Random Thoughts Thursday 43

  • This article “Privacy? Forget it, we’re all celebrities online now” (pdf here) is really interesting, and probably deserves a post of its own, but I am being lazy. Ha ha. The point is that we have made the online world what it is today, and it’s up to us to decide how much to put out there.
  • I was surprised I looked like I was in so much pain in my official photographs from the Ironman 70.3. I think I prefer the pictures Steven took. Although, even those are too photo-realistic. Holy cellulite! Or something! What is that?! My Milwaukee Marathon photos looked like that too. There are reasons not to have your photo taken with a DSLR… just saying…*

  • I used to think that I was someone who would turn bright red before a burn turned in to a tan, but thankfully… my time in the sun Sunday seemed to skip the “red” process. Do you turn red first, or do you get tan right away? You know what tan I think looks awful? The raccoon eye tan from wearing sunnies. Ahhh! Must avoid at all costs! Not being avoided – watch tan and racerback tan.

  • Spam comments are getting more and more helpful! What?! Who uses IE? (besides me, at work?!) I think that Chrome commenting issue finally fixed itself… maybe.

  • At the beginning of each month, I add select photos from the previous month on to the digital photo frame in our kitchen. I was a bit behind for May and just added the photos last night. And geesh, I know this sounds cheesy, but going through that exercise each month is such a great reminder of all the joy I have in my life! Happy happy joy joy!
  • Speaking of joy… Steven and I have a really fun weekend planned, and I am looking forward to doing something, just the two of us! We need some “us” time!

*This photo doesn’t bother me (hence posting it here), nor am I upset with how my body looks. I was just surprised to see photos like this.

  1. I flipped back from Firefox and Safari <– don't tell my IT husband. snort. And that is a bad tan line. omg. I don't know what's worse that or farmers tan! Maybe you can do a airbrush spray tan a few times before the wedding to even out next year? <– also another reason I had a late fall wedding! Nobody had tan lines to worry about! lol

I think your official photo from the 70.3 just shows your focus and determination (doesn’t really look like pain to me)! It’s ok to not be smiling in every race photo.
I used to wear a watch all the time and had a killer watch tan line. My parents still do! I mostly avoid it these days though (partially because I don’t wear a watch during my lunch time runs in the city). I do have a line on the bridge of my nose from my glasses but since I wear them almost all the time, nobody is the wiser.
I use IE at work too… I hate it. And everytime I log in to the private email server it notifies me that I’m using a super outdated version of IE and do I want to upgrade? Ummm, I can’t.. that’s up to my employer, not me. sigh.

    • kilax says:

I have the same issue with not being able to upgrade IE on my work computer. I can’t even use gmail/gcal from it, it’s so old.

  3. J says:

Sorry I haven’t commented in a while – life has been crazy.

As for the race photos – I think race photos always show the worst part of our bodies. I have a few where I didn’t know my leg flub moved like that while I run!

I do not tan – I burn, unless I put suntan lotion on, then I tan very very slowly.

Hope you have a good weekend – I have another busy weekend. I only have two free weekends this summer…ugg.

    • kilax says:

I have been wondering how you are! That sucks that you have barely any free weekends. 🙁 That really wears me down. 🙁 You had a ton of weddings to go to, right?

Ha ha ha. If even you have leg flub, that makes me feel better. LOL!

  4. Anne says:

Interesting article on privacy. I’d be interested to read a full post about it, since there’s a lot of points being made.

I don’t think you look pained as much as maybe focusing on your breathing? But I’m amused that Steven seems to have a better camera than the race photographers! Thankfully the only non-official shots anyone ever gets of me running are with a cell phone, which seem to not show a ton of detail.

And I turn red like a lobster before reverting back to my normal pale. Though I do have sweet watch and racerback “tan” lines. And does this mean your sister did find you a racerback bridesmaid dress? 🙂

    • kilax says:

I might have to. The part where he talks about how none of us are really important kind of ties in to a post I wrote yesterday but didn’t publish because I was tired and the post ended up being a bit incoherent.

Cell phone and point and shoot are the way to go if you don’t want that detail. I am surprised Steven’s camera had more detail than the officials, too! Although, maybe if I paid for the download it will show more?! I will not be finding that out 😉

Ha ha ha! We have not looked at bridesmaids dresses yet! Maybe she will make me wear a shawl. Or maybe I will just look completely goofy with that tan! I normally look goofy for one reason or another, so it won’t be that big of a deal 😉

      • Anne says:

Ah, so was that the bit about everyone wanting to be snowflakes?

I like a nice shawl – my cousin sported one in my wedding, and I thought it really added to her dress! And the goofy tan may take away from your overall goofiness 😉

And I don’t want photo detail, it’s less for me to edit out later HAHA 🙂

        • kilax says:

          Hee hee hee. Yes!

I think the right shawl can be really cute! Makes sense for a Nov wedding… I wonder if it would work in June. Either way, I am so excited to see what my snis comes up with! She has great taste and a knack for making things come together 🙂

We know our photos next week will be AWESOME.

          • Anne says:

Well yes, I’ll tell Bob to cover his cell phone camera lens with vaseline so the pics will be extra flattering 😉 My race pics are typically terrible, so I’m excited to finally have some fun ones!

  5. Yay for us time!!! Have fun! I hope Stephen likes racer back tans too. 😉

  6. Rachel says:

I get that cellulite look in race pictures too. We like to call it getting caught on the ‘down bounce’ – my cheeks and boobs are victims as well. 😉

Tan lines – hah. I find that if I do put suncreen on I avoid the red and just go straight to (kinda) tan. I have a lovely ‘ring around the ankle’ from the marathon when I wore calf sleeves and low socks and a tiny band of skin was showing.

Have a wonderful weekend with Steven!

    • kilax says:

Ha ha! I will have to play closer attention to the down bounce with the girls. I wear my sports bra a size too small to keep every intact. Maybe that helps?! 😛

LOL! You must post pictures of your ring around the ankle!!! (P.S. That is why I do not like to wear calf sleeves – I don’t want an even more bizarro leg tan!)

  7. Your tan lines are fantastic haha! And kudos to you for updating your photo frame each month..I don’t know if I could keep up with it as well as you do! Have a GREAT weekend– you guys deserve some couple time!

    • kilax says:

I just LOVE photos! I am a bit obsessive about labeling and filing them… so I really enjoy adding them. But it takes about an hour and this was the first day I found the time. Crazy! I am anxious to add June in! Already so many fun memories.

Hey! We need to meet up for a run soon 🙂

  8. Declan says:

That raceback pic is epic! You should work on putting a message for the wedding into the tan! I am trying to avoid getting too many different tan lines. Short sleeve tan line, watch, and shorts of course. My wife things the waist is hilarious, brown back, white bottom. Maybe I need to go LMFAO style and tan my cheeks. I tend to get red first on my shoulders, feet, and my upper back.

    Enjoy your time with Steven!

  9. Heather says:

Yeah, the Chrome issue works now – sorry, forgot to mention it!

I’ve decided race photos are just never cute. I’ve had cute snaps of me running, but race photographers as a general rule don’t get them – they get the moment I happen to have tucked my chin to scratch the top of my head, or have my mouth open to say something, or whatever other weird awkward moment there is, lol. I like mine from my recent half, because you can see me grinning most of the way, but at the same time, they are pretty much not flattering and especially with the baby bump I feel like most of them just make me look morbidly obese, lol.

As for burning and not – I don’t even know any more! As a kid I tanned, darkly. Then I stopped going in the sun when I started getting sun headaches. Now those have passed and I burned while I was a sun avoider, but I seem to have tan lines now without a burn?! I am teh confused.

  10. Cellulite is the new sexy. Get on board.

A lot of my photos are like that – sexy – and I think it has to do with the force of the ground on the leg reverberating in the flesh. The more reverberation, the harder you were working. Obviously. And I’m not working hard right now because I refuse to check my voicemail. Pshaw.

I’m a redhead. I burn. But thanks to running regularly, I now turn a nice ecru color rather than my normal paste.

    • kilax says:

Ewww. Voicemail. Yucky. Just email, peeps! Ha ha hahahahahahahahahaha.

How is studying going? OMG the practice questions on the musculoskeletal injuries chapter PISSED ME OFF.

  11. I tend to turn red first and then tan but I was surprised that I just tanned in Denver. Woohoo!!

I had a weird picture like that from the Goofy Challenge when I was coming down a hill. I think it might just be the skin moving around the muscle?? Who knows. It was the first and only time I’ve ever seen a picture like that including looking at my gait analysis in slow motion.

    Have an amazing weekend!

    • kilax says:

That must be it! Skin is supposed to move! If my skin was tight it would look scary 😉

Have a great weekend too 🙂

  12. Kim says:

I’m with Kimberly – I think it’s the reverberations going up your leg. Or that’s what I tell myself. 🙂

Have fun with Steven this weekend!

  13. EmilyJ says:

Yay for couple time!! Hope you two crazy kids have fun 🙂

  14. Erin says:

Whatever lens that is that Stephen used I will be telling Jason not to use, mmkay? There are some things my body does that I don’t need to know about. Although, I don’t see it in the Milwaukee pics on either of us.

I get a little pink but not like lobster red. And then it turns to a tan within 24 hours or so. Yay for Sicilian heritage!

Hope your weekend is awesome! Take lots of pics so you can put them in the frame at the end of the month 🙂

  15. I used to be an insta-burner, but over the past couple of years I’ve found that I’m much more likely to tan than burn. That might be do to my zealous use of sunscreen, though. I worked at camp for two summers, and sunscreen + bug spray was my second skin from June through August. I didn’t get *too* much color during those summers since I was a straight up sunscreen Nazi, but I would turn slightly less translucent. And MAN do you get awesome tan lines as a camp counselor. The watch tan, the shorts tan, the t-shirt tan, the socks tan, the friendship bracelet tan (that was my personal favorite)…epic. Almost as good as when I played soccer, because nothing says attractive quite like the six inch tan you get on your legs on the tiny area between your shorts and shin guards. So great.

  16. Sizzle says:

I burn super easy. I try not to get too much sun because melanoma scares me!

  17. Mica says:

I love the digital photo frame idea! I’ve never gotten into them because having to exchange the photos kind of stressed me out, but doing it at regular intervals (having a system!) sounds so satisfying. I’m way too negative in everyday life (I hope this changes when I get a job….), so having a small exercise that reminds me of fun things I’ve done sounds like such a good idea. Nice one, Kim! Now, if only i hadn’t just purged my digital photo frame….crap.

  18. martymankins says:

I used to get tan without burning or getting red first, but in the last 10 years, I so the first tan of the season as turning red/burned first then I tan all summer long without red or burning.
