Helicopter Ride!
My first one!

In April we were lucky enough to get to fly around Chicago in an airplane… and on Sunday we toured Chicago in a helicopter! And you can get much closer to buildings in a helicopter than an airplane*!
We could actually see people on the observation deck at the Hancock!
Have you ever gone on a helicopter ride before?
Like I said, it was my first time, but Steven had been before. But we both thought it was fantastic and had a ton of fun. Now I want to do it again! We got to see so many familiar sights up close:
Okay, President Obama’s House is not a “familiar” sight.
I think my favorite part was when we went out to the lakefront and flew really low along Lake Shore Drive. The perspective on the city was like no other!
And the ride was so smooth. I think this is my new preferred form of transportation. Ha ha ha.
If you could tour a city by helicopter which city would you choose?
You guys know me – NYC – and I am going to be there in a few weeks… hmm. Or maybe Rome, since I used to live there and am very familiar with it – I think part of the excitement is seeing things you recognize!
*I think we had to stay 2000 feet away from the buildings in the airplane.
Those views are incredible!!
Whoa, this is amazing! I LOVE Chicago!!
Awesome photos! That looks like so much fun!
I’ve never been in a helicopter before. I sort of wanted to when we went to Hawaii (you get to see portions of the islands that people can’t drive to) but it was expensive. My parents went in one over Niagra Falls a while ago. They loved it! I think my dad actually rode in a helicopter before he even rode in a plane!
So jealous! I always see those things go through on living social… maybe it’s time I stop buying massages and get on board with the helicopter ride?
Hahaha, I’m so with you on the Living Social / Groupon massages.
It look like an amazing day for a heli ride! I love all your pictures, especially the last one where you can see the reflection of the buildings in the water! Would you do it again? With me? How did you like flying in a helicopter.
I didn’t even notice the shadow of the buildings! How cool! I would totally do it again. We are going on 12/17 Girls Day, right?!??!?!!!??!?!!?
HOW FUN! NEXT TIME BRING ME ALONG!
Awesome photos. I think that stretch of the lakefront in the second to last picture is where I ran this morning. I took my Sandy pictures there. Was this a Groupon helicoptor deal? What company was it? I see those now and again. Looks like something I’d like to do.
It was a Groupon deal, through Rotor Zen, which flies out of Midway. They did a great job!
So pretty!! I would love to see the city that way!
Niiiice. What company did you go through? I’ve never been in a helicopter, but years ago, when we were up in Michigan, my parents took my brother and I on a little small plane (not sure what kind) tour along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Since I’ve never toured a major city, I would pick Chicago first.
We went with Rotor Zen, out of Midway. I love tours in little planes! I bet that was a lot of fun 🙂
How cool! I need to do this! Love your pics too.
oh my gosh, that looks beautiful from up there!
I’ve never been on a helicopter ride before. I would LOVE to do NYC too!!
I can’t think of a better city than Chicago to see by helicopter with all those amazing historic skyscrapers!
Glad they made you guys wait for a nice, sunny day! The views are amazing.
That’s so cool! Your pics are great!
So cool! I love these pictures, looks like you had a perfect day to do this! And you probably just about flew over my apartment!
I’ve been in a helicopter once – after white-water rafting through the Royal Gorge in Colorado, we got to take a helicopter through it! It was AWESOME! It’s definitely a cool way to see things. If I could go again, it’d have to be in Hawaii. Or maybe the Grand Canyon.
Oh my gosh! That sounds so so so so cool! Did you guys do it that way because it was the best way to get there or was that just part of the tour?
The helicopter ride and rafting were totally separate – we just did it because someone at the raft shop mentioned it, and we couldn’t pass it up.
Very cool! We did this in Hawaii a few years ago. It was expensive as crap, but it was worth it getting to hover over and look down into a volcano! AWESOME!
Oh my gosh, how did you arrange a helicopter ride for yourself!?!?!? I’ve never been in one but would LOVE to try it. The world is just so much different seen from the aerial view – it completely changes your perspective on everything! Love love LOVE the pictures!!!
It was a groupon I snagged in October last year and finally got a chance to use!
so cool
Really amazing experience!
Wow, that looks really fun! Were you scared? How tippy/stable was the helicopter? And was it noisy? I feel like I’d think “Oh, pshhh, helicopters are no big thang” and then get ready to board one and freak the F out.
I wasn’t scared, and it felt really stable. I was surprised how smooth it was. And quiet too! Much better than a small airplane. I bet if you got in one the views would be so cool you would forget about being scared 🙂
SO COOL! I went in a little prop plane in the fall when I was young, we were sight seeing and they gave rides to see the fall foliage. But we didn’t get as close to stuff like you. We did take off and land in the water though which was fun!
Ooo! I want to take off and land in the water! Too cool!
Sooooo freaking cool! I love that you guys got to do this. Oh and I totally agree a helicopter ride over Italy would be remarkable!!
I have never been in a helicopter, mostly due to my fear of heights. But as I’ve done with other places and sites, I will have to give it a try someday. Those photos of the sites of Chicago are amazing!
Amazing! I have never done a helicopter ride above Chicago but I’d love to!
What an amazing experience!! I’ve always wanted to go on a helicopter ride, either over a big city (Chicago or NYC) or somewhere like the Grand Canyon. It would be the experience of a lifetime!
I’ve never been in a helicopter, but I think it would be fun! I personally think Chicago is a much prettier city than NYC is, so I’d probably choose Chicago. 🙂
