A welcomed early wake-up call

By , January 15, 2015 6:31 am

Typically, I am not very appreciate of Data’s early morning, before the alarm clock, “feed me right meow!” wake-up calls. I can get up just fine on my own! And you can wait to eat, Data!

But this morning? I was more than appreciative that Data was waking me up thirty minutes before my alarm, at 4:00 am. I was excited to offer him some food when I got up. I was excited to see he ate a bit!

And I was pumped when I got home from my run and he was crawling all over my desk, asking for more food. And again, when he ate it, along with part of his breakfast.

Phew. I hope he is on the mend.

On Saturday am, he threw up an abnormal amount, in a short amount of time (he rarely throws up). We took him to the vet, and they did blood work, and gave him some anti-nausea meds and fluids, and had us fast him for 24 hours. I was expecting him to be BEGGING for food during those 24 hours. Nope. More throw up (thankfully, not as much) during that time, and when the 24 hours was over on Sunday, he didn’t have any interest in food. On Monday the vet called and said he has pancreatitis, and to monitor his symptoms at home, but that if he starts drinking and eating, he should get better on his own.

Sigh. So I continued food journaling for Data. He took a single bit of food Monday and Tuesday. That was it. He was acting cuddly and sweet, and I was trying not to worry… but I could feel fear building up inside me. Fear of losing him.

Needless to say, I was in a deep funk at the beginning of the week. And felt guilty any time I left the house (and left him).

But thankfully, he ate a bit more last night (and we put some water in his wet food to get him to drink), and as I mentioned, again, this morning. I really hope he is back on the mend! I want my “whining for food all the time” cat back!

It is so hard when your pets get sick. Our old dog has had 3 really bad gastroenteritis bouts in the past year. It was terrifying to see her throwing up blood and then have no interest in food or water for days. You’ve been a good cat Mom and I am glad Data is on the mend.

    • kilax says:

Ugh! That is horrible!!! What do you do to treat that? Just wait it out? 🙁

      • Kiersten says:

Every time she would have to go overnight in the doggie hospital to get an IV and they would give her basically an intestinal fix a flat. It was so frustrating though because it was expensive and the dog was miserable and they just kept saying they didn’t know what caused it. So basically we have to just keep hoping it won’t happen again.

        • kilax says:

It was a similar thing with the pancreatitis – no idea what caused it (we could have checked an xray but Data doesn’t really eat foreign objects… just blankets and plants). Gah. It stinks not knowing, cause you want to be able to prevent it! I hope that was the last time!!!!!

  2. Ah poor Data. I’m glad to hear he is on the mend…I hope it continues. I hate when something happens it make you realize just how much you love those furballs. Keep eating Data!!

    • kilax says:

Thank you! I hope so too! And yeah, I always call him part of the family, but … just thinking about what would happen to our family this week if he was gone had me really down! Ugh!

  3. ChezJulie says:

Poor Data! I know how scary that is when our kitties are sick and not eating. I’m so glad he’s showing an interest in food again. It is funny how being demanding is a sign of recovery to us.

  4. Melissa says:

Oh I am so glad he is OK. Having a sick pet is one of the worst/scariest feelings. Extra hugs to Data and you!

  5. Christina says:

    Yay!! Glad Mr. Datos Potatos is feeling better! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

    • Christina says:

PS Just be thankful Dates doesn’t have front claws.. Will gets nice little pokes in the face (especially eyes and nose) every morning when Dex wants food. 🙂

    • kilax says:

Thank you! He says all the inquires from his aunt and cousin made him feel loved and better!

Oh gosh. Yeah. I feel bad his front claws were removed, but happy my face isn’t clawed up!

  6. Kristina says:

Glad that he is doing better – it’s so hard when pets don’t feel well (and kids too, I guess?).

  7. Definitely tough when your pets aren’t feeling well, and you can see it in their eyes but they can’t tell you … glad he is on the mend! 🙂

    • kilax says:

Yes! You can see it in their eyes and feel it a bit in their fur (I hope that makes sense to you, fellow cat-slave!). 🙂 Thank you!

  8. Tiina says:

Yay! I’m so happy to hear he is doing better 🙂 a sick pet is never fun

  9. Xaarlin says:

YayData! Keep waking up mom early to eat. Atta boy! 🙂

So freaking happy he’s got an appetite again. It’s so rough to see our pets go through hard times 🙁 I’ve been so lucky with CB rarely ever getting sick… Can’t imagine life without him.

All the love and scratches to Dates!

    • kilax says:

Yes! Keep bugging me! Bug your dad, too! (Ha ha, it’s always me – he knows I’m soft).

I… almost let my mind go there this week. And… felt like such crap. Yeah, SHOULDN’T imagine.

Thank you! And thanks for all the warm wishes and inquiries this week. Data said he should be well enough for a play date with CB soon. *snort*

  10. Pam says:

Oh sweet Data! I’m so glad he’s feeling better. Nothing scarier than when our little monsters are sick. <3

  11. diane says:

Oh, Data-potatah! I am glad he is okay. Having a sick kitty is NO FUN.
Bastet gave me a big scare last week…acting weird, going to the litter box and nothing happening, scooting around the floor on her butt…
Then she took a gigantic poo and has been fine since. Phew!

    • kilax says:

LOL! Sorry, I should not laugh, but the way you told the story made me! Guess she was constipated? Ha ha ha. Thanks for sharing 😉

  12. Oh, poor kitty 🙁 Having a sick pet is so lousy. They can’t even tell you what’s wrong, so you just kind of hope for the best, but fear the worst (at least, that’s certainly always been my approach haha). I’m glad he’s doing better now!

    • kilax says:

Yes! I was trying NOT to fear the worst, because worrying gets me nowhere… but I was starting to feel really scared! Ugh!

      Thank you! 🙂

Poor Data! I’m glad he’s feeling better! I get so upset when one of our pets is sick and its so hard not to worry.

Sonic got sick about 1 week after we adopted him and we added warm water to his wet food to get him to eat. Definitely worked and helped with hydration too.

    • kilax says:

Is he better about drinking water now? We basically have to add water to Data’s dry food every day to get him to drink!

      • Lindsay (Running the Windy City) says:

Yeah, he seems to do okay with it. Although he prefers the doggy water bowl at the moment.

  14. Lesley says:

Fingers crossed Data’s getting better! I love feeling that 4am stare, though I don’t see it. This morning Allie started clacking the handles on my dresser at 5:20. I can either feed her to stop it, or she’ll continue it.

  15. Maggie says:

Awww, poor little guy! I’m glad he is OK!! Last year Olive was puking A LOT more than normal. Took her to the vet and they said it was likely a hairball and gave us some stuff to help her pass it, which she likely did because the puking stopped. But it can be stressful 🙁

And luckily, she does the 6am stare, but I use a spray bottle to break her of the meowing.

    • kilax says:

Man! That is nuts about the hairball! How could they tell that is what it was?

LOL, sounds like Olive and Data live much different lives (I am so soft on him!) 😉

      • Maggie says:

Well, they said it COULD be a hairball. So we could either pay for an xray or whatever other tests to rule out anything else, OR we could just add a lube to her food, and if it was a hairball, it would pass and the puking would stop. But if it wasn’t a hairball, nothing would pass and she would keep puking and we would bring her back. Anyway, the puking stopped, so we assumed their hairball hypothesis was correct.

  16. Beth says:

Poor Data. Glad he seems to be on the mend. Feel better, sweet kitty!

  17. Erin says:

Fingers crossed he’s back to 100% soon!

  18. Amy says:

Oh no! I’m so sorry Data was sick – it’s so hard because pets (like babies) can’t tell you what is bothering them. I hope he’s back to his usual cool, cuddly and sometimes annoying self soon.

  19. Courtney says:

Poor Data!! We are sending good thoughts and feelings his way hoping he gets back to normal soon!! It’s so scary when they get sick!! Get better Data!!
    =^..^=

  20. Karen says:

I am so sorry about Data. I hope he is on the mend and starts feeling better real soon. Give him a hug from me 🙂

  21. Losing Lindy says:

how scary so happy he is feeling better

  22. kim says:

    Feel better, Data!

  23. Mica says:

Ooh, poor Data! I didn’t realize how serious this was; that must have been really, really scary, and I’m sorry I wasn’t a more sympathetic listener!! Pet illness is SO stressful, and I guess because they can’t talk, you put so much stock in their normal behaviors (or lack thereof). Ugh, I’m feeling panicky just thinking about it! I’m a few days late in this comment, so I hope my favorite kitty is on the mend!

    • kilax says:

Oh no, don’t be sorry at all! I was being a little odd and keeping it all to myself and feeling too worried to talk about it, so it’s not your fault you didn’t ask – I didn’t really let on about it 😉 And sorry to make you panicky! He is back to be a little turd now 🙂

Speaking of normal behaviors, Data was MUCH sweeter when he was sick. Like, he lets me cuddle him now, but when he was sick he wanted it all the time. It would have been really cute if I hadn’t been so worried!
