Biweekly Runner Photo Challenge: What do you do with your race medals?

By , June 12, 2012 7:16 am

This week’s challengeWhat do you do with your race medals?  Show us. Even if you get rid of them, show us that.

I’ve only been racing (and placing) for about four years so I don’t have many medals. Right now, they all fit on one medal holder, which I won from Kayla last year.

My medal holder is in my closet. I think it should be the first thing you see when you walk in the house*, but… yeah. It’s in the closet.

One medal gets to be on display in a public area – the medal from my first marathon – Chicago 2010Erin got me this schweet shadow box for Christmas that year.

From what event are the majority of your medals?

I think this is my countdown:

Marathon: 4
Half Marathon: 7**
Nautical 10 Miler: 1
10K (AG placement): 1
5K (AG placement): 9***
5K: 2
Relay: 2
Novelty: 3

*Just kidding. Sort of.
** One half did not have medals.
***A few placements have not had medals.

Wow. I love your marathon display! Awesome.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with your medal display being the first thing you see when you walk in. 🙂

Also, I’m very jealous of all those age group placements! Someday I will get an AG placement. SOMEDAY. (Maybe when I’m 75.)

    • kilax says:

The key to placing in your AG is to run races in small towns, especially if there are races in other close towns the same day 🙂 Believe me, I am not fast 😉

They are all in a box under the spare bed in the guest room. I don’t really display them at all. I have 4 from half marathons, one from the marathon and then a bunch of other ones from college and high school track meets.

  3. Erin says:

Your medals look so colorful all together like that!

What do you mean by Novelty?

    • kilax says:

For Novelty I was thinking about the medal I got for helping with the club race, the medal I got for the GOTR 5K (more participation than anything else), a medal I got for the SMA walk last year… I guess they are medals that don’t mean anything.

You crack me up by saying you don’t have ‘many’. I have two medals. TWO! One from my first 10k back in 2006 and one from my marathon. There is a small chance I earned some back when I used to run when I was in high school but I don’t know where they are if I have them. I guess medals aren’t a big deal for me and go hand-in-hand what I just emailed you about being averse to races that are more expensive.
My two medals (and a dog tag I got from a 2 mile race I ran with Delilah) hang on the bulliten board in my cube.

    • kilax says:

I only say I do not have many because I know people who have been racing a lot longer than me and have many more! 🙂

That is cute that they handed out dog tags for a dog race! 🙂

  5. Johann says:

Really nice display! I’ve been running so long (31 years) I have too many medals to display. Each year I hang the medals for that year everywhere in the house and then take them down 31 Dec. Then I start all over again. Some special medals/trophees or whatever race goodies stay out.

  6. Emily says:

LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!! Right now I am just hanging my medals on various doorknobs around the house. But your medal display looks so impressive. I am very inspired! And I agree, I think that your medal display should be the first thing you see when you enter the house. You’ve worked HARD for those medals and you deserve recognition!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Marcia says:

I beg to differ on the ‘don’t have many’ claim. Love your hanger but yes get it out of the closet…said the girl who has hers in the basement.

  8. ChezJulie says:

I thought maybe Novelty was the cheese girl race.

Mine are all in a box with my bib #s on a shelf in the bedroom closet except the latest one SF10 which is on my bookcase in same bedroom, until I get bored of looking at it. I have one (out of 9) marathon that didn’t give out medals and only one (out of five) 50ks did medals. Bling is good but does motivate me to sign up for a race. Now a buckle at a 50 miler would be nice, one day I hope.

  10. Xaarlin says:

For not racing more than 4 years, you certainly have a lot of bling 🙂 I really like your medal display. My medals are all in a shoebox, and my bibs are all in a folder. I really need to figure something else out.

  11. Pete B says:

I put three marathon medals and one half marathon medal in a shadow box, just like yours. As for the rest of the medals, I threw them in a storage bin in the basement.
