Waucondafest Challenge 10K Race Report

This 10K was definitely a “I’m not sure if I’ll run today if I am not meeting people or racing!” sort of thing… just a way to get my butt out of bed and on the street (um, running).

I didn’t even know about this race until the day before race day! Steven and I like to attend car shows, and I noticed in the news that there was a local one on Sunday. When I looked it up I realized it was part of a festival and thought, “hmm, maybe there is a race that goes along with it!” Sure enough, there was a 5K/10K option for Sunday. And being $25 for either distance and only a few miles from the house, it was a go!

Originally, I was going to ride my bike to the start, but decided not to, because I wasn’t sure where to put it when I was done, or how safe the ride would be getting there. It’s a good thing I didn’t ride my bike there – I would have ridden part of the course, and seeing how hilly (for around here) it was… I am not sure I would have done the race! Ha ha!

I knew this area was hilly but it kind of kicked my butt! I figured with my lack of speed training and recent paces on runs I could come in under an hour for the 10K. I was on pace for that… until maybe the fourth mile?

Then I crippity crapped out. I was passing people in the first four miles, then getting passed in the end. It was funny though, whether I was passing or getting passed, every runner took the time to comment on how much the hills sucked. Ha ha. Eh, it’s hilly, plus it’s humid, it’s sunny, it’s hot. It’s… SUMMER! I was just happy to get out there and get a run in!

I ended up finishing in 1:01:33, just a bit over my goal! And man, I was drenched when I finished. I could ring water out of my clothes. Gross!

I stuck around for the awards ceremony, and spent a lot of time talking with a nice mother-daughter duo I had chatted with a bit before the race. It’s so fun to talk to other runners from the area, and learn about new races, where they run, what they are training for, what laundry detergent they use to wash their clothes (man, we talked about a lot) and so on. I had a bit of my ALL THE FRIENDS!!! feelings creeping in, but I managed to suppress them.

Funny thing – the last song I heard on the radio before I started the race was “Wiggle,” so it was stuck in my head the whole time. GAH! Have you ever had an annoying song stuck in your head during a workout or race? What was it?

I am excited for my next race – a small 5K on Friday with my dad!

  1. I love local races like this! I’ve never heard of this race, either, but that entry fee can’t be beat. Who knew that there were so many hills in the area, though? WAY TO PUSH THROUGH. The picture along the course looks so peaceful!

You know what, I am discovering a lot of hills around where I live! Nice for training… annoying for races. LOL! When are you going to come race in this area with me? (again 🙂 )

  2. Jen2 says:

The hubbs has done the Wauconda Tri a few times and complained about how hilly it was. I was shocked! But, having run down that way a couple of times, I can believe it! Good job getting out there!

PS- that picture above doesn’t even look like you! I’ve looked at it several times trying to be sure!

    • kilax says:

Yeah, I have ridden in that area before and remembered thinking the hills were challenging on my bike! That tri must be challenging!

LOL. It’s me. That’s funny you say that – my mom and Grandma recently thought a photo of me wasn’t me… um, it was.

  3. Before my first half marathon, they were playing “Whistle” at the start line, and I had that song in my head pretty much the entire race. I now always associate that song with my half marathon…which is weird and uncomfortable, given what the song is about, but whatever 😛

  4. Rachel says:

    hey, nice tank top! 😉

Great job with the heat and the hills and all the lovely things that go along with summer running! Didn’t everyone swear they weren’t going to complain about the heat this summer after the winter we had??? HMMM????

At the end of the Green Bay Marathon I had Macklemore’s “White Walls” in my head – just the chorus though, over and over and overrrrrrrr.

    • kilax says:

Why, thank you! I was already thinking ahead, you know, outfit planning, and should we wear those in KC until we take them off to run in our bras?! 🙂

Oh gosh. I KNOW! I have been thinking about that. SHUUUUUUT UUUUUUUUUUP. There is always something to complain about with the weather.

I love that you love Macklemore. LOL.

      • Rachel says:

I’m all bra, all the time baby. Haha, NO!

Those tanks would be pefect for the trail run. Great idea! Cause they are light and it will probably be not cold. 🙂

        • kilax says:

LOL! If it’s hot enough… I’ll take my shirt off. When I am running! Geesh, that sounded bad at first 😉

Yes! I could use a few more light white tanks!

  5. Pete B says:

Nice job considering the heat and humidity. Is it fall yet? 🙂 I have never heard of the song “Wiggle” should I click the link and get it stuck in my head? 🙂

  6. Amy says:

Haha-you talked about what laundry detergents you use. I love it! And I love small, local races. I just hate racing short distances in the summer. So I am impressed.

    • kilax says:

Yeah, something about the Tide sports wash working really well?

Yes! Small and local are so fun! I think the 5K I am doing Friday has maybe 30 participants?

      Thanks 🙂

  7. Meghan says:

I am super pumped for my first local suburban race this weekend!

So, Wauconda. Mike actually lived there briefly, and we would always go boating on Bangs Lake! So many memories!

Congrats, lady! This past weekend was BRUTAL for running!

    • kilax says:

One by you?! 🙂 Good luck!

Fun! Bangs Lake was HAPPENIN’ yesterday! I so wanted to be on it. I can’t wait to get on the water this weekend.

      Thanks! 🙂

  8. mary says:

Glad to find your blog! Also, maybe I should start running races again.

  9. What a great local race! I have to add this to my calendar for next year! I heard about it from some runners at the trails the day before..all they said was WHOA hills. Way to power through!

  10. Great race recap. Hills during a race are brutal along with the summer heat, really makes for a tough day. Either way you did a great job of pushing through.

Running with your dad is going to be totally awesome. I love when we have races that the whole family can participate. Makes it so much more fun.

  11. Heather says:

Hills and heat = Whoa baby!!
What a great random race day – you did great!

  12. Marcia says:

I ran that race a few years ago but I think it was only a 5k then. Yes hilly!

  13. Jillian says:

The worst is when I only know three lines to a song and it gets stuck in my head, haha!

  14. Melissa says:

OH NO—I woke up this morning and started whistling the “flute” part to “Wiggle”. It finally went away and now it’s BACK. Ahhhh!

Any conclusions on the laundry detergent? I feel like over time my workout clothes become some of the nastiest items on the planet. (And I am good about hanging them to dry, not letting them “sit”, etc) I feel guilty throwing them away but they become so “ripe” the moment I start sweating. I use Tide with Febreze and apparently it’s not strong enough for my bionic sweat!

    • kilax says:

      LOL! It’s so darn catchy!!!

They said that the sport Tide can bring back even the nastiest clothes from the dead, but I haven’t tried it yet. Sports washes haven’t seemed to help me. I am just super stinky!

  15. Those hills are crazy! Glad you were able to finish, even it was behind your goal (we can blame crappy summer running, right?).

  16. jan says:

I hate it when I get a song stuck in my head…it’s really hard to make that go away during a run. Of course it’s usually a song I don’t even LIKE to start with.

Great job finishing a race in this heat & HUMIDITY!

Funny side note: Way back in the 90’s my hubby & I almost moved to Wauconda because he had a job offer from Motorola. I think it’s good he didn’t take it though because they did big cut backs a couple years later!

  17. ugh. i hate it when i’m soaking wet after a race. it’s so nasty. and then when i don’t think to bring a towel or something to sit on the car gets so gross.

nice job hanging in there with the heat!

    • kilax says:

Last week I forgot to bring a towel for a humid morning run! I’ve remembered every day since then. I should just leave one in the car!

  18. That is a hilly course! Wow! Great job in tackling them though. You are superwoman!!

  19. Bari says:

Way to just go out and race a 10k with basically no planning 🙂 I’d say just over an hour is great for a hilly, summer run!
