Would you have worked out with Mom or Dad?
From last December to May of this year, one of my Monday night Efit students (and friends!), Dawn, also brought her oldest son (a high school junior) to class – to take the class, as well!

Dawn’s older son left the class in the summer and has now “graduated” (hee hee) to one-on-one sessions. But this Monday, her younger son started taking the class with us!

I have to say, I think it’s pretty darn cool for high school students to be taking strength classes with a parent. I mean, it’s one thing to know that your parent works out, and to simply be encouraged to do it because they do as well, but to see them in action? And workout side-by-side? Neat-o! I think that is so fantastic!
Oh, and let’s note, to like your parent enough to work out with them (and in public! ha ha) says some awesome things about your relationship, too!
In high school, would you have worked out with your mom or dad?
I actually did in high school – my dad played volleyball with friends one night a week, and I went with him several times. I really enjoyed that one-on-one time… and learning lots of colorful language!
When I was younger my Mom and I would bike, play tennis, and yoga to yoga together (and we still do). There are a few parents who bring their kids with them to my boot camp and they have so much fun. I think it is a great way for parents to spend time with their kids and model healthy behavior.
That is fantastic! I love that you have been doing that together for years!
Sigh, I REALLY need to play tennis sometime next year! I want to try it! The last time I played was when I was in grade school!
I went to Jazzercise once or twice with my mom when I was in high school, but I wasn’t really into sports back then so that was it.
I feel lucky that my own kids are willing to things like climbing with me, and two of them have been to the gym with me once or twice. We are a lot more active as a family than my family was back when I was a kid.
That is awesome that you guys are active together. Is that something that you and your husband talked about consciously making an effort toward, because of how your childhood was? Or did it kind of come naturally?
That is totally awesome, we want to get our kids into running and have them run 5k’s with us as a family affair.
I would have totally worked out with my mom. We have always had a great relationship.
I remember going to aerobics classes with my mom when I was in high school. It’s great when kids like to do active things with their family. I’ve been rock climbing with my niece and nephew and am hoping to do a 5k with them soon.
I didn’t start doing any exercise until after graduating college (when I started running for fun), but at one point I joined a gym for a summer before sophomore year of high school and would drag my parents to come with me…all three times I went LOL.
Obviously looking back, I wish I was more active with my parents! I think the habit would’ve done us wonders 🙂
Ha ha ha! But that IS awesome you took them those 3 times. Do they work out, now?
No they don’t 🙁 we’re not an active family at all. It’s a wonder that I run haha. They do join me to walk around our local lake while I run when I’m back home though!
I used to run with my dad a bit but I was much slower at the time. While in college I lived down the street from my dad and we would go play tennis a few nights a week. Those were fun days 🙂
I’m blessed that Alex and Noah embrace my enthusiasm; it’s contagious. They’ll even offer to run a 5k with me at Mother’s Day and again near Christmas (thanks to the ZB Run Squad!) Alex enjoyed the group classes with mostly ladies, but I think he enjoys the one-on-one personal sessions even more — because it’s with a guy!
Yay! I am happy they can do the Dec 5K!
LOL – maybe the Friday am class with more dudes would have been better… minus the early wake-up call! 😀
I used to play basketball with my dad and one of my favorite races was done with my mom! I think doing active things with people is always a positive bonding experience 🙂
I worked out with my mom in high school. In my mind then, she worked out with ME. Haha! We both joined a Bally’s and went most afternoons. It was fun!
Ha ha ha! You let her work out with you, right?! 🙂
I love this! At the first gym I taught, there was a mom-daughter duo who would come to class. Taylor was a freshman in college, I think, and the two really enjoyed spending time together. It was sweet and refreshing.
My mom would have never exercised with me. Never ever. I wonder about my dad, though. He was an avid cyclist, and I think we would have enjoyed the world of endurance sports. I think we would have done things together on the weekend but I’m not sure about organized things – not in high school at least (money, scheduling, etc). If he were around now, I totally see us signing up for centuries together.
That is so sweet. I would love to do something like that with my mom. 🙂
That is cool that he was in to cycling! Do you think about him when you are riding? 🙂
Sometimes but more when I’m running. I sometimes think of him pacing me on the bike during a tough run. We still have his bike, and my brother and I agree that we can’t bear to get rid of it. Neither of us can ride it – the frame is too big – so it sits in my grandma’s garage.
That’s really cool that you kept it! 😀
In high school and when I was home during college breaks my mom and I would walk 3-4 miles together several days a week. Sometimes I would join her and her “walking buddy” and other times it would just be the 2 of us 🙂
How fun! My mom looooves volleyball, which I played briefly from 8th-10th grade, but she and I never played together. My parents would go to pick-up VB games through the park district, but between my own sports schedule and homework, I never joined them. But after a few times playing VB with my mom as an adult, I’m kind of “never again” on that … she is waaaaay too competitive and critical for me to enjoy it. That’s just who she is though, I’m used to it.
I can totally relate to your Mom! As a parent, I try to stand in front of Noah so I can’t see what he’s doing. That way Kim can make the corrections freely and plus Noah is probably more receptive to what she says since I’m not looking!
I think that is a smart move, Dawn, lol!
LOL! From what you’ve told me about your mom I am not surprised to hear she brings that to the court! 😀
There may have been some drama when I was a teenager, during what should have been a “friendly” game of volleyball while on vacation.
Go Dawn!! Model that awesome life-long behavior!!
My mom did aerobics to a records (before DVDs!!) when I was really young and I would do them with her. To this day when I hear certain songs on the radio I go right back to that moment. Leg lifts 4EVA!
Anyway, now my mom is mostly into walking for fitness and I would try to join her as often as possible when I lived at home or came home for school breaks. It’s a great time to chat and have one-on-one time.
On a record?! Like, listening to the instructions?! That is fun! Especially that the songs still remind you of it!!! 😀
Yep! A record where they just gave you verbal instructions. The record liner also had pictures of all the moves, too 🙂
So, my dad MADE me run with him on occasion (mainly in middle school), and I always felt as though it was another “chore”. Since then, however, I’ve matured and we’ve gone on a few runs, although not recently, but we still hike together plenty. Also, I’ve skied a LOT with him, and we are well-matched on the slopes. It’s great to get outside with both of my parents, even though it’s rare these days.
I was never embarrassed by my mom, but that might’ve been because she was young when she had me & only 19 years older than me. I remember going to a aerobics class with her once and also to the gym a couple times.
My mom and I trained for our first 5k together back in 1994. We continued to run together when I wasn’t competing in high school.
