Photo Penalty

By , October 2, 2013 8:11 am

I screwed around so much during my run this morning – stopping to take photos and text people – I feel there should be some sort of penalty, in the form of time or distance.

Alright, Kim, we see your watch says you ran 6 miles, but it looks like you stopped take 16 photos and you send 8 texts. That is a deduction of .1 miles per photo/text, or an addition of 1 minute, each.

Ha ha.

For what it’s worth, I only left the house to run when I did because the fog was so pretty, and I wanted to take photos. So… can I have less of a deduction?!

Do you ever stop to take photos when you are working out? Why or why not?

If you do stop, do your stop your watch?

If I see something interesting (to me), I am going to stop to take a photo, even if I am with other people (I will ask if it’s okay). Capturing moments on “film,” even with a smartphone camera, is important to me. More important than “training.”

Okay, okay, if I was really training for some reason I might stop less. Maybe.

I used to be a lot worse. Before I had a smartphone, I actually carried my camera with me on my fuel belt. What. A. Dork!

I don’t usually carry my phone (or camera) with me so I don’t take a lot of pictures. (and when I do have it, it’s crammed in my fuel belt and a pain to take out)

I wish I had it on my run last night though. There was one tree that had turned the such a beautiful bright red and it was stuck between all these green trees that hadn’t started to change color yet. It was really pretty!

I don’t think you should get penalites for stopping! It’s your run, who cares?!

    • kilax says:

Aww man! I want to see that tree! I just love the changing colors! I am going to attach a tree pic for you.

Hee hee. I definitely think it’s okay! I have read a few bloggers who make fun of it though!

  2. When I do easy runs I stop a lot, especially Saturday/Sunday runs. I’ll text or take pictures and then start up again. I figure that easy runs are supposed to be fun!

By the way that fog is so cool!

Since I wear my phone in an armband I rarely stop to take pics. It’s just such a pain to get it in and out of the arm band. I wish it were easier, though, because sometimes I see stuff that I think would make a great picture!

I love taking pictures on my morning runs but usually a) its too dark or b) i forget my camera. I do think having a smart phone has helped me to take some good running photos but my smart phone camera is so out of date. i think I need a new phone!

  5. Declan says:

my rule for photos: usually when I start, as my fingers aren’t sweaty yet and I can actually unlock the phone, or if i’m doing an easy run, I don’t care about my end time and I’ll take a photo. Although I have trouble with the phone with slick fingers!

  6. I like to carry as little as possible while I am running so I don’t often take pictures. Most of my running pictures happen with I am running the stroller and I have a place to put my phone.

I carry a camera on my long runs. My phone just doesn’t capture the “Kodak Moments” like a camera with a retractable lens! And yes it’s case has a belt loop, so it goes on my fuel belt. I always keep my watch running even when I stop. I guess the additional time is my “picture penalty!”

  8. Kandi says:

Ha! I stopped on my bike ride today to take some photos. I did stop my watch for most of the stops but I don’t always. I don’t usually stop during my runs though but I often run without a camera.

  9. I wish I ran with my phone (especially for trail runs). It’s so beautiful out in nature! Just gotta find a way to transport it. I tried your approach once…major chaffing! Instead, I’ll just have to live vicariously through your awesome shots on your blog, Facebook, etc.! 🙂

That’s so funny! I love the photo penalty idea. I don’t take a ton while running. I have to actually stop to do it, so it messes me up. Sometimes on long runs I do, though.

The fog this morning was amazing! I’ve been stopping a lot lately to take pics. Usually at the start and near the end of my runs. I do stop my watch. I’m not serious about training now either.

  12. Doesn’t it all depend on what your goal is for working out? I mean, if your goal is to set a certain pace or complete a certain number of miles within a certain number of minutes, then sure, penalize yourself for stopping. But, if your goal is a flat distance, regardless of time, or to exercise while appreciating nature, then who the eff cares how often you stop? These days, the only times I go running are with Gavin, which means I stop all the time to answer his countless questions. Yes, it’s annoying (at times, though I’m mostly used to it now), but I don’t consider it to NOT be exercise just because I have to stop every so often.

    • kilax says:

It totally does. And… I was trying to be funny. Fail! LOL. No one should care if I stop, except for me 😉 It was just funny how much I stopped yesterday. 🙂

Part of running is enjoying it. No penalty needed.

Dork alert!!! Camera on your fuel belt?? Are you for reals??

I do take pics sometimes, but it is usually dark out so there isn’t a lot to see!

My new garmin has the auto stop feature, so that is nice, I don’t have to think about it!

    • kilax says:

Ha ha ha, IKR? At least now I use my smart phone so my dorkiness is more inconspicuous! 🙂

I haven’t ever used the auto stop! I just press the button and turn it back on. I should try it.

ahem. I was hoping furlough would = MORE blog posts, not less. Wah wah wah!

I love your pics – don’t ever stop taking running photos!

    • kilax says:

I know, isn’t it weird? I feel like I am in a haze this week. I guess I need more interaction to get my brain going? I feel a bit shut off, even though I have been getting out! Thanks for saying that, though 🙂

1st I have carried a camera to many a race to take photos….so we can be dorks together! And last Sunday at the marathon I texted my husband who was back in GA while I was in CA that I was tired and asked him to come get me….I was joking…sort of. I try not to text while running mostly because I suck at it but it does come in handy when you are running behind pace on a marathon to let your ride know you are still alive so they don’t abandon you. Love the pics. Makes me miss running on Des Plaines trail.

    • kilax says:

Oh gosh! Texting has come in handy BIG TIME when I am running. Or at least, to have the phone with me so I can say if my predicted finish time has changed (SLOWED down, ha ha). Although, I learned my lesson – I ran with my phone in my bra w/o a plastic bag in Chicago 2010 and ruined it! Ha ha ha. Now I double bag it.

The DPRT misses you! COME BACK! 😀

  17. Steph says:

Lovely photos! I vote to definitely have fun while you run 🙂
