Blah blahing about running shoes

Do you guys track the mileage on your running/exercise shoes?

I started tracking mileage when I got my first pair of Asics Gel Cumulus in October of 2010. If you are really bored, you can look at my shoe mileage stats way down on my right sidebar, and here

I am lucky if I make it close to 300 miles on a pair of shoes. I wear them down really fast. I severely supinate, especially on my left foot – and that shoe gets worn down really quickly. Tracking the mileage has really helped clue me in to when I need to rotate in a new pair of shoes and swap out the old ones.

Tuesday was a new shoe day! Wow! The shoes felt so cushion-y!

Actually, the felt a bit stiff. They will feel good on the next run.

I embarrassingly have a lot of pairs of Asics. The photo below does not include the two pairs in other locations and the one pair in the mail… shh…

I am usually alternating between at least two pairs for running, if not more. Then I use them for other things when I am done with them.

How many pairs of running/exercise shoes do you alternate between?

I gotta say, I love the Asics Gel cushioning. It rocks my world. I am a very happy Asics girl.

I have three pairs of tennis shoes, but none of them would be good for running! I don’t even know if they’re good for working out, and they’re all old. :/

  2. bobbi says:

If you count the pair I use for knocking around in, I have 5 in rotation. 2 running, 1 trail, 1 just for strength class, and 1 just for my everyday shoes.

As an aside, when I was there last with the girls, Julia commented, “wow mommy! Kim has a LOT of running shoes!” 🙂

I love Asics, too! My Gel Cumulus 13s are my long-run workhorses, the cushioning and support is fantastic. I’ve been experimenting with different running shoe brands and I currently rotate amongst 4 pairs of shoes: the Asics, plus Nikes, Brooks, and Mizunos. I have also been drooling over some Sauconys recently so it may become a rotation of 5 soon. 😀

What new shoes do you have in the mail!?!

    • kilax says:

Are you just experimenting to see which shoes are the best for you? Or do you use different ones for different types of run? To me, it does not make sense to have a different kind of support on my foot for my runs. But I think I am missing something here.

I had to have the black ones. http://www.asicsamerica.com/footwear/running-shoes/gel-cumulus-13-t199n-womens/ I never thought I would want black running shoes, but they are too cool. I got them for cheaper than that price though (Amazon Prime, holla!).

  4. Where are the orange ones?!

That pile of shoes looks a lot like mine. With all of the comp shoes from the running store and things I got rid of more than a dozen shoes a few weeks ago (given to friends/donated) because I had too many to move! That being said, I still have something like 6 pairs of good running shoes – 1 light pair, 1 road wide pair, 1 dirty/wet road pair, 2 trails, and one backup trail. I think 1 more trail (tester) is in the mail too! Such problems to have 🙂

  6. Melie says:

I love asics. I have one retired, but sometimes used, one semi-retired and one still unused pairs of them in my closet. Though I am running in ghosts lately and I love them too.

Obviously, it is very normal to have unopened pairs of asics in your closet. Already, I do it and you do it, so we are many. If we were in psychology we could actually publish a paper with all that valid and unquestionable data.

    • kilax says:

Ha! I think we should publish a paper. I bet I can find a few more people who do the same thing 😉

    1) Yes, I keep a spreadsheet of my runs, notes, shoes worn, etc and keep track of the miles on every pair of shoes.

    2) I currently have 9 pairs of shoes that I rotate through. I do most of my mileage in 5 pair with the others just getting occasional use.

Brands: Merrell, New Balance, Inov-8, Brooks

I’m an Asics girl too! They are the only running shoes I have. I am sad right now because my favorite Grey and Lilac colored ones have gotten to the point where I can’t run on them anymore, I can only use them for walking or working out at the gym 🙁

Sorry I startled you with my blog title – didn’t even think of that! I guess I was so wrapped up in letting go of that toaster… It’s in a garbage bag down in the basement and I keep thinking about it – am I lame or what???

    • kilax says:

Not lame at all! I think you should deconstruct it and make it in to wall art or something 🙂

  9. I have unopened shoes in my closet sometimes, if there’s a good sale going on. I only wear one pair to run and have one or two pairs for walking and yardwork (worn out running shoes).

  10. J says:

I have like three pairs of shoes I rotate through right now. One is really old, one is my go to pair, and another is for easy short runs. I used to stock up on the Brooks Ghost 3s shoes because they were stopping production and making the Ghost 4s, now I am down to my last pair of Ghosts so I need to find a new pair of shoes 🙁

And I track all my mileage. I can usually get about 500 miles out of shoe before I start to feel bad. I wish I could get more. Seems like they just don’t build shoes to last long!

  11. abbi says:

I have 4 pairs in rotation right now, plus another pair for trails. For the first time ever, I’m trying to track mileage. I never have before because I have so many in rotation all the time and I have no idea how many miles I’m getting. One pair is really old but they still feel good and that’s generally what I go on.

  12. shelley says:

I have about 4 pairs on the go. Right now I just bought a new pair of brooks, i’m liking them!

  13. Kandi says:

I don’t keep track of the mileage on my shoes.
I don’t buy the same pair of shoes everytime I get new ones. I just usually stick to either new balance or adidas because I know they don’t hurt my feet/legs. I don’t want to count how many pairs of old running shoes I have right now. I have two pairs that I currently run in – one pair I leave at work and the other for home. I have at least 4 pairs of old shoes lying around for hiking/walking the dog/anything else.

  14. gina says:

I dislike your new shoe day. Where is my shoe twin?!

  15. Kelly says:

I’m also an asics girl. I heart those things and have three pairs now in rotation.

  16. martymankins says:

For as much as you run, I think that amount of Asics are normal. I have 2 pairs of Asics now… an older pair that are on their last leg that I use for walking around during the day and my gym Asics that are less than 6 months old and are still in great shape and nicely broken in.

  17. Erin says:

I currently have two pairs of Asics and one (maybe two) pairs of old Brooks. I run in one pair of the Asics and the other I use for gym stuff. But, actually, now that I have my new Merrel barefoot ones that’s what I’m using to strength train.

If you want to donate your shoes to a worthy cause, let me know. You probably don’t need all of those to bum around in and the high school Maribeth works at can always use shoes for their track and cross country teams 🙂

  18. Ren says:

Doh! I recently switched apps from iSmoothRun to Runmeter and the former tracked shoe mileage. Now I’ll have to come up with an alternative solution. Or, you know, not bother.

  19. Losing Lindy says:

wow that is a lot of shoes. I tried leaving you some comments on your more recent entries and I am not having luck. I hope you are well.

  20. Gary says:

Wow. Only 300 miles. That’s interesting, seriously (no sarcasm intended).

But I don’t run. I guess if I did X number of miles a day, I’d keep track somehow.

    • Gary says:

So I’ve been thinking about this. Next time I get new wheels on my blades or bicycle. I think I’ll create a place to put a log. I’m just curious on the blades but it’d be SUPER handy if I found a pattern on the bike tires (changing flats while out is a drag).

(And today my above comment, looks sarcastic to me (the disclaimer makes it look more so), it was not the intent 🙂

      • kilax says:

Don’t worry! I did not think you were being sarcastic.

You should find a way to track that stuff. It’s fun!
