Rivalries – something to care about?

When we were in Kansas City, my mother had THE NERVE to wear these sandals

in to a home with FOUR Iowa State graduates in it! Steven quickly remedied them for her:

I think I will have to get her a pair of these*:

Ha ha ha. So what is the big deal? Well, nothing really. At least to me – I was just joking around. I think the whole rivalry between schools thing is pretty goofy. But it did completely crack me up that she wore University of Iowa/Hawkeye sandals around a bunch of Iowa State/Cyclone graduates… someone was bound to notice and comment!

But like I said – it’s not a big deal, to me, anyway. I have never really gotten in to the “we don’t like them cause they’re the rivals!” mentality. I didn’t even realize there was a college rivalry until I was in school, and would hear about it.  I remember being around relatives during holiday breaks and them razzing me about how the Cyclones were doing in whatever sport… and me having no idea what was going on – because I didn’t pay attention to it at all. Seriously. I spent most of my time working on my architecture projects. I WAS SO FUN!

And even now, I don’t follow it, but I am more likely to play along with the “I don’t like the Hawkeyes” game, and suggest races like this to my brother-in-law. I get that it’s fun to tease, and bond over something… um, hopefully a shared pride for one team, and not a hatred, for another!

Are you big in to team rivalries (college or professional or whatever)?

I am curious to hear what you have to say! It’s so interesting to me to find out how people were raised and if sports and certain loyalties were a part of growing up, or if it came later on, or if like me, it wasn’t part of your life at all and it’s not really a “thing” for you.

*She actually gave these to me!

Honestly I find it mostly silly, because I figure if you want your team to sport the best it doesn’t really matter who they sport against…but sports weren’t really part of my growing up at all, so that is probably not surprising!

GO BADGERS! GO PACKERS! GO BREWERS! All other teams don’t matter. haha j/k.

I love razzing people when they cheer for teams that are my team’s rivals, but it’s all in good fun. Unless they cheer for Ohio State. Or the Bears. hahah j/k again. (But not really) Hah.

If we didn’t have rivals in sports I think it would be a lot less exicting! I love the games in college football where the team gets a traveling trophy when they beat their rivals – like ‘Paul Bunyan’s Axe’ when Wisconsin Plays Minnesota.

Ooh did you know there is one for when Iowa and Iowa State play? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iowa%E2%80%93Iowa_State_football_rivalry

LOL! You crack me up! I knew about the Cy-Hawk trophy, but not the others! That is fun! And I get that the rivalries make it fun, it just doesn’t appeal to me for whatever reason. I do think it’s funny listening to people argue about it though (um, to a point). 🙂

I went to a college without a football team or a strong sports program. Our only claim to fame is being the only university in Illinois to have ever won the NCAA basketball tournament (in like … 1963). Although Loyola’s men’s volleyball team did just win their NCAA tournament. So when it comes to college sports, I don’t care.

Robert is a huge Packers fan though. So he gets A LOT of crap from pretty much everyone around him. (There is no good explaination for his allegance to the Packers. He grew up in the south burbs of Chicago.)

Growing up in MN you always either loved the Vikings, or the Packers, NEVER both…
When Brett Farve went to play for the Vikings, I couldn’t cheer for the Vikings anymore, LOL! I’ve now adopted the Bears as my team! 🙂

  5. I’ve never been much into professional sports rivalries (my fellow native Michiganders often get their panties in a bunch when they find out that I cheer for the Blackhawks instead of the Red Wings now that I live in Chicago haha. Personally, I really don’t care much about pro sports at all, so I’m just a fan by locality 😛 ). College sports, however, are a different story. I didn’t go to the University of Michigan, but I’ll still hate on Ohio State like I did! And the rival of my college? Don’t even get me started! I’ve actually legitimately side-eyed people who’ve wanted to work with me if they went to my college’s rival (or another college that wasn’t technically our rival but I can’t stand nevertheless, because of their unparalleled dominance in sports on the national level. So annoying). That’s probably not healthy, because I’m sure they’re wonderful human beings…although maybe not, if they chose to go to THAT school 😛

Ha, so… you basically don’t talk to these people when you find out they went to these other schools? What if you found that out about a friend, after the fact? LOL

      • Oh, I’ll talk to them. My mom, sister, and brother all went/will be going to my college’s main rival, and I don’t hate them 😛 But I WILL give people crap about their alma mater if I don’t like it hahaha.

  6. I think that whole thing is ridiculous too. We have ASU and UofA here in AZ and people are nuts over the rivalry. Meh I could care less lol.

  7. We hate the Packers and the St Louis Cardinals. We don’t give a crap about the White Sox, which is even more insulting to Sox fans, haha. The end.

Biiiiiiig eye roll about college rivalries. Since my family isn’t really into sports or college teams, I was baffled when I finally went to college and saw it. Actually, right before I left for college, I was wearing a shirt with my school logo out at lunch with my family (in my hometown…not in the college town), and some alum from our rival walked by, got in my face and said “UVA SUCKS!” as he was passing. (And then laughed about it with his friends as he left and I was left confused about what happened.) I’m sure he thought he was being funny and that I wouldn’t be a giant grump about it, but it left a really sour taste in my mouth about college rivalries, and I still judge that guy (even though I don’t remember what he looks like) so hard.
