Training Week 172

By , February 3, 2013 11:43 am

Highlight of the Week: Feeling really strong on most of my workouts. And getting my mileage back up! The December running streak inadvertently killed my high mileage/endurance, since I was just running a 5K or so each day.

Notes:

  • I had a long break between my Tuesday 5:00 am run and Thursday 5:00 pm run… that felt weird (but I am sure was good for me)!!!
  • I’ve always thought I powered more with my right leg than my left, and I really noticed it during cycling. I better be careful I don’t get super imbalanced!
  • I posted this article on my Facebook page, but thought I would share it here too – Running with the 4-8-12 Rule. The premise is, exercise four hours a week to build a baseline of fitness, 8 to get to the middle of your age group, and 12 to take fitness to the highest level possible.  This info is John Farah’s philosophy (he’s written a memoir and run a lot of races) and it doesn’t exactly fit in with the HHS’s guidelines of 2.5 hours a week! Ha ha. Anyway, 8 or 12 hours seems like A LOT.  What do you think? I sometimes hit in between those two numbers, but I workout because I love it, and am not really focused on … anything. Oops. Okay, that is SOMEWHAT of a lie. My goal 5K is in 3 weeks and I am running a competitive relay in 2 weeks. And my goal half marathon is June 9.
  • Since I posted a link to my Facebook page, make sure to follow me there if you want to read even more blabbering and see more pictures! I’ve been trying to post more.

Super trusted drivers

By , February 2, 2013 10:55 am

I wonder if other drivers see my bike on the back of my car in the winter and wonder if I am taking it somewhere to use outside? Ha ha ha. They probably see the slick on the back tire and know that is not the case.

We got some snow last night (!!!) so before I drove to my cycling class this morning, I asked Steven for (a refresher on) tips on driving in the white powder. Don’t worry – I am not that super nervous overly cautious driver making everyone go slow in the snow. But driving in the snow is also not my favorite thing! So I always like to get a little refresher from Steven before I venture out in it.

After I left, I was thinking about what a good driver Steven is, and how I completely trust him when I am in the car with him*. And I was thinking… there are not many other people like that in my life. Steven… and my dad? That is probably it. And believe me, I would not expect to be on ANYONE’s list for a super trusted driver.

Ha ha. This week, I had to travel within the suburbs for work. Another coworker drove us there, which was super nice of them, but wow. Just wow. Wrong way on roads, super slow, unconfident** on the highway… I was happy to get out of the car.

Who is on your list of super trusted drivers? Are you a pro at driving in the snow?

Alright, it’s kind of mean, but if you want, you can tell me who is NOT on your list of super trusted drivers, too. I am NOT going there though!

*And with everything else in life, ha ha.
**Dude. Is this not a word? Is it inconfident? Why am I so confused?

Friday Question #225

By , February 1, 2013 7:50 am

What position do you tend to sleep in? Do you fall asleep one way and wake up another? Does it depend on the night?

Data advises that as long as you get 18 hours of sleep a day, it doesn’t really matter how or where.

As I continue with a whole month of restless nights (due to vivid dreams) I am looking more in to the way I sleep. I found this article with a cool infographic explaining the benefits and disadvantages of certain sleeping positions (sleeping on your stomach can constrain your neck, sleeping on the back is bad for snoring, you shouldn’t sleep on a side that you have shoulder issues with, etc.).

According to the article (which surveyed a very small amount of people), it is most common to start on the side, then the back is next most common, then the stomach. But, people change positions between 3 and 36 times a night (with the average person changing 12 times).

I can contribute to those “findings” – I prefer to start sleeping on my right side. But I know I move a lot, and usually wake up on my back!
