The Fancy Schmancy Theater

Have you ever been to one of those Fancy Schmancy movie theaters where the seats recline…

you can prop your feet up…

and waiters serve you at your chair?

I hadn’t until this weekend! But I wanted to try it. My sister has been to a few cool theaters in the Kansas City area that offer this style of movie viewing, so she recommended one and we all (me, her, our significant others, and Steven’s dad and brother) saw Argo together Saturday night.

I think there were only 30 seats in the theater, and they were in rows of 6 seats – so we reserved a whole row to ourselves* ! And the row is set up so that you can’t see anyone else except the people in your row. So it kind of felt like our own private little theater!

And, did I mention, you have to be 21 and older to use this theater? And that they serve alcoholic beverages?!

It was really fun, and I felt pampered, with my feet up (boots off), in a comfy chair, with wait staff. There were only a few issues:

  • I got so comfortable I started to fall asleep a bit. Ha!
  • The leather seat made me feel too hot by the end of the movie.
  • Our waiters forgot about us for a bit (you turn on a light for them to come to your chair, and they forgot about our order). My sister said that is not typical.

Overall, we had a great time (and the movie was great) and I would love to do this again! I think it’s too expensive to see every movie this way (in fact, Steven and I usually only see movies when we have coupons), but this is definitely a special treat!

*This is probably really good, as I got a bit giggly (prior to the movie starting), as I tend to around my sister.

I have been to those theaters before. They are so relaxing! I actually fell asleep for 5 minutes until my aunt woke me up. Haha 🙂

The Fancy Schmancy Theater sounds like heaven! I need to try this! I’ll probably fall asleep, but I need to try this!!!

  4. How cool! I think there is a place like this in Rosemont!

  5. I didn’t even know a theatre like his existed! how cool!

(I want to see Argo soon, I hope it’s good!)

that looks SO FUN! I’ve been wanting to go to one for a long time.

    Take me.

I’ve never seen a theater like that before. We have one near us that has two theaters where you can have alcoholic beverages. They have those two theaters roped off and a bar area outside. I’m not sure if they serve you drinks during the movie or not though and I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a movie in those two theaters. We have a theater closer to us that we usually hit up.

  8. That’s really cool! Are there any in the Chicago area?

Yeah, there are a few that I know of – Muvico in Rosemont and iPic Theaters in Barrington. I also know someone who only goes to this kind of theater in the southern burbs and I bet they have them in the city too 🙂

I haven’t been to one exactly like that (no reclining leather chairs) but there are a few in Seattle where they bring you food to your table/seat and also serve booze. I like them!

I’ve only been once to such a cinema. i may be (actually I know I am) really weird, but I didn’t find the chairs too comfortable. They reminded me of dentist’s chairs and I don’t like dentists!

Wow! That is one fancy theater. I’ve been to theaters that serve real food but they weren’t this swanky. What a way to enjoy a movie. Wonder if these theaters take coupons? 🙂

I’ve been to the Hollywood Blvd theater in Woodridge, and it is like this, but we ended up sitting in the very last row, which was bar stools and a counter-like “table.” But we ordered food which was brought to us during the movie. It wasn’t that great though, but maybe I should have ordered something more traditionally “junk” food. (I got a veggie wrap.) We saw The Dark Knight … I definitely recommend doing this for a movie that you don’t have to pay really close attention to, or get really caught up in the plot. A comedy would be best.

I totally agree a comedy would be best. The waiter was talking to us during the intro and I missed it!

I feel like Hollywood Blvd is a step down from this. You don’t get to put your feet up 🙁 The rest of the theater has big office chairs with tables.

    That is REALLY cool!

I’ve never been to one of these because I figured they were a lot of money for something I wouldn’t enjoy. Plus, I know I’d be tempted to eat all the snacks, but then I would just mindlessly eat them all while watching the movie. Maybe I’d do it as a date night thing though!!

If you like going to the movies and don’t want to listen to screaming brats, I think you would like it. But it movies aren’t your thing, then you could pass. 🙂

That’s so cool! I think there’s a few theaters like that out in the western suburbs, and I’ve always wanted to try it. I could be wrong, but I don’t think we do have those types of theaters in the city.

This is in no way fancy, but the best I’ve done is seeing movies at the Brew & View in Lakeview. The seats don’t recline and the floors are just as sticky and gross as other theaters, but it’s only $5 and they have several bars.

There is one similar in Wheaton, but it is for all ages and more than 30 people

  17. I’ve heard of places like this one and really want to go! It’s like you’re watching a movie at home…except you’re waited on and the screen is huge.

Our here in Salt Lake is not that fancy, but we have one that is 21+ and serves alcohol. It’s called Brewvies http://www.brewvies.com/ and it’s pretty cool. On Sunday nights, they show The Walking Dead for free (well, if you drink, it’s not free… lol)

  19. The Linz says:

Oh that sounds so fun! I have never been to a theater like that, but am afraid that I would get too comfortable. I have this problem where I fall asleep at the movies (such an expensive nap) so the recliner would be trouble for me. LOL! But I do love the idea of having a waiter — brilliant!
