Things cracking me up tonight

By , October 22, 2012 6:53 pm

1. I ordered Halloween costumes today for me, Steven and my parents. My parents have no idea what the costumes are. Ha ha ha. This really cracks me up. Here we are last year:

Sorry Dad, this year’s costume might not get you any action:

2. Speaking of my dad, he likes to send me emails when he notices typos on le blog (so, daily). Today’s typo was when I wrote “trow” instead of “row.” For anyone who has ever been to El Famous with me (more of you than it should be, probably), this really cracked me up.

3. I’ve started purchasing holiday gifts. Yes, it is too soon. Because I like to just buy things and give them to people year round, therefore… I have a hard time holding back the gift-giving. I CAN DO IT! I will make it through!!!

3.5. How lame is this? I tried to find the post I wrote on October 1 asking if it was too soon to buy gifts, and I found a post of me asking the exact same question on October 18, 2011. To my credit, I wrote in this year’s post that I ask this question earlier and earlier every year. NO I AM NOT CRAZY.

4. I ordered new arm sleeves. Or so I thought. I got them today. Only them was not “them.” Them was “it.” I got it today. Apparently I needed to order not just one “sleeve,” but two. DUH. How did I miss that?!

5. My passport with my married name came today. Oh my gosh my photo is so so awful. But I am making you wait until tomorrow to see it.

What is making you laugh tonight?

ZOOMA Great Lakes Half Marathon Race Report

By , October 22, 2012 4:59 am

Ahh! I cannot believe the ZOOMA Great Lakes Half Marathon and 5K weekend has come and gone! It seemed so far away when I applied to be an ambassador in June (as an ambassador, I received a free race entry for promoting the race). Then, as some bloggers starting planning the race as as weekend getaway, the race still seemed so far away, because I was so excited about it! But now that it’s passed, I think it is time to plan another destination race with my girlies!

Back row (L to R): Maggie, Bobbi, Kelly, Sierra, Emily, Katie, Kayla
Second row (L to R): Amy, Kelly, Jackie, Marcia, Jenny
Third row (L to R): me, Kelsey
Front row: Erin

The ZOOMA Half Marathon is a point-to-point course that starts in Lake Geneva, WI and ends in Fontana, WI. Since I live somewhat close to the course, originally, Maggie and Amy were going to stay at my house and we were going to drive up race morning for the 7:30 am start. But then Kelly (the Culinarian, back row, above) had the BRILLIANT idea that we get a rental house for the weekend and see how many people we could get to sign up to split the cost of the house. As you can see from the photo above, we did not have a hard time getting people to be interested! So, we soon had group emails, a Facebook page, and spreadsheets to plan our weekend getaway. The house that Kelly found was beautiful and slept 14+ people! Thank you Kelly, for finding the house!

On to the race… I knew going in to it that it was hilly (and the bus ride out to the start confirmed it!). Bobbi and I had planned to run together and just have fun. We were successful! We enjoyed the beautiful course and seeing the impressive homes along it and managed the hills well.

Until mile 11. Mile 11 had a monster 100 foot hill in just .2 miles of distance. That is not much for other people, but it was a lot for us! And the 5K course was the last 3.1 miles of the half. Yikes. I felt bad those 5Kers had to deal with the hill too.

But overall, I was very impressed with how we did. We were having so much fun that the miles just seemed to be ticking by! I love it when that happens during a race! We ran a bit with fellow ZOOMA ambassador Laima around mile 4, and ran in to Kelly (the Culinarian) at mile 10 and finished the race with her!

And the course was beautiful. Hardly any spectators, but that was okay. We really loved seeing the “If this was easy, your husband would be doing it!” sign.

And this was mostly an all women’s race. Hardly any men were running it (only a few). It was interesting to experience an all women’s race! Mostly, it just seemed that everyone was really encouraging, especially on the monster hill (since that was the only out and back portion, the people flying down the downhill encouraged those going up) – not that people are not encouraging at other races as well.

And when you do an all women’s race… you can use a necklace instead of a medal!

Here is what ZOOMA says about their races on their about page, and it could not be any truer:

run. laugh. celebrate.

Imagine a powerful sea of women on the move–encouraging fellow runners, creating unforgettable moments, and celebrating personal running triumphs. Picture a post-race party and expo all wrapped up in one memorable “after-party expo” where these strong goal-oriented women come together for well-deserved celebration.

Until the past few years, I would not have been able to say I had a group of women I wanted to run a race with and definitely not spend a weekend with! I didn’t have close (in relationship and in person) female friends until I met Erin in June of 2009. Then I started meeting more and more local bloggers, and more people in my running club (when I joined in the end of 2010), and now I feel like I have a huge network of pals! And some of us are really close! I never would have thought I would spend a weekend with a house full of women as a grown-up – I thought that was something that I missed in college. But I didn’t! It makes me so happy to have such a wonderful group of caring friends, all with different talents, backgrounds, and interests. What an amazing weekend! I am so happy the ZOOMA race brought us all together for this!*

Do you feel like you have a group of friends with whom you would want to do a weekend getaway?

I probably won’t say much else about that part of the weekend – it was an amazing time of games, food, and lots of chatting! And lots of creation of inside jokes (my fave). We stayed at the house until Sunday morning, when we all sadly departed back to the real world.

I DO have some things to say about the race itself, though! A few pros and cons, if you will:

Pros:

  • Beautiful course
  • Decent on course support (water, sports drink, GUs)
  • Easy to find location
  • Shuttle in the am (from finish-to-start)
  • Fun expo
  • Nice SkirtSports top in swag bag
  • They announced our names as we finished
  • “Celebrities” (from top to bottom, Sara Hall, Sarah Bowen Shea and Dimity McDowell (authors of Run Like a Mother) and Skinny Runner.

From L to R: Jess, Bobbi, Me, Skinny Runner, Sara Hall, Marcia, Meghan, Kayla, Laima

Cons:

  • There were too few porta potties at the half start – 7 for 400 women? Get real.
  • We had to run on the right side of the road for much of the course. It was a bit counter-intuitive.
  • At mile 10 we passed right by the finish to do the last 3.1. Kind of a petty complaint, but… I do not want to run by the finish that close to the end.
  • There was no salty food at the finish (bananas and water, plus a lunch box with a wrap, apple and pasta). I needed salt. My left hand was super swollen (Bobbi actually gave me a salt pack on course and at the finish).
  • The necklace design is so-so, in my opinion.

And just for fun… this will be the last time I wear a white shirt to a race. Ha! That is no one’s fault but mine!!!

*I had met everyone in the house before, except Sierra, and the three women who stayed with us who were not bloggers.

Training Week 157 / Running (Safely) in the Dark Giveaway WINNER

By , October 21, 2012 3:22 pm

Highlight of the Week: Running a very FUN half marathon with Bobbi (and Kelly, for the last 3 miles!) and not feeling like death on the hills (except the last one – race report tomorrow!).

First things first! Who won the Running (Safely) in the Dark Giveaway by guessing closest to my half marathon time but not going over?! Well, my official time was 2:14:31…

And the closest guesses were Kelsey at 2:14:30 and Paula at 2:14:24! Kelsey and Paula, please email me at kilax@ilaxstudio.com to claim your prize!

It’s really funny that Kelsey was only a second off from my actual time, since she was there to watch me finish the half! She said she was looking at the clock when it was one minute to go from my finish time and wondering where I was… then I showed up! And I ran the whole thing with Bobbi… she was only 5 seconds over! Alright, on to the weekly training recap…

Thoughts:

  • My strength workout was so hard on Friday, it almost inspired me to get serious about losing weight. Almost. I could do so much better if I were at a healthier weight. But that isn’t just exercise for me – it’s mental health too.
  • I had such an amazing time at the ZOOMA weekend, with all the other bloggers! I don’t think I have ever done an girls-only all-weekend getaway, and it was a BLAST!
  • That damn right butt cheek. Sigh.

Friday Question #211

By , October 19, 2012 6:27 am

Do you have business cards for your blog?

And since that question is not answerable for non-bloggers, how about business cards for real work?

I keep meaning to design and order business cards for my blog. My blog name is not easy to remember (maiden name + studio, since I have a design degree) so I thought cards would help when I met people and told them about le blog. But I have not ordered them yet.

I am going away this weekend to run ZOOMA (you can still register in person tonight!!!) with a group of bloggers… and will potentially meet other bloggers I don’t know, so I thought I better whip out some quick business cards at home. My idea for the cards was to use my favorite masthead images, so the cards are not all the same. They’re like collectibles! Which one will you get?!!?! (<– so totally kidding)

Can you tell I cut them myself? Yeah. These will have to do until I get some real ones printed. Ha ha.

As for work business cards… meh. I have them and rarely hand them out.

The Kmart Modeling pics

By , October 18, 2012 6:08 pm

Since you asked

Were you guys expecting more Toddlers & Tiaras?

I have no idea what the story is behind this. Maybe I can get a comment out of my dad’s sister (who is in the pics) to explain it all? My mom said I was modeling Easter clothes.

Random Thoughts Thursday XXIII

By , October 18, 2012 5:01 am
  • My sister is a model! Her design firm entered the COLOR+COUTURE event last Friday in Kansas City. COLOR+COUTURE is an International Interior Design Association (IIDA) event. Models strut the runway wearing fashions made from carpet, tile, wall coverings and more created by local architecture and interior design firms. Here is what my sis said about it: “We were paired with fabric and laminate. I think in years past they [her firm] have been paired up with hard materials like tile or chairs. The theme this year was Avant Garde, and we were trying to go for an Avant Garde Native American theme. There were some really awesome ones there, but ours definitely wasn’t the worst!! I was super nervous, I almost tripped, I forgot to stop on my way back up the runway… But I did it! 😛 It was hosted at Starlight Theatre, which was really gorgeous. It was on their stage, so there were curtains and lighting, etc all over. If you look on Color + Couture’s Facebook page they posted pics of the event space.” Have you ever played model? Apparently I did, when I was 3(?) and my aunt worked at Kmart and they needed some young models. Yes, I have photos of this.

  • Do you think my sister and me look alike? Here are some photos of us doing similar poses for you to base your answer on. Ha.

  • AHH! I cannot wait until my snister* starts planning her wedding!!!
  • I love how our pumpkin turned out! It worked out really well – I created the template, cut it, drew it on, and gutted the pumpkin and Steven carved it. I think we both enjoyed the tasks we did. Makes me want to do it again! Check out the FakeMeats.com Facebook page for a giveaway related to the pumpkin!!! All you have to do is post a pic of your carved/decorated pumpkin for a chance to win some goodies!

  • I think the pumpkin loved me too. Part of it traveled with me to work yesterday, in the bottom of my boots. I was walking, wondering “What is in my boot?!” I was happy it was not one of Data’s toys… and especially not a bug!

  • I am loving seeing all of your guesses for my ZOOMA half finish time! Keep them coming if you haven’t guessed already… or want to do a bonus Facebook post and guess!

Running (Safely) in the Dark Giveaway

By , October 17, 2012 4:45 am

I loved Eat: Watch: Run‘s Guess My Finish Time Giveaway… so I am going to copy it. Thank you, Paula!

The week is finally here… ZOOMA Great Lakes Week!

You can still register until 8:00 pm cst tonight, online (use code GLAMB8 for $10 off the half and $5 off the full). You can also register in person at packet pickup on Thursday and Friday night! A zillion and one bloggers are running this race, and partying after, so let me know if you sign up, or are coming to cheer… or just want to crash the party.

On to business…

I am running the half marathon at ZOOMA. I have no goals for the race, other than to have fun! (Okay, and finish and get my Satya Jewelry necklace!).  So, let’s have a little fun with my lack of a time goal… per Paula’s brilliant idea,  I am having a contest for you to guess my half marathon finish time!

So… the first person to guess closest to my finish time without going over, wins! And! To make it even more fun, I am going to have two winners – a winner and a runner-up. So… you can go all “The Price is Right on People” if you want to guess one second below their time… or one second above. Who knows! Should be interesting!

You probably want to know a little bit about how fast I’ve been running lately? Let me tell you:

  • I feel speedy if I get my pace under 10:00mm these days.
  • You can see all of my race performances here
  • I’ve run three half marathons this year – one at 2:06:11 in May to pace my BiL, one for fun by myself at 2:08:17 in June, and one for fun with Emily at 2:22:52 in September. I’ve gotten slower! And fatter!
  • I am no where NEAR ideal racing weight.
  • My half PR is 1:54:06 from April 2011. I will not be trying to PR.
  • My half PW is 3:16:17 from June 2010 when I had three stress fractures and walked the whole thing. I will not be walking the whole thing.
  • The ZOOMA course is hilly
  • I may or may not run more before and/or after the race.
  • I run best in the 30s (temps, not age).

Yikes! Seems a bit tricky after all that! I hope you will still play along?

On to the prizes!

It’s getting dark out, yo! And runners (all exercisers) need to be safe out there! So, this giveaway is Running (Safely) in the Dark themed.

The winner and the runner-up will each get to choose ONE of the following: 1. Black Diamond Cosmo Headlamp (available in multiple styles), 2. Relax Reflect Skull Cap (available in multiple styles), 3. Nathan Streak Reflective Vest with one Reflective Band. These are funded by… my wallet.

Running (Safely) in the Dark Giveaway Rules

  1. Two readers will win their choice of item 1, 2 or 3. The first place winner is the first person to guess closest to my finish time at the ZOOMA half marathon without going over. The second-place winner is the second closest guess without going over. If someone else guesses the same as you, the guess that was made first will win. If multiple people guess my exact time, the first two guessers will win.
  2. Required to enter the giveaway: tell me your guess for my finish time at the ZOOMA half marathon on Saturday.
  3. Want a second guess? Share this giveaway on Facebook, let me know that you did, and guess a second time.
  4. This giveaway is open until 5:00 PM CST on Friday, October 19.  I will announce the winner on Sunday, October 21 (if not sooner).
  5. This giveaway is open to US residents.

It’s pumpkin time!

By , October 16, 2012 12:02 pm

To carve, not to eat.

Guys. I have not carved a pumpkin in TEN years. Okay. And even then, Steven carved it. Sadness – I thought I knew exactly where a picture of this pumpkin was, and could not find it. DAMMIT why didn’t I have a digital camera back then?! UGHHHHH.

Moving on, we are going to carve one pumpkin for a FakeMeats.com promotion and the other with something else (unless the first one gets messed up, then it’s the backup pumpkin).

When was the last time you carved a pumpkin? What design should we carve in the back-up pumpkin (if it’s not used as the back-up pumpkin, ha)?

World’s Largest Corn Maze Run Race Report (2012)

By , October 15, 2012 9:18 am

Yesterday’s World’s Largest Corn Maze Run is probably the closest I will ever get to completing a “mud” run.

We had an 80% chance of rain in our area all day Saturday and Sunday. When the skies cleared up for the race, I was happy we would not have to run in the pouring rain. Then I got a text from my favorite coworker, who was also doing the race – “It’s muddy.”

“I’ll be okay,” I thought, “I have my trail shoes on!”

Ha ha ha.

I was “okay.” My trail shoes stayed on for the entire race. And… I would call that a success! Because of the way this race is set up (one person starting every 3 seconds), the corn maze path was really beat up by the time we got to run on it. The mud was really thick and deep. With every step, it felt like my shoe wanted to stay in the ground, not lift up with my leg. It made for an interesting challenge! I thought it was fun! But… I was happy when it was over – the last two years I have run this course it has seemed a bit short of a 5K. This year I was like “Please be short. Please be short. Please be short.” Ha ha.

This race is becoming a family tradition though! My brother-in-law has been in town each year this race has been held (2010 and 2011) so we’ve done it each year. And Steven joined us this year (after taking 2011 off to be the official photographer).

So I know we will be back next year. Mud or not!

Have you ever run in the mud… on purpose?

  • I love running in the fall. I feel like I could run forever with the cooler weather.
