Tickle Fight

It’s not what you think.

Steven and I have been watching The Tudors* on Netflix. One night, we were watching an episode with a particularly graphic torture scene. I had to get up and leave. And then I had a hard time falling asleep. Because I am a BIG BABY and cannot watch anything remotely graphic, especially if it is torture. I even had to turn my eyes away during Lawless** on Friday.

Steven realizes I cannot handle these types of scenes, so lately he has been telling me to cover my eyes, then talking through the scene, telling me the characters are having a tickle fight. Ha ha ha. At least that distracts me!

Seriously though, what is wrong with me?! Why does it bother me so much?! Why do the images play on repeat in my head?

Does anyone else have to cover their eyes during violent scenes in movies/shows?

*Or as we call it, The Tootely Toot Toots.
**First time we ever rented a movie on the Apple TV. Fun!

  1. I’m the same! I can’t watch anything graphic and I will NEVER, EVER , sit through a scary movie of any type. Too many nightmares..I can’t torture myself like that!

  2. OMG, I am the SAME way! I have to cover my eyes and close my ears so I can’t hear it! My honey knows I’m that way too, so he always tells me when to close my eyes. I haven’t seen The Tudors, but we watched 24. Lots of torture!

  3. Heather says:

OMG, my husband won’t even take me to see scary movies b/c I’m such a baby. I cover my eyes watching Dexter!!

  4. Christina says:

I am okay with torture scenes (as I like Dexter) however I am a huge wimp when it comes to horror movies. One time I saw Cabin in the Woods at the Theaters and I almost had a sob/scare fest because I was freaking out so much. There is something wrong with me I know it. haha ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. gina says:

I’m the same way with graphic scenes. I cover my eyes and ask Steve to tell me when it’s ok to open them again. You can’t unsee things!

  6. Courtney says:

I am not too bad with graphic scenes but anything that could potentially involve an animal getting hurt or something bad happening to the animal- I close my eyes and plug my ears and repeat something silly outloud so I can’t hear. David always makes up something funny like, oh, the cat bit him and ran away. Like Gina said, you can’t unsee things!!
    =^..^=

  7. Christina says:

I don’t like watching anything graphic either. If I do see something graphic (or hear a graphic story) it doesn’t leave my head for a loooooooooooong time. Hate it. I have to cover my eyes during movies like that too. And Will tells me when to look again (unless he forgets..).

  8. You know my feelings on this subject! I don’t like watching violent scenes or scenes where people are doing drugs. This has always made me uneasy, all through growing up. I thought I would grow out of it, but that is not the case. There are certain movies I will never watch again for those exact reasons.

    • kilax says:

Ooo! I am happy you mentioned the drug thing! That really bugs me too and I thought I was just a weirdo (okay, I am).

      • Pulp Fiction was on in the background the other day (um, not really a great background movie) and I had to get up and leave the room during this one scene with Uma Thermon (sp?)… Do not like watching drugs in movies. I guess my mom never had to fear that I would be doing that kind of thing.

  9. Melissa says:

I’m a huge Dexter fan and love scary movies but admit I’ve never actually watched Dexter do any of his kills (I always divert my eyes or cover them) and the same in scary movies if I can sense it’s coming. I also can’t watch people give injections on TV (in either in a medical or drug use situation) but the weird part about that last fact, is that watching a medical injection or surgery in person doesn’t bother me.

    • Christina says:

Melissa, I love Dexter too! I guess his kill scenes are not graphic enough to bother me. If they showed him cutting up the bodies … that would be a different story. I can’t watch injections either! In real life or on TV.. Or watch stitches being placed.. Barf-o-rama!!

  10. Our daughter’s that way, the boys totally opposite. Maybe it’s a girly thing. ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Kandi says:

That kind of stuff doesn’t usually bother me but then again, I often forget everything after watching it.

  12. I cannot watch TV where there is an IV or someone giving or taking blood. I can easily watch someone getting or giving a shot, but anything else with needles makes me want to run away.

  13. Holly says:

I actually have to cover my eyes if there’s vomiting. At all. Josh tries to warn me, and if people are at a party and drinking a lot I’m always prepared, but sometimes it just comes out of nowhere! I have a serious anxiety problem around the heaving motion. My heart is racing just typing this.

  14. sizzle says:

I can’t watch scary, gory stuff like that. Darcy enjoys those kinds of movies sometimes but he watches them when I am asleep because he knows I get freaked out!

I also can’t watch any shows where there is cruelty to animals. (Re: animal hoarding)

  15. Kristina says:

Yup, totally there with you. I tried to watch “The Walking Dead” and just could not deal. So frustrating because it is a great series but not for me.

  16. I can handle some graphic things but I cannot watch anything that involves UFOs/aliens nor can I watch horror movies with little children. “Paranormal Activity 326” – HECKS NO!!!!

  17. bobbi says:

ok, this may be a little strange, but I have a MUCH harder time watching someone in an uncomfortably embarrassing situation than I do watching violence. It makes me physically uncomfortable, and if I’m home, I get up and leave the room if I know it’s coming. I am a weirdo.

  18. Erin says:

I don’t like violence for the sake of violence. Movies like Saw or Hostel or things like that. If it’s part of the plot I’m fine. There are a few specific types of violence I don’t like to watch but they’re pretty specific. Scary doesn’t bother me, either. I think you’re just really empathic!

  19. Kayla says:

Violence doesn’t seem to bother me but I cover my eyes at a lot of dirty scenes – which is weird because NONE of my friends would describe me as modest or prude! haha!

  20. diane says:

P and I were just talking about this the other day in relation to Quentin Tarantino movies. I can handle ridiculous, over-the-top violence (i.e. Kill Bill) or rapid-fire (pun intended) gunfights. But I cannot handle rape or torture, so I have to leave the room for “Bring out the gimp” and I will never, ever watch Reservoir Dogs.
Also, don’t see Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I thought I was going to have to leave the theater. In fact, if I wasn’t there with a friend, I probably would have. ๐Ÿ™
I guess prolonged suffering or pain is what really gets to me?

    • kilax says:

Ahh, I think we are VERY similar. I can do the over-the-top stuff too. Like, I loved Machete! And I did see both versions of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Had to look away. And that chair torture scene in Casion Royale? UGHGHHH.

  21. Amy says:

I can’t stand any violent scenes with knives or swords… totally gives me the creeps!

  22. Who took that picture, Data?!

  23. ChezJulie says:

Good thing Steven is there to “interpret” for you.

Now I feel weird because I have no problem watching Dexter, 24, injections, sex scenes, etc.

  24. I hide behind a blanket or close (I just wrote clothes, I’m losing my mind!) my eyes and plug my ears during scary parts of movies. I hate scary movies and generally refuse to watch them. My boyfriend always makes fun of me for hiding behind the blanket and tries to pull it away from me. Then I just leave the room.

  25. Emily says:

I totally relate. I purposely avoid watching movies or reading books that are very graphic or violent because it bothers me for days. As a result, I haven’t seen a lot of the “classic” movies like The Godfather just because of certain scenes within. Ugh.

    • kilax says:

Hmm. I could actually stand the Godfather. I wonder why that is! I do recommend #1 and #2. But I have still not seen Pulp Fiction and don’t think I ever will! Scar Face was too much for me too.
