Card Hoarder

By , October 4, 2012 6:19 am

I mentioned on Monday that instead of thinking about holiday gifts I should focus on October birthdays, because we have about 40 bazillion. Or, at least enough that we spent $30 on cards at Hallmark on Monday.

Okay, we don’t have 40 bazillion, and there were some non-birthday cards in that $30 bill. What can I say? When I see a card I like, I have a hard time not buying it! And why not, when I have a handy-dandy box (from Hallmark of course) to store all my cards in:

One card I will not be buying though? Uhh…

Do you like to send out cards? Do you stock up on them, like me?

I tend to hunt for the perfect card, so when I am stocking up, it’s usually a specific card for someone’s birthday a few months down the road. I always get my dad’s mom a birthday card with inappropriate animal sayings on it (example: poodles on the front saying to each other “that bitch has had some work done,” then inside, “don’t worry about the haters, happy birthday” or similar), so for awhile I had quite a few of those! Well, until this year when I had two left and liked them so much I sent them both.

  1. We try to make all our cards, often the kids will do it for us!

  2. I am definitely a card hoarder. I love the card aisle and always buy the perfect cards for people when I see them. So I’m usually fully stocked!!!

October is a big birthday month in my family to! Lot’s of cards. The amount you spend is about the month I do to.

my mom is a REDIC card holder. all anyone ever gets her for her bday and xmas is stationary. she LOVES card.

I like her obsession too because then that means I’m more likely to get a card with some $$$ in it from her on a regular basis.

Schweet! We get some random stuff from my mom too. This week she sent us a “Happy Fall” package with yummy soap from Bath & Body Works! I definitely got my card habit from her 🙂

That’s a pretty cool organizer. I like cards but I rarely remember to send them (lame). I bought a bunch of cute animal cards when they were being discontinued at the store I used to work at but I will likely never have a good excuse to use them. A lot of them are ‘missing you’ type cards. I should send them to random people that I know would appreciate them despite the weird meaning.

I think that is a great idea! I try to at least stock up the month ahead on whoever has birthdays or whatever and then always buy a few extra ones in case. I think a card organizer would be an amazing way to keep track though. I usually buy a card and then misplace it before it’s time to send.

is that card in the wrong spot?

I used to be very good about sending cards and wrapping gifts all fancy. Then..I had a kid. Now..no one gets cards unless V makes them.

    • kilax says:

Nope, that card was not in the wrong spot. The text inside was about having a rough year, difficulties, blah blah blah.

  8. Melie says:

huh? people send cards nowadays? I’ve never received or given a card in my entire life, not even an e-card. I think I need to wipe up my blown mind from the counter now…

Is it not common to include cards with gifts in Greece? Or send them in the mail?

      • Melie says:

I honestly don’t know. This might be really selfish and closed minded of me, but since nobody in my family and extended group of friends ever included cards in their gifts growing up, I just assumed that exchanging cards was something of the past. It never occurred to me that people still do that.

One year for Christmas I bought my mom a pretty tin, some nice pens, and then filled it with cards for all kinds of occasions. Now I will occasionally buy some cards and put them in her stocking so she can refill her box. I have some that I’ve bought for specific people and then forget I have them so I don’t remember to send them! Apparently I need an organizer like you!

  10. I rarely buy cards way in advance but I always put a lot of thought into the cards that I buy. I like to find the perfect card for the occasion.

That card holder is really cool though- what a great idea!

I am a card horder too, although not as bad as I used to be. I have one of those fancy card holder boxes too (mine was a gift from my mom though!)!! I love it- it makes it so nice and easy!!!
Lol, I really hope that card was in the wrong spot!! It was kinda funny though… in some sick twisted way!!
    =^..^=

    • kilax says:

It wasn’t in the wrong spot! Isn’t that messed up? And I was browsing the “I’m Sorry” cards a few weeks ago… weird!

      • CourtneyInControl says:

WOW!! I am floored that the card was in the right spot!!! That is just crazy!!! I wouldn’t imagine an anniversary card being under “Difficult Year”!! I was thinking maybe someone just stuck it there to be funny.
        =^..^=

  12. I actually like to buy a bulk of cards in advance so I know I can grab one whenever I need it! I then try to personalize the message so I don’t feel like I sent them something generic

  13. Queenie says:

I buy cards and stock up, too. You never know when you’ll need one and not have time to get it.

  14. Ha I never thought of hoarding cards! Actually, it’s such a smart idea because there is nothing more annoying than having to run out to the store to purchase a last-minute card!

  15. ChezJulie says:

That reminds me… I need to send a card! (Seriously).

I had to investigate this “Difficult Year” card. I suspect it is for people who are unemployed due to the recession. 🙁 Hallmark says:

To meet consumer needs, the Father’s Day line includes a variety of cards for special circumstances, including “Son’s First Father’s Day,” “Husband – Soon to be a Dad,” “Son – Soon to Be a Dad,” “Patriotic Dad,” “Patriotic Grandfather,” “Dad Having a Difficult Year,” “Husband Having a Difficult Year,” and “Loss of Child.”

    • kilax says:

This difficult year was for a difficult year of marriage. Yikes! But it makes sense for Hallmark to provide cards for all occasions, and to be smart and change as society (the economy?) changes!

  16. Emily says:

I totally stock up on cards. I go to Party City with a list of all birthdays and special occasions coming up in the next few months, and buy all the cards in one fell swoop. I will admit that I do also stock up on random wedding cards and baby/wedding shower cards without intended recipients. Those have come in handy many times when time is tight!
