Too early for chili?

By , August 27, 2012 6:13 am

Yesterday was partially rainy and partially cool (low 70s). It was enough to make me feel a little bit chilly when I got home from my rainy run. And it was enough to make me want to wrap up in a blanket on the couch. And drink something warm.

I am so ready for fall.

It’s funny. Last August, I was saying I was sad summer was ending. Not this year. It was in the 90s on Saturday. We were outside for four hours at a farm sanctuary. I felt hot and uncomfortable. I got a sunburn. On the way home from our day of driving all over northern Illinois, I shared a cold weather fantasy with Steven* that included hot drinks, wearing socks, and taking hot baths (all at once or individually).

I am so ready for fall.

Okay. “Fall” weather.**

I convinced Steven that we should make chili for dinner last night, even though it’s not that cold out (and will be in the high 80s today).

That is another thing I am looking forward to about fall/winter – hearty dishes like chili!

Are you anxiously awaiting fall/fall weather? Or do you like the heat?

*I think my love for cold weather worries Steven.
**Let’s hope we get some this year.

Funny that you clarified “fall weather”. I am fine with fall weather coming, but I told P I can’t stand the thought of shorter days and early darkness again. Unfortunately, there’s not really any place to move that would address that part of the seasons changing. Except Alaska, and that’s a bit extreme…

  2. I am very anxiously awaiting the fall weather! And funny enough I’ve been wondering if it’s time for chili yet, too. 🙂 It’s so easy to make great vegetarian/vegan chili and other dishes in the slow cooker. I can’t wait.

Bring on fall! Love the temps, the fall colors, the less-crowded running trails! Yes, chili is also one of my favorite fall/winter dishes. Like to put a bottle of stout in mine…

  4. I’m a mixed bag – I’m sad to see summer go but I love, love, love fall. I’ve got a bunch of new hearty soup recipes I want to try out and fall starts my official baking season. And I found a new pumpkin and cream cheese coffee cake recipe that I simply must make. 😉

I actually bought all the chili fixins while I was at the grocery yesterday!

The ONLY reason I’ll be sad to see summer go is because I’ll miss the abundance of fresh, local veggies. 🙁 Otherwise, summer can suck it.

I wish we could keep the longer days of summer but cut down on the crazy heat. The outdoors needs a thermostat.

As for chili, yesterday was the perfect day for it!

NOM! And cornbread, too! Double nom! Looking forward to fall weather and dishes like chili!

  8. Michel says:

I can’t wait for fall weather either!! And if one more person tell me it’s going to be super hot for Chicago they will not live!

  9. Oh wow… good thinking on the chili! The rainy day was perfect for it. And perfect for being lazy in general. I sort of enjoyed it. 🙂

  10. I love fall! And it’s never too early for chili.

    Love the header photo!

no!! I want summer to last forever and ever and temperature never to fall below 25 degrees (celsius, I can’t speak fahrenheit). Fortunately, September seems to be the hottest month of the Summer around here (unlike June which is always so cold), so I have some summer time left..

  12. I’m one of those annoying people that loves all the seasons. I love the warm summer days, I love crunching on leaves in the fall, I love looking at the snow (not so much driving in it), and I love when the flowers bloom in the spring. So yah, its a little sad that summer is ending, but at the same time, it’s not because I get to look forward to soup and squash and all that fall time goodness.

  13. Amy says:

Not to early for chili! I made butternut squash soup today.

I do love it when the temperatures drop. Living in SoCal has totally skewed my concept of winter/spring/summer/fall, because this area does not follow the traditional patterns (whatever those are). For instance, the beginning of summer usually brings about “June gloom” (foggy and chilly mornings) and fall (September and October) often accompanies the hottest temperatures of the year. So, I no longer view these months as a “break” from the heat.
But I definitely love it when the weather finally changes! I’m not at all fan of high temperatures, so I understand where you’re coming from.

I’m not so much of a chilli fan BUT THAT CORNBREAD looks awesome! 😉

    Happy Monday!

I made mac and cheese yesterday because I have been craving it! Sometimes you just need the warm foods even when its warm! I added in all these summer veggies to the mac and cheese and it turned out great! I am kind of excited for Fall but not for the cold of winter.

  17. Amy says:

Fall is my favorite season so I am definitely looking forward to it!

  18. Losing Lindy says:

Sunday was so nice, I love rainy days like that, esp when you are home.

  19. Mica says:

I never take advantage of summer and all the good, fresh produce. I don’t like salad enough! Fall and winter dishes are much more satisfying, I can’t wait until I can make soups and bread and casseroles for dinner.

  20. Kandi says:

We had chili a few weeks ago. I am ready for fall weather too!! I wasn’t quite ready for it until our beach vacation ended.. now I’m really ready.
