Friday Question #223
Which television series do you think are worth watching a second (third? fourth?) time? Which television series do you think are NOT worth watching a second (or first?) time?
This is an odd question for me to ask because I do not watch much television, and when I see a series, it’s on DVD! However, I watched Sex and the City over and over when I lived in Rome. And we recently started rewatching Downton Abbey, and it’s even better the second time around!
There are a few series I have tried to get in to with no luck – The Walking Dead and The West Wing being the most recent.
Bonus question – any television series I should check out on Netflix?
When I work from home, Steven and I watch shows together during our lunch break. We started with Star Trek: The Next Generation, then went to Downton Abbey… hmm. Seems like I am missing one.
I own and have re-watched…
My So Called Life
Dawsons Creek
Felicity
Arrested Development
Dexter
I will also re-watch 90210 until I am blue in the face.
I’ve haven’t seen any of those except for one episode of Dexter! I think Felicity is on Netflix… hmmm.
My So Called Life is on Netflix and I have watched a bit of it (Joey doesn’t want to watch it so I watch it when he’s at work sometimes).
I’ve seen most of Dawson’s Creek. It is (was) on Netflix as well.
I second Arrested Development and Dexter but I haven’t been able to keep up with Dexter since we don’t get movie channels anymore.
I really don’t watch much TV these days. I don’t think it’s all that great lately! I’ll still watch Grey’s Anatomy though.
Your pic just reminded me of my faaaave tv show of all time that I STILL watch – Seinfeld!!!
Friends is always good multiple times, as is Arrested Development. I’ve only seen Gilmore Girls once, but I bet it would be good again.
Start watching portlandia on Netflix. It’s really funny! Also my favorite tv show even though It ended 7 years ago is The West Wing.
I looooove Gilmore Girls to rewatch! Also SATC. The new Carrie Diaries show is pretty good too! We’ve been watching Portlandia and Homeland seasons lately. They balance each other out!
We love 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, Community, How I Met Your Mother, and probably others I can’t think of. Some of these are on Netflix except Community. We now own the first two seasons because we love that show so much.
We tried to get into the Walking Dead too since so many of our friends love it but it just didn’t do anything for us.
Our newest Netflix watch is Twin Peaks. I’d never heard of it before but it’s definitely different (and keeps us interested).
I’ll re-watch: Arrested Development, Parks & Recreation, Seasons 1 & 2 of Grey’s Anatomy, and West Wing (bummer that you didn’t get into it!). And I second Jillian’s recommendations for Dawson’s Creek and My So-Called Life too, though I haven’t watched either in a while myself.
And for the bonus, check out Revenge! Seriously, it’s really good. And I agree with Christina, Portlandia is so funny! They just finally added season 2 to Netflix too. Scandal has been on our queue for a while too, so I think that’ll be my next new show.
We watched Entourage on Netflix. We really liked it.
Is Mark Wahlberg in it?! <3 <3 <3
It’s an old one, but my favorite show of all time was The X-Files! Especially good through the first 5 seasons.
That’s a good idea! I always liked catching episodes of it here and there when it originally aired!
I highly recommend Prison Break and 24 if you are into action/suspense/mindblowing awesomeness. Rules of Engagement is also really hilarious in my opinion, along with Modern Family. I think the majority of those are on Netflix, too!
Veronica Mars
The West Wing
Wonderfalls
Sports Night
Funny you mention Sex and the City, because I’m slowly working my way through the entire collection – I’m going to be in tears when it’s over! I also own Seinfeld and watch it repeatedly, as with The Office, but only seasons 1-3.
My husband and I have been into Portlandia via Netflix lately. It’s pretty funny and quirky.
Friday Night Lights is DEF worth watching again! Love it. I’m currently rewatchign Dawson’s Creek..def NOT worth watching again. It’s way better when you’re 16…
I prefer to watch tv shows via Netflix because I lose interest when a series goes on summer hiatus. But I don’t really like rewatching an entire series (an episode here or there, sure). Although, I did enjoy rewatching a bunch of West Wing episodes now that I have a better understanding of what’s going on, or, at least, enough to knowledge to ask questions.
I didn’t think I was going to like Game of Thrones but I found I really enjoyed it! And, of course, I watch Bones and Mythbusters (does that count?). We enjoyed the first season of American Horror Story (haven’t seen the second one yet).
i frequently rewatch walking dead and game of thrones and madmen. I am trying to rewatch Lost right now, but it is just as hard as it was the first time…
We just polished off season seven of Dexter during our free ShowTime weekend. Homeland and Sleeper Cell are both really awesome as well.
Arrested Development I could watch a million times. Dexter, Shameless, My Name Is Earl, Breaking Bad are all great series too.
I rewatch Buffy the Vampire Slayer (of course) and Angel. We have also rewatched Entourage and the Sopranos.
I didn’t get in to Mad Men or In Treatment. Abandoned partway through.
I agree with Kelsey… you and Steven would probably really enjoy Friday Night Lights. It’s wonderfully written and acted.
Arrested Development is soo good and so is Mad Men! I also really liked Nip/Tuck but it was one of those “so bad it’s good” kinda things.
I could watch Friends all the time! I watch it whenever I see it on TV. I also love Home Improvement! SO GOOD! Sex and the City – still haven’t seen all of them but love them! Also Law and Order. Just always love to watch that. Recently gotten into Castle and The Mentalist. I guess I love dramas and the old comedy shows. The new comedy shows are TV are so dumb I cant stand them.
I’ll rewatch 24 and CSI, and don’t even get me started on how much Friends and That ’70s Show I can watch. haha
Since we signed up for Netflix streaming a few months ago, we’ve watched all of Lost, Weeds, The Office, and The Walking Dead. I (as in by myself, my husband can’t STAND it!) watched all the seasons of Glee. I’ve watched most of the Bernie Mac Show, and was in the process of watching Married with Children and 3rd Rock from the Sun when they pulled them from streaming! F’ers.
You should watch Weeds!
I love Gilmore Girls. I own all the DVDs and will watch it whenever it’s on TV. Oops…
Sports Night.
Roswell.
The West Wing (although that one takes a while).
Firefly.
Newsroom.
Millennium.
Hmmm…. 3 Sci-Fi shows and 3 Aaron Sorkin shows. Kind of on the opposite ends of the spectrum. The Sorkin shows are even stranger when you consider that I don’t really like sports, news shows or politics 🙂
Have you seen In Treatment? I absolutely loved that. And an old one I loved and would watch again was Northern Exposure.
And we just started watching Homeland and after two episodes I am hooked. Love Claire Danes.
I haven’t! What is it about?
Sex and the City is my hands-down favorite. Adam loves NCIS and Seinfeld. Many people swear by 24. I knew someone who was hugely into Nip/Tuck, but I found that show way to be way too much to digest.
I keep hearing so, so, SO much about Downton Abbey, and I don’t even know what it is about!!! Apparently I really need to work on my pop culture knowledge…
Dowton Abbey is a British Masterpiece Theater show about this family in in the early 1900s. The show is about the family in this beautiful estate and the staff that serves them. It’s so well done – acting, costumes, sets, the story… it’s addictive. We just finished rewatching season 1 😉
If you haven’t seen “Game of Thrones”, it’s addictive. Unfortunately, only Season I is on Netflix.
We also just wrapped up Season II of “Boardwalk Empire”. I didn’t just LOVE season I, but Season II was great.
If you like British mystery-type shows, “Foyle’s War” is still one of my favorite series out there. Seasons I and II are a bit predictable, but then it becomes much more complex and interesting.
Finally, if you like crime dramas and haven’t seen “The Wire”, it is a MUST see. I felt like crying when we watched the last episode because I was so sad that it was over. Pathetic, I know. We’ve talked about watching the series again – it is just so, so good and totally heartbreaking.
Ooo! I think Steven has a copy of The Wire that his brother gave him and he quite liked it 🙂
I liked “Lost,” and we have all six seasons on DVD. I’ve been toying with the idea of rewatching the entire series so I can try to figure it out. It’s a huge time commitment though, so maybe not.
I’m really into “Downton Abbey” these days, too! And some people have said good things about “American Horror Story,” but I think it would freak me out. And um….that’s about all the TV I watch.
Oh! I have heard about American Horror Story but think it would freak me out too. 🙁
I’m catching up on all 2013 posts, so I feel like I have a million things to say, (first, hi!!! sorry I’m an absent bad friend, but hi!!)
1. To watch on Netflix – The Riches. Best show of all time and it got cancelled too soon. If you like Breaking Bad, you should like it.
2. To track your books read, you should join Goodreads! It’s great to find books you want to read too – I think I have 150+ to-read books right now. oops.
Ooo, is that the one with Minnie Drive and Ricky Gervais?
I think I had a Goodreads account! Maybe I should look in to it more, lol.
The 2 tv series that I tend to rewatch are FRIENDS and How I met your Mother. I like seeing what other people like to watch…I need some new stuff to watch on netflix
I loveeeee Freaks and Geeks. It was a short-lived TV show but it was amazing! I highly recommend it! I’ve seen the entire series several times.
Get Smart, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, Jackass, The Critic, Beavis and Butt-head… those are just the ones off the top of my head.
