I don’t have to worry about running into certain people when I’m visiting them any more.

Ha ha ha – I shouldn’t have gone there, right?! 😉

Sounds like that move will benefit you! Ha ha! The thing is… our town is not that small! I seriously NEVER thought I would see them again!

We’ve all had those but my parents don’t live in that town anymore, and I have no reason to visit. I haven’t been to either one of my high school reunions either.

haha! That is one of the problems with going home to see my Mom. It’s a small island, so I ALWAYS run into someone who knows all the stupid things I did as a kid, and there were many.

  4. OMG. I have never changed a diaper to this day, either. And I’ve had plenty of embarrassing incidents as a child for which I hope I never see the associated people again, too. Curses that the world can be as small as it is, right? =D

Changing your owner diaper…I’m LOL here. Funny how those middle school insecurities can still rear their ugly heads. This also reminds me my dog needs a diaper. Seriously.

  6. Karen says:

I have been there! I hate high school reunions for this reason…I have yet to go to one. and I am 30 years out lol

Doesn’t sound like you will be attending one any time soon! I am not sure if my class has had one yet (I never saw anything for our 10th), but there is NO WAY I would ever go. 😉

Hahaha, I think we had similar babysitting experiences! And I’ve still never changed a diaper (like you, I probably never will!).

I watched the little hell children next door ONCE. Within an hour of their parents leaving, they were running around the house naked, shooting each other with super soakers. I called my mom, in tears, and never baby sat again.

    • kilax says:

Wow! We really have! Ha ha ha. Do your parents still live next to the hell children family?

      • Anne says:

Yep, and they’re friends with the parents. One kid moved out, and the other is still living at home with his girlfriend and their two (probably hellish) kids.

I used to babysit but never actual babies. I did run into one of the ‘kids’ I babysat at a restaurant bar one day in my hometown. He was the bartender. So weird.
The first real diaper I changed was for my son once we were home from the hospital (the nurses spoiled us and changed all his diapers while in the hospital). Unless you count the time Nova had to wear diapers for a UTI where she leaked all the time.. or the time where my 3(ish) year old niece asked me to put a diaper on her for a nap but I made her talk me through it.. ha!

I think I’d have called my mom to come soothe the baby. Too embarrassed to call the parents. Haha! The summer between 8th and 9th grade this boy who sat behind me showed up at my house on his bike and asked me to ride. So I did. And he led me down some secluded trail and tried to make out with me and that did not go over well. At. All. Naive me never saw that coming. Now I see him commenting on other former classmates FB posts and (he and I are not friends) and that’s all I can think of. Ugh.

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha, so funny that you still “see him around” on FB! And I doubt many girls would see that coming! I am NOT surprised you stood your ground 😉

And now I’m imagining all three of you…in diapers!

  11. Losing Lindy says:

That is the problem with small town America…I have zero plans on ever going to a reunion as well.

That’s so funny!! Doesn’t it just figure that you bump into them. I have people like that too…the worst for me is someone who shoplifted a movie when I was a movie store clerk in college. He swears he didn’t do it, but he did (the movie was missing). A porn movie, no less. STILL awkward when I see him around.

  13. I laughed at the comment about you, your cat, or your husband needing diapers. Hilarious!! I have 11 nieces and nephews and I think I’ve changed all of their diapers at least once.

  14. I once babysat for the family across from my parents’ house. A guy called and told me he was going to kill himself…I started crying and had no idea what to do and had to have my parents come over (convenient coming from across the street…). I never babysat for them again, but I still see them whenever I’m home. I wonder if they think I’m the crazy girl…

  15. Mica says:

Hahaha, this sounds like a post that I could have written. The girl whose diaper I was terrible at changing is now in high school and friends with me on Facebook, which makes me feel “old.”

Maybe you can never learn to change a diaper; it’ll be a lifelong streak!
