Studying is… out of style

By , February 23, 2013 10:39 pm

For about a month, the only “fun” reading I’ve been doing is blogs. The rest of my reading time is spent studying for a professional exam. At least an hour most days. Ideally more. I fell quite a bit behind while I was in NYC. Oops!

Data helps me study… by sitting on my notes.

This reminds me so much of college. No FUN reading! No magazines! No non-study material books! Minimal newspaper. Don’t glance at that new issue of Running Times! Maximize your reading time to study!

Ughhhhhh.

If you don’t see me commenting, please come rescue me from my other reading.

Were/are you good at studying? How many times do you have to reread things for it to sink in?

Ugh, it’s an embarrassingly high amount of times for me – usually I read something three times to remember it, along with taking notes and doing practice quizzes.

  1. achhhhhh studying…Noooooooooooo!!

I’m not one of those “naturally” smart people..I’ve got to study A LOT and work really, really hard to get the grades. Gosh, the memories. It sucks. hang in there!!

I hope you do well on your exam!
I actually enjoy studying (as long as it’s something I’m interested in).

I love that your big picture is donuts. You’re funny. 🙂

Bummer about the big test. When is it so you’re done studying? I’m taking a grad class right now and it’s 100x harder than it would have been in college. So weird to re-engage the academic side of your brain once you’re out.

  4. I was really good at studying when it was a subject I liked 🙂 I am a perfectionist, so I studied no matter what, but it wasn’t always easy. I had friends who never studied and still did well and it drove me nuts!

As an English major, I felt like I spent 5 years reading only things I had to read. When summer would come, I would load up on easy beach reads as a nice escape from the school grind.

All I do everyday is read and read about different political systems! Lol. The best way for me to study is by re writing the material i learned and reading it out loud to myself! Love the donut picture. Good luck on the exam. 🙂

I’m really glad that Data is being super helpful- pretty much like always though!!! He is such a handsome kitteh you can’t be mad at him though!!
How much longer til the exam?
    =^..^=

  7. Kristina says:

I used to like studying a lot, but oh my how I’ve gotten so lazy!
Good luck with the exam – I hope it goes well.
*And on an unrelated note, those donuts look amazing!

I like to study things I’m interested in. Fortunately all of my classes consist of nursing, so I’m good. Studying does not come naturally to me, and I when I find I cannot focus, I walk away and come back.

I always organize my notes on 3×5 cards, and I take them with me wherever I go. I study between patients at the office and at lunch too.

    Good luck on your exam!

I need to leave during that focus point too. Good tip! And studying as I go! I have a cool app on my phone that helps me study 😉

I’m like Michelle, I enjoy studying things that interest me. The advantage of being an English major in college was that I was usually reading interesting (for me) books.
I always loved art so I thought I’d do well in Art History. WRONG. Me + anything that requires memorizing dates = FAIL. I can tell you painted something, but I sure can’t tell you when.

    Studying ugh!

I hated studying for my accounting classes…. Pretty dry boring material. Id have to read it multiple times for it to stick. I can only imagine how studying for the CPA exam will be in a few years.. Ok not going to think about that.

Hope the info you’re studying Is at least interesting- that seems to make studying much easier and dare I say enjoyable 🙂

Good luck with your studying. Joey is studying for a professional exam as well.
I used to be good at studying (no idea now since it’s been years since I studied for anything). I always have to read things and take notes, then review the notes for it to sink in. It takes me forever to read things for understanding. I usually go over things several times and that helps me remember/understand (read: not be too distracted to understand what I’m reading).

I definitely know how it goes to have the only fun reading being blogs. I have missed reading books for fun. I have slowly had a little more time for reading but that will go away for a little while with studying for boards. I have to say I am not good at studying even though it has been my life for the last 8 years.

  13. Erin says:

I’m pretty good at studying but I can’t remember things after I take a test! It’s like my brain only holds on to information for just as long as it needs to!

  14. Maggie says:

I was TERRIBLE at studying, and had a hard time with reading comprehension, at least when it came to super boring textbooks. By my last year of college, I wouldn’t even do the readings, because I felt like they were a waste of my time. I just took really diligent notes during lectures. All of my professors lectured on whatever they tested on, so I still did well. And by the time I got to my higher level classes for my major, most of our grade was based on projects and papers anyway.

    • kilax says:

Most of my stuff was projects the whole time, and your comment has made me remember how I sometimes wish I was being tested based on memorization!

      • Maggie says:

I had a lot of trouble absorbing what I was reading. My eyes would move over the words, but I’d get to the end and wouldn’t remember a thing. Plus I feel like I’m a slow reader. So I just decided it was a waste of my time anyway.

  15. Believe it or not, I actually love(d) studying! I was such a pro is high school and college – I could easily study for 8 hours straight. Nowadays I wonder if, when I return to grad school, I’ll ever be able to have a study mojo like that again!

    Good luck with studying!
