The weird things I love about winter

Just a list of the “odder” things I love about winter (other than the cold, snowshoeing, drinking/eating all the hot things, and so on).

  • Kicking snow/ice build-up off my car – sooooo satisfying!

The only thing I don’t like:

  • Wet socks! UGH! I hate it when I step in a wet spot from someone’s shoe, when I have my socks on! EWWWW!!!

What are the weird things you love about winter?

Just kidding! I know I am one of few who love winterTell me one thing you are looking forward to when the snow/cold weather is gone!

I am looking forward to riding my road bike outside while I get ready for our one-day RAGBRAI adventure!!!

I actually really love winter running. As cold as it is I feel like my body is much better adapted for cold running than any other season; I’m sort of over running on top of snow (it was novel, then it was beautiful, then it was okay, and now I’m just DONE) but I really like the cold. I love the way the snow sparkles if I get to run around twilight, I love the way it looks like glitter in the air when you’re running in it.

But I am definitely ready to not have to worry about my traction. I know it makes me stronger, because you need to use so many more stabilizer muscles (or something), but really, I am ready for my normal running paths to open back up and to not have to run in the road near cars again. I am looking forward to soft trails that aren’t frozen solid. I am looking forward to seeing pretty flowers and trees and animals again.

…wow, I wrote you a book. I guess today I am waxing poetic, lol! Sorry!

I hear ya! Part of the reason I’ve gotten such less mileage in this year is because I usually run outside and it’s just taking me so much longer with all the snow. I wouldn’t mind if it was on the ground and not on the paths 🙂

We won’t have soft trails until June!!!! 😛

    Sparkly snow!

I also like when the bare trees are frosted with ice. That is always so pretty!

    Ice fishing!

When the sidewalk is slippery and you pretend to ice skate on it. hahah.

There are some good things about winter!

My most recent dislike about winter: My dirty car!

    • kilax says:

Yes! That is a great list! I love love love when the trees have that ice frosting and I keep meaning to look up why that happens. It’s so magical (not even being goofy – that is how it makes me feel) when it does.

Ha ha ha. Pretend ice skate.

It’s a cardinal sin to let your new car be dirty for more than 24 hours! Did you know that?! It’s also bad to let your friend drive it when there are limos around.

  3. Maggie says:

I love running during a gentle snowfall. And I love wearing tights. Fashion tights. (I actually don’t like running tights because like half of my pairs don’t stay up where they need to.)

I hate that Chicago doesn’t plow the alleys. We haven’t parked in our garage in two months.

    • kilax says:

Grr! I realized only two pairs of my tights have drawstrings so I have resorted to folding the fabric over and pinning it to keep it up! (even did that this am!) I wish they all had drawstrings!

That is cray cray! Are you going to talk to your Alderman?

      • Maggie says:

I’m sure I”m not the first person to inquire about plowing the alleys. I’m not sure if it would even make it better – the snow would then pile up on the side of the alleys, in front of everyone’s garages. And you can dig out the area in front of your own garage, but it’s such a tight space, where do you put the snow? The few times we did try shoveling, we would throw the snow on our garage cans, and then they get kind of buried. I’m sure if street parking was a hassle we would have gotten in the habit of shoveling.

        • kilax says:

Hmm, don’t they have parks or something they take the snow too? Smart people work for the govt. They could figure it out!!! 🙂

          • Maggie says:

Well considering how long it takes for them to plow our street (which is admittedly short and so probably at the end of their plow route), I have zero hope they’ll 1) ever plow the alleys as well and 2) take the time to transfer the snow elsewhere. So, lesson learned, if you want to navigate an alley during the winter in Chicago, get 4WD or snow tires. Oh well.

  4. runninglaur says:

Ok, so I hate being cold, so I thought this was a good prompt to make me think of some things I actually do like about winter. Hmm….. (This was much easier when I lived in Phoenix 😉 )
I like the look of snow when you’re warm inside.
    Ditto, look of ice.
Being able to see really far because there aren’t leaves on the trees.
    Warm scarves.
    Heated seats in cars.
That satisfying crunch when you step through the snow successfully.
    Not sweating off makeup immediately.

Things I’m looking forward to in 2 months when winter is finally over:
Not carrying a massive coat through airports.
    Not wearing shoes.
    Not wearing long underwear.
Being able to open a window.
    Lots of sunshine!

    • kilax says:

Oh yes! Not having the heavy coat in the airport is a good one. That gets so annoying!

LOL! And thanks for participating!!! Heated seats. Yes! And that crunch when you break ice!!!!

  5. Jobi says:

I am also keen on the satisfaction of kicking the slush off of my wheel wells, but then again, I’m also the kind of girl who gets satisfaction out of mowing the lawn and washing windows so what do I know?
I love running while it snows. Love it. I love the feeling of a blazing hot shower post-run during the winter. However, I have to say that I’m finding it harder to convince myself to go outside to run in the cold when there’s a treadmill in my nice, warm, finished basement. As I get a little older, I don’t enjoy the first freezing cold mile of my runs at all. Actually, I don’t even know if it has anything to do with my age, but I’ve been running for about 18 years and I think I’ve finally worn myself out of the “I’ll tough it out” stage of things. I never thought I’d say that because I have a love/hate relationship with that thing and I really consider myself an outdoorsy person. However! I have just ordered my first pair of snowshoes and I am super excited to be able to take advantage of winter, no matter what the conditions. I keep thinking that if I just joined some group runs, the first cold mile won’t be so difficult to endure, so I know that it’s really kind of in my head and my own fault so I shouldn’t complain. But I just did! Ha!

  6. OMG! Yes to the first. I hate winter but love kicking the snow off. And I get totes mad when it’s too frozen to go anywhere and hurts my foot. I also like the hot bath thing, too.

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha! I was going to say that! When it’s become ice brick and hurts me it makes me HULK level angry (okay, maybe not THAT angry!).

  7. Erin says:

Best things about winter? Hot chocolate, watching a gentle snowfall from the comfort of your own home, using the fireplace (which we would do if our apartment didn’t get beastly hot), and feeling badass if you run outside in cruddy weather 🙂

However, I am REALLY looking forward to not having to think about which coat to wear and being able to sit outside at lunch and feel the sun on my skin.

    • kilax says:

It’s going to feel weird, not having a coat on, for awhile!

Data wants to know if he can come over and use your fireplace when you are in PR 🙂

  8. Anne says:

I love snow as it’s falling and when it’s still fresh and clean 🙂 I like being snowed in if I have nowhere to go, too! And walking around while it’s snowing can be fun, particularly at night. I feel like we’ve done a lot of that this winter.

I’m looking forward to being able to go places without a change of shoes. And not freezing my arse off (literally) on a run.

  9. Michelle says:

I didn’t mind winter, until THIS winter…If this would’ve been posted about 6 weeks ago, I’d have said, I love the quiet that can be almost felt after it snows. I enjoy running in the snow with friends (when its not below 0 lol). And the sunsets/rises (as you said) are truly amazing.

Right now, I am just sooooooooooooo tired of my hands and feet hurting due to being cold. So praying for spring, SOON. lol

    • kilax says:

Ha ha! I think I am posting this so late because I am sad to see the temps going up. Sigh. I struggle with spring. But if it makes you hurt less, I can deal. LOL!

  10. Michele says:

I don’t mind winter too much. Although I’ve not done much running this winter either. Usually I do, but this winter I don’t know. I’m just over it.

I HATE wet socks too!!! One of my pet peeves!! UGH!!!

I cannot wait for this hand to heal so I can get out on my bike outside! I’ve been riding the trainer this winter, and nothing compares to outside riding!!! Can’t wait! (Although it’ll be a while before I’m allowed to ride outside)

  11. Marcia says:

I do love winter. That said, I’m ready for it to moderate a little. Yeah stepping in slush in the house is bad. A bike ride would be awesome about now.

  12. Linda says:

Kicking snow / ice off the car was a topic of conversation at Pilates class last evening! Everyone agreed that it was very satisfying. I love to do it in a parking lot!

  13. kapgar says:

I love almost everything about winter. I just feel like we’ve had too much of it this year. Way too much.

  14. Sorry, I only got about 1/4 way through of this post. Topless selfie, scandalous!

Our dog LOVES snow. She eats it while she walks, going super fast, just little nibbles. It’s super cute.

    • kilax says:

LOL! And it took me FOREVER to find that pic because I think it’s actually from Oct, shhh 😉

Aww, this is so cute! We need more Penny pics!

  15. Losing Lindy says:

I love kicking the snow off of my car too. Mine is never that small though ;/

I am so excited for leaves…that is what I love.

  16. jan says:

Great list, and I agree on almost all of them! I too love kicking the snow off the car and the wet sock thing drives me CRAZY. Glad you were able to find some good thing about this never-ending winter!

  17. Love seeing another winter lover out there! I think the only thing I really complained about this winter was the sub-zero cold (and the never ending cycle of that mixed with snow). I actually love the snow and would MUCH rather sit in traffic thanks to a snow storm versus having to sit in traffic thanks to those miserable Cubs games in the summer. 😉 That said, I’m REALLY looking forward to our trip to Florida – I think my Vitamin D stores are at an all-time low.

  18. Mica says:

I don’t miss winter, but I did appreciate a lot of those things, especially kicking snow crust off of wheel rims!!
