A bridesmaid dress you can wear again

By , July 17, 2014 6:21 am

So many of you left nice comments about how much you liked the bridesmaid dress I wore at Christina and Will’s wedding. Thank you! And many also commented about it being a dress that could be worn more than once (or not only to formal events). In fact, when Christina gave it to me last summer I asked her (jokingly) if I could wear it to work before the wedding. Ha ha. Just kidding…

But I am actually doing that today!

Yep! Same jewelry! Different belt and added a cardigan.

I am really nervous about making a good impression at an important meeting I have this afternoon. More nervous than normal, as I’ve been assigned tasks for this project that I’ve never done before… and don’t quite know what I am doing. And feel very frustrated. ANYWAY! Wearing this dress that so many of you left nice compliments on has me feeling more comfortable, about my appearance, at least!

Thinking about this dress, I wonder if I’ll ever be in any other weddings. Most of my closest friends were married when I met them. You never know what the future holds though (meaning meeting new people – not something happening to my friends’ marriages, ha ha).

Before this wedding, I was only in one other, well, unless you count my aunt’s wedding, which I think maybe I was in? I just remember my dress matched a few other people’s dresses.

I love that all three of my siblings are in this photo. Sorry for the diaper shot, snister.

But I have definitely only been a bridesmaid that one other time, and that dress is not one I’ve used since. It was pretty to wear at the wedding, but I should probably donate it.

How many weddings have you been in?

I have to share our family photo from the wedding. I really like how it turned out and can’t wait to see more photos from Paper Crane Photo!

  1. Best of luck at your meeting today! You look FABULOUS! Sometimes it really does help me feel more confident when I look the part. You can do this!

Thank you! I didn’t know what they were talking about for quite a bit of the meeting but at least I know that my head boss thought I looked good 🙂

I do love that dress! It is almost the same color as my bridesmaids dresses. As the bride I tried to find something they might wear again. We ended up getting the dresses from Target, so at least if they don’t wear them again, they were cheap!

  3. Erin says:

Fingers crossed your meeting goes well!!

Also, I totally wanted my bridesmaids to buy dresses they could wear again. Such a pain to have a closet full of dresses you can only wear once.

I’ve been a bridesmaid…four times, I believe. My sister, my friend Carrie, my friend Jess and my friend Rae. Luckily I was able to rewear the bridesmaids dress from my sister’s wedding to Rae’s wedding since they chose the same colors! And after that they all got donated since they were floor length ballgown styles.

    • kilax says:

      Thanks!

Do you know if they did wear them again? I know my bridesmaids probably couldn’t. Tee hee.

How awesome you could reuse those. And yeah, what do we do with floor length stuff after?

      • Erin says:

Pretty sure Rae didn’t. Not sure about Jess or Carrie. They totally could have, though!

I ended up donating all of my dresses. Give ’em to girls who need prom dresses and can’t afford them!

I pray your meeting goes well! I definitely understand the stressors of doing tasks you aren’t used to!!
I LOVE your dress, it’s so pretty and I would wear it again too…I’ve only been in a couple weddings-none of which could I wear the dress again.

    • kilax says:

Thank you! I know you do!!! And it’s not that I don’t want to help, I do! I just feel so lost since it’s not something I am used to/trained to do. Is that how you feel?

      • Michelle says:

YES!! This is exactly how I feel. I am in the anatomic pathology side of the lab, which is an entire different field of study vs the clinical lab….yet I am in charge of the entire clinical lab when I work weekends…WHA? LOL

Hmmmm…old lady brain…I have only been in 5 weddings (I think?) but I have sung in several also. I only have one bridesmaid dress left, and I’m unsure as to what became of the rest of them (my parents have moved several times, and lots of stuff has been donated along the way).

I love that bridesmaid dresses have veered from the poofy prom style dresses of my youth (although I always felt like a princess wearing them – I actually had a hoop skirt for one wedding I was in!).

GOOD LUCK in your meeting today! You will be wonderful, I know it!

    • kilax says:

What is the one like that you have left? I would LOVE to see some pics of those dresses!

And thanks for the encouragement and support!

  6. I’ve only been in a few weddings but I should by my own tux so I can wear it to work. Would that be strange??

  7. Tiina says:

The worst was a baby blue HORRIBLE dress that was crazy expensive that I had to wear for being a bridesmaid in my friend’s wedding. I almost couldn’t grit my teeth enough to wear it. It was truly awful!

  8. Maggie says:

I have been in 6 weddings (plus my own). Both of my brothers, my BFF Genevieve, a childhood friend, a college friend, and a friend from high school. I don’t really mind that I bought all of these dresses that I’ll never wear again (and I have yet to donate them … but really who would want them?) I liked the dresses (some more than others) and they were special days, so to me, it’s worth it. I know that what I picked out for my ‘maids meant they probably would never wear their dresses again (although I think one of my sis-in-law’s did wear her dress to a formal event), but I liked the way they all looked and they were on the cheaper end of bridesmaids dresses.

  9. Melissa says:

I hope your meeting went well today! And I love the way you transformed the dress for the occasion 🙂

In addition to my own, I’ve been in 7 weddings as an attendant, been a reader for 2, and also played flute for a friend’s (I’m not including weddings where I’ve been hired as “the vendor”).

  10. Despite knowing approximately eleventy billion people that have gotten married in the past three years, I’ve actually never been in a wedding! Or at least never been in the official wedding party. My best friend from childhood got married two years ago, but I was the trumpeter for her wedding, not a bridesmaid. I guess she thought about asking me to be a bridesmaid but then opted to go for trumpeter instead, which was a-ok by me! I got all the perks (rehearsal dinner, being a part of my friend’s day, [thank you gift… :P]) without any of the downsides (buying a dress I’d only wear once, planning showers/parties). An ideal situation 😛 (Plus that way I could sneak out after the wedding to go to my senior year roommate’s wedding reception…because of course my BFF from childhood and my roommate from college had to get married on the same day. It’s not like there’s 364 other days in the year they could have chosen from. Hahaha 😛 )

  11. I’ve been in about 9 weddings. Way too many. I’ve given away all of my dresses. Some to my sister and others to I don’t remember.

  12. That dress is super cute!

I have been in zero weddings. I know, I’m such a loser, haha.

    • kilax says:

I don’t think you are a loser! Just probably like me, you didn’t have a lot of girlfriends when people were getting married.

  13. Kandi says:

I do love that dress and the color! Awesome that you can even wear it to work!
As a grown-up I’ve only been in two weddings – my brother’s and my BFF’s. I was in a few (3?) weddings for cousins as a flower girl when I was little though.
I’m pretty sure I have the dress as your purple one but mine is yellow. I wore it in my brother’s wedding about 8 years ago and then wore it again two years ago to my SIL’s wedding. I got a ton of compliments on it and was surprised! Someone asked me where I got it and I told her David’s Bridal. ha! I took the flowers off the front though.
The dress I wore in my BFF’s wedding I can wear again (hopefully) too when I’m not so pregnant. It’s not work appropriate since it is strapless but it’s a nice, flattering fit and I love the color.

  14. Mica says:

Yeah, that dress looks great! I’d wear it again if I had it “assigned” to me, haha.

That picture of your sister cracks me up! I laughed out loud when I saw it.

I haven’t been in many weddings. In fact, just one as adult (plus both of my parents’ second weddings, but I don’t count those). I was just a reader in that one, so I just had to wear a nice dress, and I wore it again to a few more events.

A woman at work was telling me about some brides maid rental company where you just rent the dress, and they ship it right before the wedding. Then you give it back afterwards, which makes SO MUCH MORE SENSE.

    • kilax says:

Oh wow, that IS a fantastic idea! Kind of like the company where you rent dresses for other formal events!

I am happy the pic made you laugh. I hope it made Christina laugh too, ha ha.

  15. Kristina says:

That’s awesome that you can – and want to- wear the dress again! You look great too!
I was in 4 weddings as a bridesmaid and while I liked some of the dresses, I never wanted to wear them again, so I donated them (and hopefully someone wore them!). I have a friend who, when she got married, just asked the bridesmaids to wear a black dress – their choice. I thought that it was a good move on her part and I think that her bridesmaids were very happy with that choice.

  16. Valerie says:

I absolutely ADORE your bridesmaid dress- totally rewearable! And you look gorgeous in that halter one too! I have one bridesmaid dress that I would consider rewearing- but only to another wedding or fancy event. I did hear that two of my bridesmaids wore their dresses again– makes me feel good that they weren’t a one-time deal!

  17. Christina says:

You look gorgeous snister!! So happy you are wearing your dress more than once! I am a firm believer that almost any dress can be a bridesmaid dress if it fits the “feel” of the wedding! 🙂 I was so happy with these ones, and grateful to have your help when picking them out!! <3

    • kilax says:

Thank you!!! And it so fit the feel of your wedding! We got so many compliments! I can’t wait to see the pics of all of us! 🙂

  18. Losing Lindy says:

    very nice photos!

  19. I’ve been in four weddings and wore two of the dresses again. One of them was actually from Anthropologie (and not their wedding section!), so it easily passes as just another dress. But it’s super cute (navy blue with green birds on it), so while it was actually more expensive than all the other dresses, I was totally fine with spending the money since I’ve worn it a few times since!

And I do love those bridesmaid dresses you’re wearing – the color is amazing and definitely is a dress you can wear again!
