Still knitting
Guys! I haven’t given up on knitting yet! I am actually, gasp, enjoying it, and finding it to be a soothing hobby (and especially like that it keeps my hands off my phone, and also out of my mouth, while I sit around, doing it)!
I worked a little on my washcloth, day by day, until the final class to finish it last Thursday. Even though it had a lot of errors, and looked pretty wonky, I was impressed by myself, that I actually made something, because I am so NOT crafty. Not one bit.
I immediately started another, because I wanted to keep working on the skills I learned, and finished that one in one night! Can you tell which below is the first one, and which is the second? Ha ha, I hope so!
After I was through with the blue skein of yarn, I moved back over to the one in the knitting kit Mica sent me, and yes, kept going with the same pattern, just adding a few rows. After Data modeled it for me, I kind of wished I was knitting him a bonnet. Muah ha ha, that time will come, Data.
(And why not knit him one? He doesn’t seem to mind having things on his head or around his neck! Check out the schweet lumber sexual hat that Rachel‘s cats, Soxie and Leo, got him. They said they thought maybe he got sick because he wasn’t staying warm enough, and thought the hat would help. Awww.)
Anyways. I am finding myself greatly looking forward to doing a bit of knitting here and there, most days, and am really pleased by that. I didn’t think I was someone who could enjoy making things, or be self-motivated to do so, after all my years in college of being forced to draw, draft and build models. Whenever someone’s suggested I take up a craft as a hobby before, I’ve always felt panicked by the thought of it. This… gives me hope. I really want to continue with it, hopefully taking some classes, but also looking up patterns and ideas on my own (I have a few, already!). I tend to be really lazy with research, so actually doing some would be good for me.

Yay for knitting! I’m so glad you’re enjoying it. I think it’s cool to have a hobby where you make things and kitting projects can have super cool outcomes! You should make one of those beard face-warmer things next. hahah.

Look at that improvement! I’ve found with crafty things like that, usually the first one looks pretty awful, but as you keep going it gets a LOT better. At least that was always my experience with friendship bracelets, which are somewhat similar (since it’s all a bunch of knots and whatnot). I did dabble in arm knitting last year, though, and had another experience like that: my first scarf was a nightmare, but after I got the hang of it it was SO much easier and the final product looked SO much better.
Yeah, that process totally makes sense, right? I was wondering about that arm knitting thing – do you have to finish it all in one sitting since you are using your arm as the “needle”?
Great job! I can totally tell the difference. I am not crafty at all, so I am always in awe of people who can create neat things with their hands.

Thank you! I had a cotton skein of yarn, and two size 8 needles to start! I can scan the pattern the shop gave me for the dishcloth if you’d like 🙂
I would like it too!! The dishcloth pattern I have is hard because it involves reversing the sides back and forth. 🙁
Hmm, don’t you always switch from the right side to the wrong side when you knit?
This is the pattern:
Row 1: Cast on 28 stitches
Row 2-4: knit three rows even
Row 5 (wrong-side): knit 3 stitches, purl 22, knit 3
Row 6 (right side): knit 28 stitches
Repeat 6 & 7 until 7.5 inches long, ending on a with a wrong-side row.
Beginning with the next right-side row, knit 3 rows even, cast off, weaving in ends.
That is cool to learn a new skill. I guess in the making things department, I sometimes enjoy cooking, but I don’t have any other crafty activities.
I love the creamy orangy color. made me think of sherbet, how can everything remind me of food lol I am not crafty at all, my husband always sweats when I say i am going to try to make something.

Knitting is great! My mom threw me into a pattern by giving me one that she had done – not too hard, but definitely more than just knitting. I’ve made a few mistakes along the way, but the cool part is looking at the yarn to figure out where the mistakes are and how to fix them. (Or at least how to make the stitch count right, even if I don’t fix them the “right” way.) Check out ravelry.com – they have free patterns!
I have been trying to get better at figuring out what I am doing wrong by my mistakes! Still working on that. I somehow dropped a stitch today and picked it back up, but apparently it was unworked, so then I had to darn it cause there was a big gap. Oops! And I am working on a pattern I got from ravelry! What a fun site!
You’re doing GREAT! You can see how your stitches are evening out from washcloth 1 to washcloth 2, and the orange yarn looks great! (I think it’s a little bit easier to get even tension with a springier, non-cotton yarn, too.) What do you have in mind for your first project? I think I basically did scarves, then hats, then socks, and then a sweater (which, as you know, was a disasterbox).
Thank you! And I did think the orange yarn was much easier to work with! As you know, now I am working on the infinity scarf. So I think I will do a few of those now. I really want to make a hat! By the time I get to it, it may be too late in the year. Ha ha.
I love making things and am pretty good at most crafts…except for knitting/crocheting. No matter how many times someone teaches me or how many Youtube videos/online tutorials I look at, I just don’t get it. I envy your skills!
